On a knitting list I belong to, we were today bemoaning that age-old frustration of the Missing Sock - you know, the one that you're sure went into the wash, but you haven't seen it since.

A lady told me that when her washing machine broke down, the repairman found no less than seven socks which had somehow inched their way underneath the washtub and wound their way around the spindle, causing the machine to croak.

Now we know.

Propoganda put about by subversive PR agents of the SOCK DRAGON , who, as everyone knows, resides in washing machines and only ever eats one sock at a time

I've heard it was due to wormholes in space, which take socks to THE PLACE (which is where all our old ball-point pens go, as where as the place files go to when you delete them).

I did hear one time that socks were the larval form of wire coat hangers.

I know this is true, because I read it on the internet somewhere. The lost socks mate with lost guitar picks and have coat hangers for babies.

I'd like to know if anyone has a trans-dimensional portal in their cars. I put CDs and other things in there and when I look for them, they're gone. They usually re-appear at some later time when I've stopped looking. Aw, that sounds a little crazy. Maybe some objects just know how to hide...

Bert, I heard that too today. It could explain why I have an excess of hangers... oh wait... that could also be because I never hang anything up...

Bert, maybe that makes more sense than the theory I heard. So what happens to the guitar picks? (My glasses are always trying to get away, but they're usually too slow.)

I'd like to know that too. Years ago I bought several hot pink Fender medium guitar picks which promptly disappeared. Have been looking for more and can't seem to find any. :(

The guitar picks get together with the remote, down the back of the couch, where they create ultrasonic waves which startle the cat.

Kim, just for the heck of it, check the sofa cushions and see if the picks are there...I'm dying to know.

Bert, I wonder if the couch creepers make the cat nuts, or whether the cat frightens them. Do cats eat guitar picks?

I lose CD's like crazy. Usually I am left holding the box, but I even lost one, BOX AND ALL, the other day.

Maybe they'll show up in the washer.

Socks end up in my friend Barbara's apartment in Knoxville. Seriously, she has about 40 socks with no mates and no explanation.

I don't know where ballpoint pens go when I'm visiting her. Can never find one.

Maybe some cosmic force trades 'em with socks?

It's one Sandy Denny tape that goes missing here, then shows up weeks or months later in the obvious place that I've already checked a hundred times...

Every time it goes missing I promise myself that I'll make a backup copy when it turns up again... but still haven't... maybe I'll do it now... it's just over there, I think...

I'm beginning to accumulate guitar picks. At the little store down the street, where I go 2 or 3 times a day, for the morning paper, my lunch, deli stuff for supper when neither of us wants to cook, etc., they got so used to finding guitar picks of mine on the floor in front of the counter, from when I'd reach into my pocket for change and one would fall out, that they now give me all the guitar picks they find. Most, but not all, were originally mine.

Peter.

Two marriages totalling 25 years and I reckon I ended up with about 500 odd socks. The last 5 years on my own and not one lost sock! They are actually starting to wear out and that's never happened to me before. I think it is a female conspiracy. By continually losing our socks it gives them an easy and cheap out when it comes to our birthdays & xmas.

I think that most of the ballpoint pens end up with me; I don't recall buying one in 30 years, but seem to have an inexhaustible supply of the blasted things, at least half of which don't work.  Still, there's evidently more where they came from.  I'd rather have the missing socks, though, so that I could go out with matching ones a bit more often.

No no! The washer RUNS on socks! and only new ones and NEVER pairs. I know this because I pin my socks together and never lose a whole pair, and the electrical bill went up. (Actually we all pin our socks together. I've been told to get a life, but actually I have one because I'm not always looking for socks. And I always have a safety pin if one is needed.) BUT, my longies are disappearing...

Don't care about the TV remote, don't have the tv hooked up to the airwaves. And cats often receive messages subether. And send them...

This thread requires me to tell another Walt Robertson story. I am totally color blind, meaning that I don't see colors. This has never been a problem in my life, until I come in contact with other humans, which does happen sometimes! During my single years, and just when Walt had retired from the University of Hawaii and returned to the Northwest,we spent much time together. I called him once and invited him over for the weekend. I told him that I had an agenda, but it would be a surprise. After a couple of days of wine, women and song, that Sunday afternoon I dumped out three boxes of my soxes, and asked him to match the colors. After a couple of hours, I had several wearable (apparently) pairs of socks, and two boxes of garbage. He tried to give me a ration of garbage, but he did admitt that his sock drawers could use the same assistance!Today, I have learned to buy socks in two colors ... you guess what they are! I REALLY solved the problem by marrying bride Judy ... she's an artist!

I think that, as well as the sock dragon, every house has a boggart - a Yorkshire term for a mischievous spirit who steals and hides things for the hell of it - that's why they sometimes reappear exactly where you have already looked ten times. We have one that is partial to borrowing my son's Tamagochi - unfortunately it usually turns up again after a while. Kit Kat

I buy whatever colour I want - red or green - and, when I feel like mismatching my wardrobe and I'm "complimented" on the colour match, just sigh and say, "Oops... tea first, then get dressed." or "Damn, I GOTTA pay that power bill." It's a good conversation piece and it gives you an extra day or two to get around to the laundry. Of course, around Xmas, I always wear one red, one green. Yes, I too am partially colour blind, so the red-green combo works as well as black-white, if I feel up to the extra effort in the AM.

Oh yeah, I wear work boots -40/40, so I don't get pointed at in the mall... not for the socks, anyway.

No, you're all wrong! It's the sock troll as evidenced by this traditional verse from "When Jones Ale was New."

The next came in was a sock troll
Whose dress was exceedingly droll,
Whose dress was exceedingly droll,
When he joined in the jovial crew;
For he was attired in socks he'd snatched,
Argyle, stripped, and some was patched,
And not a single one did match.
When Jones ale was new, me boys,
When Jones Ale was new!

Kit Kat - I reckon we had a boggart at home when I were a lad. If one of us had been searching for ages for something we'd lost, my dad would say "It'll find you when its good and ready" - and very often it did!

Jeri, no guitar picks in the couch cushions, but stray knitting needles appear there once in awhile.

I think we have a boggart except it doesn't put things back where they were. One day I came home to find my bathroom radio smack dab in the bedroom doorway. I left it in the bathroom that morning---- how it migrated, I don't know.

My mother (who's not a particularly religious woman) swears that if you say "Jesus was lost, Jesus was found" three times in succession then the missing object will re-appear. I've tried it a few times and it works, and I'm an atheist. Hmmmmmmm.

Socks, banjo picks, and ball-point pens at our house hide in out-of-the way places, and then metamorphose, according to the season, into Easter grass, tinfoil Christmas-tree icicles, and intoLegos which always lie in well-beaten pathways where barefooted ole Dad will "find" them in the midnight stroll to worship the porcelain god.

I would like to oppose any theory about socks mating with guitar picks or anything else in the after life. Sock are monogamous. It is a scientific fact. Just look at the socks left behind. No matter how many years you have them lying aruond in your closet, they will never mate again.

So now we need another theory about the origin of coathangers...

I must beg to differ with you all as it IS the dryer who snatches the socks away. Usualy when it is mad. The AWWWFUL dryer buzzer hollers anoyingly at you and snatches a sock away out of spite. As for guitar picks does anyone use a square pick which would reder it incapable of rollling away. Just a therory

Just a thought BUT......

Why not throw all the odd socks into the washing basket. They may get washed a few times but wherever the go they get more chance to go. AND they can meet up and match, wherever they are.

You never know they may suddenly turn up as a pair. Er... at probability of .01
