I know that he has been unwell and they have cut back on tour dates, but I hadn't heard this..

I was privileged to session on one of their albums once. I've sent an e-mail to Nick, the mandolin player, asking for details. - IanB

Their website confirms that he is unable to play. See www.mccalmans.co.uk

Ian Boughton kindly alerted me to this thread. Derek is indeed gravely ill with lung cancer, though comfortable at the moment, and was able to attend our recent gig at The Queens Hall. The band will continue to perform, with Stephen Quigg (an old mate and a great singer) now in the band. The website is fully up to date. Naturally some gigs had to be cancelled as a result of the illness, and Stephen's solo commitments, but all gigs on the site are confirmed. I'll pass on the good wishes to Derek when I see him tomorrow. Thanks all, Nick Keir

The band I am with supported them last year at Port William Festival in south west Scotland. We had a great night with them all till the wee hours of the morning. This is very sad news to me.

I don't know if it's my age but I am finding too many of my friends going down this way at the moment.

Best wishes Derek.

I know that I speak not only for myself, but for everyone at Campsie Folk Club, when I say that our thoughts are with him.

Cheers

Steven

Stunned to hear this. They are such a good band, and his voice such an important part of it. I mentioned on a thread elsewhere that having heard his Star o' the Bar on the Keepers album, it was so good that I was looking for a chord accompaniment to cover the short comings of my own voice.

So sorry to hear the sad news. Star o'the Bar is a classic - a real favourite of mine.

If Nick picks this up, please pass on best wishes.

Yes, I heard some weeks ago. There are many good songs I associate with Derek, as well as a few hilarious late-night events, like when he tried to sing me a particular song at two in the morning in the middle of a very much asleep small-town street! He must be one of the nicest and most cheerful people I've ever met, and I hope this disposition now helps him and his young wife to bear their lot.

Shocked and sad. Last time I was in direct contact with Derek was at Girvan folk festival, some years back, when I had a beer with him in a local pub. It helps to lift the gloom a wee bit to learn that an old pal, Stephen Quigg, is stepping into the gap.Too many good folkies are slipping past. I know Maw Burns in Irvine will be feeling down at this news too---she was "Mother Hen " to the lads every time they were in the district. Peace, Derek---and I hope the age of miracles is not past.. Boab
