CASH ON THE BARRELHEAD
(Ira & Charlie Louvin/Acuff-Rose, BMI, 1956)

I got in a little trouble at the county seat
And they put me in the jailhouse for loafin' on the street.
When the judge heard the verdict, he said, "You're guilty, man."
He gave me forty-five dollars, thirty days in the can.
"That'll be cash on the barrelhead, son,
Not part in cash, the entire sum.
No money down, no credit plan.
Give me cash on the barrelhead. I'm a busy man."

I found a telephone number on a laundry slip.
I had a good-hearted jailer with a six-gun hip.
He let me call long distance. She said, "Number, please."
Just as soon as I told her, she shouted back at me,
"That'll be cash on the barrelhead, son,
Not part in cash, the entire sum.
No money down, no credit plan.
'Cause a little bird tells me you're a travelin' man."

Thirty days in the jailhouse, four days on the road.
I was feelin' mighty hungry, my feet's a heavy load.
I saw a Greyhound comin'. I stuck out my thumb.
Soon as I was seated, the driver caught my arm.
"That'll be cash on the barrelhead, son.
This old gray dog gets paid to run.
When the engine stops and the wheels don't roll,
Give me cash on the barrelhead, I'll take you down the road."

[As performed by the Dreadful Snakes on "Snakes Alive!" Rounder 0177 (1995) and on "Songs of the Louvin Brothers," Easydisc ED CD 7034 (1997). JTD]

WE LIVE IN TWO DIFFERENT WORLDS
(Fred Rose/Milene Music, ASCAP)

(Cho.:) We live in two different worlds, dear.
That's why we're so far apart.
You made a world out of vows that were broken.
I've built a world in my heart.

Everyone here tried to warn me
That you were playin' a game.
I told them all we were meant for each other.
I thought our worlds were the same. (Cho.)

If you stay over in your world,
Oh, how my heart it would pine.
Darling, some day, when your memories wander,
Won't you come over in mine? (Cho.)

We live in two different worlds, dear.
My world is honest and true.
Sweetheart, remember, when your world gets lonely,
I'll still be waiting for you. (Cho.)

[As performed by Ricky Skaggs on "Family and Friends" Rounder 0151 (1982) and on "Songs of the Louvin Brothers," Easydisc ED CD 7034 (1997). JTD]

ARE YOU AFRAID TO DIE?
(Ira Louvin, Eddie Hill & Charlie Louvin/Opryland, BMI, 1958)

Are you a stranger to God, carried away with your pride?
Tell me, sinner, did you ever stop to think, are you afraid to die?

Call on Him while He is near. Moments are swift passing by.
Will you seek Him while He may be found? Are you afraid to die?

(Cho.:) Are you afraid? Are you unsaved? Are you afraid to die?

Are you too wicked to cry? Would you to God's bosom fly?
Soon He's coming like a thief in the night. Are you afraid to die? (Cho. twice)

[As performed by the Nashville Bluegrass Band on "To Be His Child" Rounder 0242 (1987) and on "Songs of the Louvin Brothers," Easydisc ED CD 7034 (1997). JTD]

MAKE HIM A SOLDIER
(Charlie & Ira Louvin/Acuff-Rose, BMI)

Listen to the gentle call. There is work for one and all.
Join in the fight. Walk in the light.
Do whatever you can do, then the Lord will see you through,
Tryin' us all to win.
(Cho.:) Make him a soldier. Heed now the call.
Help win the vict'ry. He died to save us all.

Walk along the rocky shore where the mighty ocean roars.
Many today are drifting away.
Sing aloud of saving grace. Tell the news to ev'ry race.
Bid them to anchor in. (Cho.)

Do your work and never fret, and the Savior won't forget.
Carry the cross. Look for the loss.
You must brave the swelling tide if you'd reach the other side.
Be a soldier brave. (Cho.)

SEVEN YEAR BLUES
(Eddie Hill, Charlie Louvin & Ira Louvin /Acuff-Rose, BMI, 1949)

Just seven years ago today was when you said goodbye.
It broke my heart to see you go and yet I could not cry.

You kissed me sweet and said goodbye but I could not believe
That you would ever make me cry unwanted and to grieve.

The sun is slowly sinking down to mark the close of day,
To mark the end of seven years, the ending of my way.

I have no one to stand by me to count these bitter tears.
I could never live these awful blues another seven years.

I've waited seven years today to see your face once more.
And if our life could be as one, I'd wait ten thousand more.

