Subject: The Virtual Session. From: The Shambles Date: 27 May 01 - 07:06 AM I am stick here with the flu, when I should be in a non-stop session at the Old Road Tavern at Chippenham Festival
I have to content myself with this The Virtual Session at the BBC's new folk website.
Not quite the same but at least I am not giving the flu to anybody. The tunes are played quite slowly and the dots are there too. A very good way to learn the tunes. What do you think? |
Subject: RE: The Virtual Session. From: Jon Freeman Date: 27 May 01 - 07:59 AM I like it Shambles. The pace for learning (and I think in my case, practising) seems about right - slowish without being too slow. I hope they record some more tunes to add to the collection. Sorry about the flu - hope you recover quickly. Jon |

Subject: RE: The Virtual Session. From: Sorcha Date: 27 May 01 - 11:07 AM That is COOL! Thanks, Shambles. Sorry about the flu. Get well soon. |
Subject: RE: The Virtual Session. From: nutty Date: 27 May 01 - 11:36 AM Shambles ..... If you feel like doing something different .....this is also a useful site CLICK HERE |
Subject: RE: The Virtual Session. From: Noreen Date: 27 May 01 - 11:58 AM Thanks, Shambles! This is just what I need. Maybe a few more English/Scottish tune sets as well would be of use, but I like the sets on there so far. Just going to try to "Beat the barman in the Folk and Acoustic Pub Quiz"... Noreen |
Subject: RE: The Virtual Session. From: Morticia Date: 27 May 01 - 12:12 PM great site, thanks Rog. Hope your flu is better soon. |
Subject: RE: The Virtual Session. From: Helen Date: 27 May 01 - 07:02 PM shambles, Hope you're not playing tin whistle too - that green stuff sure does ruin the melody (snicker!) Having just recovered from flu myself you have my deepest sympathy. Take echinacea, vitamin C & garlic and lots of rest.
Love |
Subject: RE: The Virtual Session. From: The Shambles Date: 27 May 01 - 07:18 PM Thanks for the sites, medical advice and kind words.
My wife has been plying me we this echinacea stuff and Vitimum C tablets for the last few months.
In the last three weeks I have had gastric flu, recovered from that and now have a different type of flu, with a cough and bad chest.
I used to be quite healthy before all that stuff *Smiles* I suppose one could argue that without taking it, I would have been much worse?

Subject: RE: The Virtual Session. From: GUEST,t0asti Date: 27 May 01 - 08:45 PM Sounds like the real thing to me ...wondeful. Now if I could just get a pint of L&B ..hmmmmm Jon might have some ideas on that one. Also mega Thanks for the link :) |
Subject: RE: The Virtual Session. From: Roger in Sheffield Date: 28 May 01 - 03:08 PM Shambles are you spreading cyber germs. I was fine yesterday and now I ache all over and want to sleep constantly - and I should be in the pub session right now but instead I have all the symptoms of a hangover without having had a drink. So instead I will annoy the neighbours with a virtual session of Harvest Home take 23, 24, 25... Hope you are feeling better |
Subject: RE: The Virtual Session. From: GUEST,Willa Date: 28 May 01 - 03:45 PM Shambles; hope you get well soon. it seems that fhe flu is on the rampage again; several of my friends are suffering. I'm impressed with the BBC site, and particularly like the virtual session. As a beginner, it's very frustrating when you're longing to join in, but can't keep up the pace. The slightly slower pace helps to build up confidence. |
Subject: RE: The Virtual Session. From: Llanfair Date: 28 May 01 - 04:01 PM Sorry to hear about the 'flu, Shambles, and thanks a lot for the link. I can now practice the whistle in the privacy of my own home! Recovery takes a while (from the flu, not my whistle playing) and you just have to go with the flow! Cheers, Bron. |
Subject: RE: The Virtual Session. From: Liz the Squeak Date: 28 May 01 - 06:03 PM I positive that Manitas will have had a drink for you (and probably half the population of London) in Chippenham, where he has been all weekend. I've been looking after the bratling so I know why I ache all over! Get well soon. LTS |
Subject: RE: The Virtual Session. From: Manitas Date: 29 May 01 - 05:35 PM I didn't get much time in at the Old Road. Friday night, half and hour Monday pm and Monday night where I had to leave as I was falling asleep while playing. It was just as crowded as ever and as far as I know just as non-stop. |
Subject: RE: The Virtual Session. From: John J at home Date: 29 May 01 - 06:07 PM A bit of a bugger having the 'flu, but what a wonderful idea for learning tunes! Thanks for the link, I've added it to my favourites. Hope you're feeling better soon. |
Subject: RE: The Virtual Session. From: Steve Parkes Date: 30 May 01 - 09:50 AM I'm typing at arm's lenght, as I have a sore throat. Hold your breath while you read ... The sessions look good, but you need RealPlayer 8, a snip at $28.95. Bugger that! I like my BBC free, as God intended, As it is, I can get the first tune (with a lot of right-clicking and other nonsense) but not the rest of the set. I'll have to stick with d-i-y Noteworthy Composer, or (gasp!) other musicians! Steve |
Subject: RE: The Virtual Session. From: Noreen Date: 30 May 01 - 11:18 AM No, Steve- there is a free version of Real Player, which is mentioned on the page where they try to sell you the whistles-and-bells version, but it's in very small print- they obviously don't want you to see it! I don't like paying either when the free alternative works just as well for what I want. If you can't find it I'll see if I can search it out for you. Noreen |
Subject: RE: The Virtual Session. From: GUEST,Roger the skiffler Date: 30 May 01 - 11:22 AM Steve couldn't read the small print, Noreen, he's typing at arm's length! *BG* RtS |
Subject: RE: The Virtual Session. From: Noreen Date: 30 May 01 - 11:35 AM Oh yes- silly me...! And I didn't read his post carefully enough because I was holding my breath... Get well soon, Steve and Shambles. Noreen |
Subject: RE: The Virtual Session. From: Steve Parkes Date: 30 May 01 - 12:24 PM ==Wheeeeeze Thanks Noreen--I'll go and have another look ==Gaaaaasp== |
Subject: RE: The Virtual Session. From: The Shambles Date: 30 May 01 - 12:44 PM I thought it a good idea to introduce folk to the Virtual Session. Have I passed on the Vitual Flu too? |
Subject: RE: The Virtual Session. From: harpmolly Date: 30 May 01 - 12:56 PM You might also check out Dougie Maclean's website--he has his Dunkeld pub, the Taybank, "online" and you can listen to the virtual session, get a virtual pint etc. It's nifty. Then again, I'm impartial because I adore Dougie. But it's cool anyway. :D www.dougiemaclean.com M |
Subject: RE: The Virtual Session. From: GUEST,Scabby Doug (computer ate cookie) Date: 31 May 01 - 04:24 AM I was at the Taybank last Sunday. Dougie sat in on the sesh. Very nice guy, good craic. Recommended. Cheers Scabby Doug |
