The name of it? And is it still "in print", so to speak? Where is it available, if at all? Tell, tell!!!

DaveO ,
I think they are talkin about "the Ballad of Ramblin' Jack". A documentary about Jack Elliott by his daughter, released last year. Great movie.

Yes - That is the movie. Unsure where to find it. Try the local video stores - an online search? Well worth whatever it takes. Regards - Steve

Annamil kindly put several copies of this in the auction. It is available TO video stories, tho' they may not have ordered it. I have alas not seen my copy yet, as my TV is on the blink. (after paying $70 to get it fixed.)

The film is a truly moving documentary. If you are not an Elliot fan it matters not since his daughter has created a film that can stand on its own as a great piece of work. If you are a fan you can see him "warts" and all.

His daughter's object in this was, as she said, to come to terms with her relationship with her father.

One of the most moving scenes ( I feel) is when she asks her mother how Jack was as a father. The silence is deafening.

I think it can still be seen in a few art theaters, and I hope that someday a PBS Great Master's Show would carry it.

Dear Catters,

The motion picture Ballad of Ramblin' Jack was a *great* documentary. It furnished wonderful insights into the 1950's and 60's New York folk scene and Jack Elliott's role. Hey, he coulda been a surgeon, but he chose to make folk music for all of us.

My only quibble with the film is that none of the music in this documentary can touch any of the tracks recorded by Ramblin' Jack in 1960 and 1961, recently released on a CD called Hard Travelin' on the Fantasy label. Jack's guitar technique, as reflected in the numbers recorded for the film, is well below the performance abilities that he had demonstrated years earlier. If you have only seen the documentary and have never heard any of these early tracks, then you don't know Ramblin' Jack's art. I first heard these tunes on vinyl in 1962 and they still blow me away. This, IMHO, is the ultimate in folk music.

This documentary (brilliant!) was recently shown in the UK on "The arts Channel" one of the better subscription only Sky choices.

Now that I know what you're talking about, I can tell you that The Ballad of Ramblin' Jack is available at Elderly Music (Elderly.com).

Actually the name of the store is Elderly Instruments, not Elderly Music. They're in Lansing, Michigan.
