Does anyone know anyonewho collects songs featuring the telephone or telephone operators? (Hello Central, Give Me Heaven... or think of how many times Chuck Berry refers to both in his songs.)

Any help will be gratefully acknowledged, including in any published articles.

Thanks.

Susan Davis

Go to Levy Sheet Music Search, put telephone in the first blank, hit the Search button, and you should get 29 songs that feature the word telephone, some of them quite well known old songs. You can also go to The Library of Congress Search, but on the right side of the first screen, be sure to click on the Limit Search to: Sheet Music first, then enter telephone on the next screen, otherwise, you'll get way too many items. That turns up 26 more, some of them duplicates of the Levy site.

One overlooked telephone song: David Blue's "Atlanta Farewell." Heard him play it once, never was able to find the LP it was on.

One I didn't see in the DT is "Hello My Honey, hello my baby, hello my ragtime gal" and DeDannan does one called "Operator" on the album 1/2 Set in Harlem. Can't remember any lyrics, and can't put the tape in because Mr. is sleeping, CopernicSearch was no help at all. Anybody know the one I'm talking about?

Can't forget B.B. King's "Telephone Song" on the tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan!

National Public Radio's show "All Things Considered" has an occasional segment called "Lost and Found Sound". One of the first pieces they did was on the telephone, and they had some songs, including the verses to "Hello Ma Baby", as well as the chorus. They have a spot on their website (www.npr.org) within the "All Things Considered" section for Lost and Found Sound. I don't think the program's archived for downloading, but they would probably answer an e-mail to point you in the right direction.
Possibly less useful, a singer named Martin Henry performed a song called "Hello Hawaii" on the 1973 (I think) San Diego Folk festival album. Its about a lovelorn Captain Jinks (dates it there, doesn't it?) hearing about the new wireless telephone and calling his lady love in Hawaii.
For I had to pawn nearly everything I own
To talk from New York on the wireless telephone,
Hello, Hawaii, I love you, goodbye."

I know that Martin Henry was based around San Fransisco in the 1970's, but I can't help any more than that, and unfortunately I haven't got the technology to transfer it through the computer. However, if you PM me, I can mail you a casette.

MofH....Richie Kavanagh has his Mobile Phone song.

My girlfriend has a mobile phone,
Now we can't spend a minute alone,
Each night when I ask her for a kiss
She says hang on now til I answer this!!

Another good old *land-line* song is "Sylvia's Mother" by Dr. Hook. The whole song is done over the phone to Mrs. Avery.
