Skarpi,

http://fzucca.interfree.it/songs/gestsong.html

This is the best John Denver web site I have found, there are very dependable chords and lyrics to everything he did it seems.

Regards

Don

I used to really like John Denver, 'way back in the early '70s. But then he sorta hmmm, I dunno, went nuts, or got flaky, or something. Anyway, the late '70s and early '80s didn't seem like the same level of excellence as his earlier stuff.

When I heard about his death, I was surprised. I hadn't heard much from him in fifteen years, or more. So I'm watching TV one night, and they're interviewing Annie. And they ask her what her favorite JD song was. After thinking a bit, she says "Perhaps Love."

I found the site, and looked up the lyric. Nice lyric. Perhpas I might like the song.

Halló Skarpi, The lyrics and chords linked to by Don appear to be correct...except (according to my sheetmusic)...in the first verse where it has an Em7 chord for storm and warm, the sheetmusic has an Em chord. (corresponding points in other verses)

Placido Domingo is the good-looking Spaniard of The Three Tenors. His voice is not as bright as Pavarotti's, but is more mellow and darker. He recorded this song along with John Denver, and IMO his voice was vastly superior to John's, but I guess John's name sold the song.

All the best,
Mary

That link that Don Meixner posted above (over a year ago) now brings up a blank page for me. Which goes to show that, if you think a song is appropriate for Mudcat, it's better to copy and paste the lyrics rather than post a link to another site. Other sites come and go, but Mudcat goes on and on... so far.

On the other hand, maybe Don didn't think "Perhaps Love" was appropriate for Mudcat. I can't tell, since I don't know the song. If anyone out there likes it, and thinks it deserves to be included in a database of "folk music," please post it here for posterity.

PERHAPS LOVE
by John Denver

Perhaps love is like a resting place,
a shelter from the storm
It exists to give you comfort,
it is there to keep you warm.
And in those times of trouble
when you are most alone
The memory of love will bring you home.

Perhaps love is like a window,
perhaps an open door
It invites you to come closer,
it wants to show you more.
And even if you lose yourself
and don't know what to do
The memory of love will see you through.

Love to some is like a cloud,
to some as strong as steel
For some a way of living,
for some a way to feel.
And some say love is holding on
and some say letting go
And some say love is everything,
and some say they don't know.

Perhaps love is like the ocean,
full of conflict, full of pain
Like a fire when it's cold outside,
thunder when it rains.
If I should live forever,
and all my dreams come true
My memories of love will be of you.

This song has poignant memories for me.

A couple of years ago, my sometime singing partner brought this to our rehearsal, indicating it would be a good duet for us. I was unsure--I've always been a folkie/bluegrasser! At Dennis's urging we tried it, and it sounded great!
I was so looking forward to doing it again in performance this summer, but Dennis died suddenly several weeks ago.
I'll always remember his good cheer, and optimism when I hear this song.

Rich

Here you are, looking at the time of day a year ago when I posted this I was probably thinking of going to work and trying to be efficient. I hope I am now out of the year old dog house.

And when I hit that address from my favorite places list it pops up just fine.

Oh no! How inefficient! I keep forgetting you can't just send words and chords with out some kind of whoop jumpage. I try and straighten this jumble out.

By some very weird coincidence, guess what I suddenly had the urge to listen to this afternoon, for the first time in over a year ? John Denver Rocky Mountain Collection double CD - and, by some strange, psychic Twilight Zone phenomenon, of all the songs on it, which one did I play twice over ? "Perhaps Love". This is the version with Placido Domingo singing with him - which I think spoils the song ! I have heard another version, with just John Denver singing which I think must come from the original "Seasons of the Heart" album.

Thanks so much for these lyrics and chords. I think it is a beautiful song. There are some other lovely ones on that CD: "Shanghai Breezes", "Love Again", "Like A Sad Song", "I Want to Live", "Autograph". Going to look at that lyrics website now.

Many thanks from Mystic Psychic Jeanie !(I only wish I could pick the winning Lottery numbers as efficiently)

Jeanie

I'll have to put this on the calendar for my wife and kids to see. This is the day Dad did something right.

If you can find a copy of the video concert Denver gave for The World Wildlife Fund, watch it. Besides being a load of good music you'll see that Denver was a wizard ay stage craft and a fine musician as well. He is surrounded by some great musicians as well.

Don
