With reference to Chord challenge threat,, why if people think that you hve made an outrageous request, do they have to tell you instead of just ignoring the request. I thought that was the wonder of the internet, that if you want to play you can and if you don't you don't have to.

This is a serious forum Kara. If you don't believe me check out the "erection" thread. I simply don't think the people who saw yours, could believe you actually NEEDED the chords to those awful songs. Just kidding!

I suppose the reaction has some notion of 'education' in it..."How will they know if I don't tell 'em?"...due to human nature, it doesn't always help, but the impulse to 'correct' also seems to be human nature.

...so, I went and read the offending thread...

'chords' are an ongoing item of contention here...some think that you oughta just figger 'em out...and some think that they are not set in stone anyway, so why bother...and SOME think that those who ask about chords are just being lazy..(whether it's true or not... and that there ARE better places to look)...and some think requests ought to be confined more to folk music...so, *shrug*....you may get an answer, you may get some chords, but you are posting in a public forum with many opinions.

So may be we can keep the hissy-fits( a term I have just learnt and like a lot) to the hissy fit thread and the chords to the chord thread

Hi Kara--

After checking out the "Chord challenge" thread, my impression is that any hissy-fit you might perceive on any of the posters' parts was probably caused by their not receiving a simple thank you for their efforts on your behalf! (And incidentally, telling you about Google was an excellent tip on how to find things in the future; at least I certainly appreciated it as I wasn't aware of that particular search engine. Love the education I get on the 'Cat!)

Even on the internet, good manners still help people communicate. :>)

Respectfully,
Lin

The wonder of the internet, is that you are communicating directly with strangers who could someday be friends.

I would gently point out that we aren't search robots waiting around to prove how easily we can find songs.

Everytime someone responds, it means they may have spent some time searching for a response to the question.

The next question is, will they feel like responding to another question from the same source?

Glad you found the Mudcat, hope you stick around.

:)

Kara:

The wonder of the internet is nothing compared to the mileage one can get investing a small amount of extra effort in friendly remarks, considerate thoughts expressed, etc. It makes everything happen much smoother! Kinda like lub oil!

Hi, Kara,

I've found that the way the question is phrased will influence the kind of answer one gets. Most people don't like being "challenged" for someone else's amusement. We have a really nice group of people here. Why not hang around for awhile & (quietly) see we are? Maybe you'll have something to contribute, instead of just asking for help. Polite, sincere requests are usually met well. Yup, a thank you doesn't hurt, either. Young, are you?

best,

bbc

Kara, I think the original request, and your reply might have been phrased better.

The request itself isn't outrageous, I don't think, but then I don't play guitar.

As I understand it, there are no "special chords" for any song, but some people might like it better one way than another. There are some who feel that by specifying such chords, it inhibits someone from finding something better. Music is more fun with the experimenting, and trying different ways to do something.

I suspect that a thicker skin, and more graciousness on the question and reply after a response has been generated would be very pleasant to all.

We do try to help when we can. Next time, just post it as a request rather than a challenge. Thanks for thinking of us.

Although my friend is pretty good on the guitar and can work out a lot of things, he is completly usless when it comes to the computer, so I will go to google and see what I can come up with. But I can't believe that this has beaten you bunch.

This message was at 2:11PM, 'Cat time.

There was an answer 10 or 20 minutes before that giving links to the chords for three of the songs.

It infuriates people when people post requests, and don't even read the reply when it is given. That's probably what ticked most of the people.

When searching Mudcat (and perhaps this is true elsewhere; I don't know), I find that if I use the "Back" button to return from a thread to the Forum, I often see the same list of threads as I did the previous time I'd viewed the Forum, instead of the up-to-the-minute list. Kara, if this is the reason you missed the answers to your questions (as George Seto described above), you can avoid this problem by clicking on the "refresh" button on the Forum page.

I've also found that if I leave a thread open for a while, postings that occurred after I'd opened the thread will not appear on it. The only way I've found to "refresh" a thread you're viewing without returning to the Forum first is to add the thread to your "Favorites" list (in Internet Explorer) and click on the thread name there. Then you'll be able to see the most recent postings to the thread.

Hmmm....you draw more with honey than vinegar. You'll find all to be a most accomodating bunch, but it helps to talk and play nice. Not a bad idea to do your own search on google first. Lots of times i can find things immediately that way.

Yes I missed the answer to the request, I think that the link was not working when the answer first was posted and what became the answer when Mr Clone had fixed it was infact just a list of the songs I'd asked for when I looked at it. I think people do like to be challenged which is why the the song challenges are always so well responded to.I have in the past had a go at the song challenge myself. I agree that there are not a set set of chords to a song and was suprised to only get one set of responses, even though the songs are not really folk or blues songs. I did do a google search but it was not very sucsesfull, I just got a hugh list of sites with Diamonds for sale and the such like and not a chord in sight..

well thank you for all your healthy advise

Kara

I never could work out the chords, so I wrote a program to do it! May not be perfect, but it is better than I could manage without.
