I am stick here with the flu, when I should be in a non-stop session at the Old Road Tavern at Chippenham Festival

I have to content myself with this The Virtual Session at the BBC's new folk website.

Not quite the same but at least I am not giving the flu to anybody.

The tunes are played quite slowly and the dots are there too. A very good way to learn the tunes. What do you think?

I like it Shambles. The pace for learning (and I think in my case, practising) seems about right - slowish without being too slow. I hope they record some more tunes to add to the collection.

Thanks, Shambles! This is just what I need. Maybe a few more English/Scottish tune sets as well would be of use, but I like the sets on there so far.

Hope you're not playing tin whistle too - that green stuff sure does ruin the melody (snicker!)

Having just recovered from flu myself you have my deepest sympathy. Take echinacea, vitamin C & garlic and lots of rest.

Thanks for the sites, medical advice and kind words.

My wife has been plying me we this echinacea stuff and Vitimum C tablets for the last few months.

In the last three weeks I have had gastric flu, recovered from that and now have a different type of flu, with a cough and bad chest.

I used to be quite healthy before all that stuff *Smiles*

I suppose one could argue that without taking it, I would have been much worse?

Shambles are you spreading cyber germs. I was fine yesterday and now I ache all over and want to sleep constantly - and I should be in the pub session right now but instead I have all the symptoms of a hangover without having had a drink. So instead I will annoy the neighbours with a virtual session of Harvest Home take 23, 24, 25...

Shambles; hope you get well soon. it seems that fhe flu is on the rampage again; several of my friends are suffering. I'm impressed with the BBC site, and particularly like the virtual session. As a beginner, it's very frustrating when you're longing to join in, but can't keep up the pace. The slightly slower pace helps to build up confidence.

Sorry to hear about the 'flu, Shambles, and thanks a lot for the link. I can now practice the whistle in the privacy of my own home!
Recovery takes a while (from the flu, not my whistle playing) and you just have to go with the flow!

I didn't get much time in at the Old Road. Friday night, half and hour Monday pm and Monday night where I had to leave as I was falling asleep while playing. It was just as crowded as ever and as far as I know just as non-stop.

The sessions look good, but you need RealPlayer 8, a snip at $28.95. Bugger that! I like my BBC free, as God intended, As it is, I can get the first tune (with a lot of right-clicking and other nonsense) but not the rest of the set. I'll have to stick with d-i-y Noteworthy Composer, or (gasp!) other musicians!

No, Steve- there is a free version of Real Player, which is mentioned on the page where they try to sell you the whistles-and-bells version, but it's in very small print- they obviously don't want you to see it! I don't like paying either when the free alternative works just as well for what I want. If you can't find it I'll see if I can search it out for you.

You might also check out Dougie Maclean's website--he has his Dunkeld pub, the Taybank, "online" and you can listen to the virtual session, get a virtual pint etc. It's nifty. Then again, I'm impartial because I adore Dougie. But it's cool anyway. :D
