Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Let Me Call You Sweetheart From: Tiger Date: 09 Feb 01 - 07:00 AM Some of you may remember this as one of the background songs in "The Rose" with Bette Midler (great movie). Her Joplin-type character hums and sings this song on several occasions. She says she learned it from Furry Lewis. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Let Me Call You Sweetheart From: SINSULL Date: 09 Feb 01 - 04:03 PM Some of you who are older than god may remember Oliver Hardy singing it to Stan Laurel's tuba! Yes, I'm afraid I do. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Let Me Call You Sweetheart From: Joe Offer Date: 11 Feb 01 - 12:02 AM Yes, I admit that I've seen the Laurel & Hardy routine involving this song. I refuse, however, to consider this an admission of advancing age... If I were President, they'd call me "young." If I were Pope, they'd call me downright "youthful." They might be more correct to call me "youthless," but that's another matter... -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Let Me Call You Sweetheart From: SINSULL Date: 11 Feb 01 - 03:06 PM Another thought: If Joe were pope, I might even consider rejoining the Catholic Church. But then he would be too busy to play with us here...or would he? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Let Me Call You Sweetheart From: GUEST,Sally forth Date: 13 Mar 05 - 09:10 PM Yes... "The Rose"... one of the best movies of all time. Still the award for best rendition of "Let me call you Sweetheart" surely must go to Alfalfa of Little Rascal Fame... Brings a smile just to think of it. If you have never seen it, surely you must. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Let Me Call You Sweetheart From: Mooh Date: 14 Mar 05 - 06:30 AM Wasn't "Let Me Call You Sweetheart" on that movie soundtrack recording that Neil Young did, Journey Through The Past, or something? Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Let Me Call You Sweetheart From: Dave'sWife Date: 14 Mar 05 - 01:30 PM bwahahaha. Cute! I'm only 40..oops..41 as of yesterday and the last time I sang this song was on a Player Piano at an Inn in Cape May, NJ. 1989. It was a snowy day in January. We sang Galway Bay and By the Light of The Silvery Moon too. Funny thing is, amongst the Rolls, we found on roll for the theme to the 1960's BATMAN TV Show! That was startling! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Let Me Call You Sweetheart From: Snuffy Date: 14 Mar 05 - 07:36 PM These things kept going later than you think. I was amazed in the mid 80s to go to an old pub that still had a piano-roll player, to find that among the rolls were things like Ton Jones' Deliliah. Like Batman - well into the 60s. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Let Me Call You Sweetheart From: Dave'sWife Date: 14 Mar 05 - 07:59 PM Snuffy..you got that right. In that old Inn, we found rolls with Broadway tune up through the late 60's plus some odd pop tunes from the early 70's. I think right on up through the early 80's player rolls were still made. Boy that was such a nice memory to have just recalled, that afternoon at that inn! It was cold and snowing and a bunch of us couples who didn't know oneanother had come in from the cold to sip Brandy and figure out how in heck to amuse ourselves. Some of us found the rolls, figured out how to use the piano and had a blast. I particularly enjoyed singing the older songs. I was easily the youngest one there. In 1989 I was..lemme see... all of 25! My beau at the time was 37. Everyone else in the room was in their 50s and 60s. (this was before 'Dave') Years later, when I married "Dave', I foun d that quite a lot of homes in NJ have Player Pianos. It seemed as if wherever I went meeting his relatives when we were first married...there was a player piano! Maybe they just kept dragging the same one from house to house to make me feel welcome? Maybe it was a Law or something in the 60s. "You live in Jersey?? You must own a Player Piano!" I dunno. I'm from NYC where the law was.. "You're from NYC? Your mamma forces you to take Piano Lessons!" (not that they ever did me any good. I only play a bit) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Let Me Call You Sweetheart From: John in Brisbane Date: 15 Mar 05 - 09:58 AM I've mentioned this in another recent thread but if you go to http://members.shaw.ca/smythe/archive.htm you can hear MIDI re-creations of thousands of those old rolls. Don't sound too bad with a good soundcard and set of speakers - and beats the hell out of pumping. I own a pianola with a lot of rolls, but my bellows are about buggered. Regards, John |

