Hi,

I believe the pronunciation differs depending on which part of Ireland you're in. I learnt Irish for a while at school in N.Ireland and when I met someone who'd learnt Irish in Cork their pronunciation of common phrases was quite different

I claim 'go row my uggit' is the correct way to say it !

Sean

Is doigh liom go bfuill an cheart ag an t-uasal Mac Ruaraidh. It does depend on where in the country you live or l;earn the Irish Language and both Fiolar and Neill are also correct for the dialect they are using. Slawn

To explain:

"Go raibh maith agat" literally means "May good(ness) be with you"

It is rather complicated when you think of it!

But we Irish never use one word when we can get away with four.

Go raibh = may (something) be

mait = good (i.e the "something", in this phrase)

agat = with you

There isn't really any short version of "go raibh maith agat", but Aran people slur it into "gurra maaaht".

It is possible to use the Irish word "buiochas" (bwee cus) which simply means "thanks". It is worth pointing out that the pronounciation for Irish words using English word "sound-alikes" is a best a poor substitute. M

It may look like a long sweep of words, but spoken it doesn't take any longer than saying "thank you" (T'tha n'k yough).

Hi,

Surely the time it takes to say it depends on whether you say it in 6/8 time or 2/4 time.

Maybe its best said in Single Jig mode !

Also - what about the emphasis - I would put it on the 'maith' rather than the 'go', 'raibh' or 'agat' !

Cheers,

Sean.

While folks have got their Gaelic lexicons out, I've been searching for the word for "moon" and any handy related expressions...like "new moon", "moonlight", etc. What I'm looking for is something I can use for a new e-mail address, since I'm of Irish descent, and my last name is Moon, and I've long since given up hope of being able to use anything English with Moon in it as a log-in. It'ss too late for that!
