Not quite mp3.com ... but I've recently had an mp3 of mine placed on The Mandolin Cafe.

It's the track by Aidan Crossey - my name in the real world - called "Gerry Crossey's Tune and Gerry Crossey's Hornpipe" - a set of tunes named in honour of my late da, RIP.

The track can be accessed here.

Further info on this and other of my original tunes can be accessed here.

Let's know what you think!

damn, I never seem to have time to update my mp3 site...or get to the mudcat much.

It's all because they strictly forbade us from surfing at work...the blue meany Maoists at Bell Sympatico...where I am also strictly forbidden to post a message on any web site or chat room stating that I am a help-desk technician for Bell Sympatico.

Oh, I didn't say that did I?

AliUK, you can sign up as a new artist at mp3.com and get a page for free, and then it is just a matter of following the instructions on the site to upload mp3 sound files and customize the way your page looks. It probably isn't worth paying for the extra service unless you expect to get alot of traffic. Start out with the free page. There are instructions at www.mp3.com. If you run into a specific problem, one of us who has gone through the routine can probably help you.

the station thing is a nightmare of sorting, so if you make good music, I would love you to suggest some of your stuff to me.

PLEASE NOTE!

I have ones for Welsh, Irish, Scottish & English, 'Celtic' Best Women in Folk, (Best Men in folk is nearly full) english folk excellence, Ghosts/legends, Celtic Nations, etc...

I need to know, proposed song title/s, genre, style of song, male or female singer, or group, whether harmony etc...

So please email me via the contact link at www.mp3.com/Mad_Rush

John's been embarassing Simon (my son) and me (from the last line) for the last 8 years - toast always goes down well at festivals etc..... and we're still searching for the origins of the lawsuit - only other person known to have recorded it was John's Mother!

Hi, John, good to see you here.

I signed up with John at Celtic Ways to be my mp3.com promoter back around the time I started this thread. He is modest in not telling you more about his extensive music background and involvement with bands in Scotland and Britain, and now in the US (and worldwide, through mp3.com). John works very hard to keep the artists in Celtic Ways updated with information about all the Celtic Ways groups, their performances, new music, reviews, and strategies in getting the music we love listened to. He is a very positive force in forming connections among the Celtic Ways groups in different regions of the country, encouraging bands to get together for performances, keeping everyone informed on new developments on almost a daily basis with his email newsletter.

John has a very positive and hardworking approach to helping the world music artists that he promotes. Two of the most successful in world music at mp3.com are Celtic Ways artists, The Brobdingnadian Bards and Brendan O'Loughlin. Here is just a bit of what John has had to say about their path to being successful at reaching a very wide listening audience at mp3.com:

---
"The formula is still the same as it always has been in music. You must put more effort into building a fan base than into selling music products. Right through history musicians have been beggars because nobody ever owes them anything. There is not a market out there that is going to snatch your music products the moment they are released. Nobody really cares about what you do or that you even exist - until you build your own fan base.

Music touches the soul so you have to find the souls your music touches, heals, excites and is a friend to. When you network these souls together you'll have an extended network of soul mates that will naturally look out for all new music you provide."
end quote ----

In spite of all its flaws, at this time I still find mp3.com to be the best way to reach people with my music. For me, being isolated in Montana, it is even more an important vehicle for sharing the music I love, since there are no large local populations to perform to. I recall a time back in about '97 when I posted a message here at Mudcat wishing that we could actually hear each other's voices singing. The response was that there was no way - audio files being too big (at least at that time).

Now the internet is losing many sites because they cannot be profitable enough to stay online. I'm not sure about the outcome of every tactic that mp3.com has chosen to try to remain solvent, but I have found that of all the places I've listed my music, it is still the best vehicle to get it to people whom it "touches, heals, excites and is a friend to".

Alice

From: GUEST,Celtic Ways

Mixed feelings about MP3.com in this forum. I've been one of their top NMA promoters since Christmas and joined last September but only handle Celtic and folk music rather than the common electronica that dominates the top MP3.com spots.

Like many folks I have been niggled by the recent frequent changes by the company, but I have also placed music on other sites around the net - and still find MP3.com the most responsive. Visitors are still very happy. I hand a lot of business cards out to people I talk to each week which sends new people to MP3.com each week. Several get back to me telling me they are having great fun on the site with all that new quality music.

It leads me to believe that if all artists on MP3.com are active in sending new people to MP3.com it will maintain a profitable place for all artists.

Regarding covering the new $20 PAS, I have been surprised by a new solution. Some of my new artists have covered their PAS not by downloads but from profits from the new "Back The Band" program. That really works! Its also shooting up the hits on my pages, which leads to more hits for the artists on the Celtic Ways roster.

Every success to you all

John Celtic Ways Jukebox

Hello all, I've just set up a page on mp3.com amid unrest and unease wiv der management. I hope I've done the right thing, but if not, hopefully not too much harm done. I was going to say, they're only songs, but that's not true. They may be only songs to some people but they're all the world to us!!!

The band name is Mad Rush and we've got songs there about Anne Boleyn (not the one with her head underneath her arm - shame)a rousing chorus song, Soldiers of Britain, and a couple of trad tracks, a new spine-tingling arrangement of the Trees They Do Grow High and the beautiful and haunting Peninsular War song, Lisbon.

Hope some of you have time for a listen.

Cheers Deni

As long as the other artist is owned by the same admin, there is no problem putting your tracks up on different artist pages.

But if you work with someone else to produce a song, and both want to put it up on both artists' pages, then you would have to write to coversongs@mp3.com before even uploading the track, and be prepared to fax written permission to them. Also, be prepared for them to lose the info... so keep it handy to resend it.

That's as far as I know.

hespy is dead on. I don't bother to correspond with mp3.com since I have no taste for reading propaganda.

That said, I still have my mp3 page up. and have been adding some stuff from my archives. Mostly old 4-track recordings I made with my friend Becca in the late 80's, we're going to make them available as a CD soon. "Do You Love An Apple", "Lovely On THe Water" and some Archie Fisher and instrumentals.

That's the latest...

There is an easy to use stats engine created by Allan Handelman that mp3.com artists can go to for checking downloads, complete plays and partial plays. It is easier than logging into the artist admin area at mp3.com. You can check stats using the band ID number on your calendar URL. stats engine page

I changed the url for my page, it is now www.mp3.com/chagall

I am getting increasingly frustrated with mp3.com's lack of good customer service and caring, and I would recommend other bands who are starting out in the digital music world to put their music up at iuma, or musicbuilder. Maybe put up a couple of tracks on mp3.com, so that you can be featured on stations, but don't make it your main focus. They introduced a "Premium Artist Service" or PAS, where if you want to get paid per play by them, you have to first pay them $20 per month. They are still listing the "amount earned" right on the page of non-PAS artists, even though those artists are NOT earning anything from them. It is extremely misleading.

I will gradually be moving my stuff elsewhere, after a succesion of responses to my letters that were full of propaganda, and did not even answer my questions or concerns...

Good Luck!