Posted By: GUEST 13-Aug-10 - 08:10 PM Thread Name: Lyr Req: Redwing - East Anglian Song and Tune Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Redwing - East Anglian Song and Tune My Mom used to sing a song about a tin Lizzie and it was to the tune of Let Me Call you Sweetheart. The song ended something like this.... Let me call you Lizzie, I'm in love with you, let me hear you rattle like old Ford cars do, let me call you Lizzie, I still for you. |
Subject: Lyr Add: Let Me Call You Lizzie (parody) From: Genie Date: 14 Aug 10 - 01:12 AM As I remember it: Let me call you Lizzie, you're the car for me. Let me hear you rattle like a Model T. Keep your headlights burning and your taillights too. Let me call you Lizzie - I'm in debt for you. DK who wrote the parody but I understand it's been around since around the time "Let Me Call You Sweetheart" was new. |
Subject: Let Me Call You Sweetheart (parody) From: Genie Date: 14 Aug 10 - 01:14 AM This is the way I reconstructed the "in love with your automobile" parody, from hearing it when I was in college: Let me call you sweetheart, I'm in love with your automobile. Let me hear you whisper that you'll let me take the wheel. Keep the tires inflated and the gas tank filled. Let me call you sweetheart, I'm in love with your automobile. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Let Me Call You Sweetheart From: Joe Offer Date: 14 Aug 10 - 01:43 AM Thank you very much, Genie. Here is the verse from the Rise Up Singing Songbook: Let me call you Lizzie, I'm in debt for you. Let me hear you rattle as you used to do. Keep your headlights burning and your taillights too. Let me call you Lizzie - I'm in debt for you. I went to a family reunion in Detroit a couple of weeks ago. One of the high points of the trip was a family tour of the original Model T factory at 461 Piquette Avenue, Detroit. There was a prominent display of a blueprint of a Model T - with my grandfather's initials on it for two changes he made. On the tour, they treated us like royalty because our grandfather had been a neighbor, friend, and employee of Henry Ford. Kewl!!! -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Let Me Call You Sweetheart From: Genie Date: 14 Aug 10 - 04:36 AM I prefer the version I learned, Joe, because its lyrics are less repetitive and because of the reference to the Model T. But as "folk" songs are wont to do, this parody has probably seen many various incarnations. : ) Here's another LMCYS parody that I either made up or remembered (or some combination thereof): You can't call me sweetheart, 'cause I'm mad at you Since I found you smooching with my best friend, Lou. You deserve a shiner in those eyes of blue, Don't you call me sweetheart, 'cause I'm mad at you. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Let Me Call You Sweetheart From: Jim Dixon Date: 19 Aug 10 - 09:45 PM I found this quoted in a novel, "A Murderous Yarn" by Monica Ferris: Let me call you Lizzie, I'm in love with you; Let me hear you rattle down the av-e-nue; Keep your headlights glowing, and your taillight, too; Let me call you Lizzie, I'm in debt for you! Miscellaneous other versions: Let me call you Lizzie, I'm in love with you. Let me see your head lights and your tail lights too. Keep your wipers wiping on your windshield new. Let me call you Lizzie, you old Ford you. Let me call you Lizzie, I'm in debt for you. Let me hear you rattle as you used to do. Keep your headlights burning and your taillights too. Let me call you Lizzie, I'm in debt for you." |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Let Me Call You Sweetheart From: Louie Roy Date: 20 Aug 10 - 12:06 PM Does anyone have the correct chords for this song in the key of G for the 2 verses not the Chorus? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Let Me Call You Sweetheart From: Jim Dixon Date: 20 Aug 10 - 03:56 PM Someone more musically literate than I could probably look at the sheet music and figure out some workable chords. (Click to download a PDF file from the Levy Collection.) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Let Me Call You Sweetheart From: leeneia2 Date: 21 Aug 10 - 02:22 PM Are you interested in those chords, Jim? If you have a music program that reads MIDI,I could PM you a copy. I think. Do PM's accept attachments? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Let Me Call You Sweetheart From: Jim Dixon Date: 26 Aug 10 - 11:47 AM Leeneia2: No, I am not personally interested in the chords. I was only suggesting a method that might work for Louie Roy, who requested chords. No, I don't think PMs accept attachments. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Let Me Call You Sweetheart From: leeneia Date: 09 Jan 21 - 11:11 AM We did this as the couples' waltz last February, before the quarantine began. I looked it up at the Levy site and learned that the original has "eyes so true," not "eyes so blue." The band was glad to hear that, because every member except me has brown eyes. |
