The Kipper family - "Henry", the old man, and "Sid", supposedly his son, were a brilliant comedy act, allegedly a Norfolk version of the traditional Copper family. Sid Kipper is still around as a solo act, capable of reducing a room full of folkies to gasping wrecks, but sadly the guy who played Old Henry passed away last year.

They had to kill him off because Sid was sick of people asking when he was coming back!!

I've slept in the same bed as Sid Kipper!

(Mind you, so's Martin Carthy......)

There are several albums, a folk opera and a song book or two available as well.....

Notes from Buttons and Bows compilation album re a Kipper Family recording: 'A muddley of tunes from the Truch dance tradition.It is unusual to find the Kipper Family in unstrumental mood,and it is not certain when this rare recording was made.Henry Kipper suggests just before closing time'.

Sid killed Old Henry off, appartantly when he first went solo he said he had gone to an Old Folies Home. Dick Nudds (who was Henry's alter ego) is though now living as a woman (name unknown)in a strange twist of fate. Oh what a tangled life we lead.

I think the Kipper copyrights are mostly Dambuster Music, and this may be connected to Dave Bulmer.

Its good to see the Kipper tradition spreading and being kept alive----How do you keep a kipper alive?

I still think that the act was at its best when Henry was around.

In the bio link above, there's mention that the late Henry Kipper played the Tremelodeon.

Anyone have more info on this instrument?

It looked like a normal melodeon but it must have had something like a wee fan added inside that gave it the tremolo as the air passed through. It gave it a real vibrato effect.

Anyway, I understood that Henry gave up because he couldn't handle the booze.
He would walk on the stage and the audience would go boooo - he couldn't handle that and I couldn't either.

I `ad that Sid Kipper in my cab once. `e `adn`t `ad time to take `is make up off and he still looked like a very convincing pensioner but a bit out of puff from running.
I said, "What`s up Sid? You look like you just done a `alf marathon"
`e said, "Too true Jim. I`ve just come away from that Traditions Club"
I said, "`owdit go then? Alright?"
`e said, "The audience was with us all the way but we shook `em off at the station!!"
