Some of you may remember this as one of the background songs in "The Rose" with Bette Midler (great movie).

Her Joplin-type character hums and sings this song on several occasions. She says she learned it from Furry Lewis.

Yes, I admit that I've seen the Laurel & Hardy routine involving this song. I refuse, however, to consider this an admission of advancing age...

If I were President, they'd call me "young." If I were Pope, they'd call me downright "youthful." They might be more correct to call me "youthless," but that's another matter...

Yes... "The Rose"... one of the best movies of all time. Still the award for best rendition of "Let me call you Sweetheart" surely must go to Alfalfa of Little Rascal Fame... Brings a smile just to think of it. If you have never seen it, surely you must.

I'm only 40..oops..41 as of yesterday and the last time I sang this song was on a Player Piano at an Inn in Cape May, NJ. 1989. It was a snowy day in January. We sang Galway Bay and By the Light of The Silvery Moon too. Funny thing is, amongst the Rolls, we found on roll for the theme to the 1960's BATMAN TV Show! That was startling!

These things kept going later than you think.

I was amazed in the mid 80s to go to an old pub that still had a piano-roll player, to find that among the rolls were things like Ton Jones' Deliliah. Like Batman - well into the 60s.

Snuffy..you got that right. In that old Inn, we found rolls with Broadway tune up through the late 60's plus some odd pop tunes from the early 70's. I think right on up through the early 80's player rolls were still made.

Boy that was such a nice memory to have just recalled, that afternoon at that inn! It was cold and snowing and a bunch of us couples who didn't know oneanother had come in from the cold to sip Brandy and figure out how in heck to amuse ourselves. Some of us found the rolls, figured out how to use the piano and had a blast. I particularly enjoyed singing the older songs. I was easily the youngest one there. In 1989 I was..lemme see... all of 25! My beau at the time was 37. Everyone else in the room was in their 50s and 60s. (this was before 'Dave')

Years later, when I married "Dave', I foun d that quite a lot of homes in NJ have Player Pianos. It seemed as if wherever I went meeting his relatives when we were first married...there was a player piano! Maybe they just kept dragging the same one from house to house to make me feel welcome?

Maybe it was a Law or something in the 60s.

"You live in Jersey?? You must own a Player Piano!"

I dunno. I'm from NYC where the law was..

"You're from NYC? Your mamma forces you to take Piano Lessons!"
(not that they ever did me any good. I only play a bit)

I've mentioned this in another recent thread but if you go to http://members.shaw.ca/smythe/archive.htm you can hear MIDI re-creations of thousands of those old rolls. Don't sound too bad with a good soundcard and set of speakers - and beats the hell out of pumping. I own a pianola with a lot of rolls, but my bellows are about buggered.

I went to a family reunion in Detroit a couple of weeks ago. One of the high points of the trip was a family tour of the original Model T factory at 461 Piquette Avenue, Detroit. There was a prominent display of a blueprint of a Model T - with my grandfather's initials on it for two changes he made. On the tour, they treated us like royalty because our grandfather had been a neighbor, friend, and employee of Henry Ford.

I prefer the version I learned, Joe, because its lyrics are less repetitive and because of the reference to the Model T.
But as "folk" songs are wont to do, this parody has probably seen many various incarnations.

I remember someone singing "let me call you sweetheart" and it was from a movie or film, etc. I remember hearing it as a child and I can't seem to reach the memory. It's just the "let me call you sweetheart" part that is so incredibly nostaglic

Think about it - when you heard it (year), context, who (male, female), etc. and with enough clues you'll be surprised how quickly some of the Mudcatters here can identify sources.

We did this as the couples' waltz last February, before the quarantine began. I looked it up at the Levy site and learned that the original has "eyes so true," not "eyes so blue."

The band was glad to hear that, because every member except me has brown eyes.
