Subject: Hitler's genitals
From: Earl

I recently saw a documentary on the death of Hitler. The Russian doctor who performed the autopsy said they discovered "quite accidentally" that Hitler had only one testicle. That brought to mind this gem from the "Naughty Kids Greatest Hits" thread.

Hitler, only had one big ball
Stalin had two but very small
Himmler was something sim'lar
And poor old Goebbels had no balls at all.

I remember this song but I had no idea that there was any truth to it. Was this common knowledge, or coincidence, or a rumor that later proved true, or what?

And a seperate question: the tune was Colonel Bogey's March. Who was Colonel Bogey?

When I was in grade school, I had to do a project on women in WW2. I did some research on female spies--I can no longer remember my sources, unfortunately. I learned about one female British spy who got very close to Hitler in order to find something about him that might be useful as propaganda against him. During one of her 'get close to Hitler' missions, she found that he only had one testicle. She dutifully brought the intelligence back to her superiors. They, then, must have employed their best folk song writers--perhaps their own children--to come up with a song to make fun of Hitler and cheer up their demoralized citizens. Hence, the famous "Hitler has only got one ball" song.

Lord knows how much of this was true. All I know is that my teacher wasn't particularly impressed with my report.

Moira,

How sad it is that folklore is so unappreciated in schools. That report deserved an A plus in my opinion.

Is there anyone out there who can verify that this song was actually sung during World War II? I find the reference to Stalin somewhat puzzling since he was allied with the British and Americans who would have been singing the song in the first place. That makes me think it didn't become current until after the war. Or was there another name there before Stalin?

In another thread it's posted as "Goering had two but very small". I think that's how I heard it but it was long after the war and the names didn't mean much to me then.

Yeah, I've heard several two-syllable Nazi names (for the mon wi' wee ones), but never Stalin before.

I wouldn't get carried away with the reference to Stalin, I suspect that was a very local variant born from the ignorance of some very young schoolboys in the mid 50s. We sang it in blissful ignorance of its political inaccuracy. That's the folk process.

Cheers,
Alan

In Berwickshire (mid/late 50s) we sang Rommel in line two. Shame, really. Rommel had balls enough to be part of the plot to kill Hitler.

There is a supposedly-authentic report of the British army entering Tripoli during WWII being reviewed by Winston Churchill. The English units were singing "Hitler.. Rommell... Himmler.... Goebels". This brought a smile to Winston's mouth. Not to be outdone, the Scottish Highland Division marched through, singing, "The Ball of Kirriemuir". At this, Churchill broke into a broad grin. The Movietone News film had to be scrapped.

I had heard this song to the tune they whistled in the movie, Bridge Over the River Kwai. Would that be Bogey's March? We might have to adjust the Mussolini lyric to get it to scan.

Right, the tune from the movie Bridge on the River Kwai is "Colonel Bogey's March". I wish I knew who Col. B. was. The line about Mussolini is from this parody . (Now let's see whether I did that right.)

Concerning "Colonel Bogey's March", I read a review of "Bridge on the River Kwai" that said the song actually went back to World War I.

Since I didn't get Jerry F's post completely, I don't know what he sang the Mussolini lyric to. We used to sing it to "Whistle While You Work"

Whistle while you work
Hitler is a jerk
Mussolini bit...

Anyone have further verses to this...masterpiece?

A page on the topic here.

Not wholly conclusive, it must be said, but I certainly don't believe the story of the English lady spy! Various propaganda stories were circulated about him. He's even alleged to have had a Jewish g/father, though I think that one has been disproven.

If you can believe that what you see in TV documentaries is truly factual then my understanding is:

- Hitler had one testicle, whether he was born that way I can't recall
- The Brits didn't know this
- In an attempt to further demonise Hitler they invented a story that he had less than the average arsenal

Whether the British propaganda machine originally wrote the song, I don't know.

In modern times George Bush Snr. would always pronounce the Iraqi leader's name as 'SAY-DM' in order to deliberately create an alliteration to 'SATAN' - but we already knew that, didn't we.

The propaganda/PR machine is still alive and well today. It'll be interesting to find out in future years what the actual 'truth' is.

Regards, John

I heard it a few times (no idea where, but I think on more than one occasion) with Goering's name in the second line, unless the ol' memory is shaky again.

Definitely not Stalin though.... Definitely wasn't Rommel, either. If it were I would have been indignant, not amused, he's always seemed to me to be someone worthy of respect.

So hard to know how these things really went. The story I heard was that as they passed the reviewing stand the band only played the Ball of Kirriemuir and it was still enough to cause some outrage amongst the staider folks.

Having heard this at fifteenth hand I make no claims for its veracity.

Considering how little we know about a song made only 50 to 60 years ago is it any wonder why we know little or nothing about the truly old songs we love? And why those songs engender so many learned arguments.

As a child in the Fifties, the song was still being sung in grade school halls in the US. It didn't mention Stalin. The second line was "Goebbels has two, but rather small", and the last line was "And poor old Goering has no balls at allllll".

Sure it wasn't the other way round, Amos? We Brits took great delight in rhyming Go-balls (Goebbels) with "no balls"

In neutral Ireland, the second line refers to Churchill. We were really neutral on the side of the good guys, but we always made an exception for him.