(Repeat verse 3.)

From: Jim Dixon

I'M GONNA LOVE YOU ONE MORE TIME
(Ira & Charlie Louvin/Acuff-Rose, BMI)

Oh, I've just read the letter you wrote me,
And these tear stains you cannot deny.
I can see that you're tired of your new love,
So I'll answer in just a few lines.
(Cho.:) I'm gonna love you one more time,
And give you a chance to be true.
If you leave me again, we'll no longer be friends,
For I'm tired of playing hide-and-seek with you.

After searching this wide world all over,
I'm surprised to have found you again.
I had made up my mind to forget you,
But my heart was too broken to mend.

Once you hid in the arms of another,
But now you are trying to please.
From the cold empty world that he left you,
You are ready to come back to me.

YOU'RE RUNNING WILD
(Ray Edenten & Don Winters/Acuff-Rose, BMI, 1956)

You're running wild. How long can this go on?
You're leaving me alone and running wild.
You're always gone. My love you'll never share.
It's more than I can bear. You're running wild.

You'll settle down some day and find I've gone away.
You'll think of what you've done while running wild.
I can't go on. You'll have to choose the way.
You'll have to go or stay. Stop running wild.

(Repeat 2nd verse)

LOVE AND WEALTH
(Ira & Charlie Louvin/Acuff-Rose, BMI)

Darling, I'm all alone in a little mountain home.
It's lonely cold and loveless now inside,
For your childish vows of love lasted only one short year,
Then you went away to be another's bride.
(Cho.:) You will never know the pain that I felt when you left.
Should you ever wed again, let me wish you love and wealth.

Now that same old whippoorwill breaks the silence on the hill,
As I stand and gaze upon that faded wall
Where your picture used to hang in a little golden frame,
And the image of your smile I still recall. (Cho. twice)

HERE TODAY AND GONE TOMORROW
(Jim & Maxine Brown/Jamie Music, BMI)

Here today and gone tomorrow,
Our love will always be a hit-and-run affair.
I know you love me, but you're just a wand'rer.
Today I love you but tomorrow I may not care.
(Cho.:) For absence never makes the heart grow fonder.
I get lonesome for someone's company.
Here today and gone tomorrow,
And my loving you is just a fantasy.

When you're gone I'll wish we'd never met,
For your memory remains within my heart.
Here today and gone tomorrow,
We can't be happy, so I guess it's best we part. (Cho.)

From: Jim Dixon
Date: 29 Oct 00 - 06:52 PM

MY BABY CAME BACK
(Ira & Charlie Louvin/Acuff-Rose, BMI, 1958)

My baby got tired of a new love.
My baby came back to a true love,
And now my heart is beating with ease.
My love, my kiss is able to please.
(Cho.:) My baby is loving me better.
My baby is sweeter than ever.
No more sleepless nights alone and so black.
My sweetheart, my baby came back.

Some lose at love and they never love again.
I'm tasting love that I thought I'd never win.
I thought my heart would take the wrong track.
I'm glad that I waited. My baby came back. (Cho.)

(Repeat 2nd verse, 1st verse, and chorus)

[An answer song to the Louvins' "My Baby's Gone." As performed by Laurie Lewis & Tom Rozum on "The Oak and the Laurel," Rounder 0340 (1995) and on "Songs of the Louvin Brothers," Easydisc ED CD 7034 (1997). JTD]

From: Jim Dixon
Date: 29 Oct 00 - 06:54 PM

WHEN I STOP DREAMING
(Charlie & Ira Louvin/Acuff-Rose, BMI, 1955)

The worst that I've ever been hurt in my life,
The first time I ever wanted to die,
Was the night when you told me you loved someone else,
And asked me if I could forget.
(Cho.:) When I stop dreaming, that's when I'll stop loving you.

I'd be like a flower unwanted in spring,
Alone and neglected, transplanted in vain
To a garden of sadness where its petals will fall
In the shadow of undying pain. (Cho.)

You can teach the flowers to bloom in the snow.
You may take a pebble and teach it to grow.
You can teach all the raindrops to return to the cloud,
But you can't teach my heart to forget. (Cho. twice)

[As performed by Del McCoury & the Dixie Pals on "High on a Mountain," Rounder 0019 (1972) and on "Songs of the Louvin Brothers," Easydisc ED CD 7034 (1997). JTD]

I DON'T BELIEVE YOU'VE MET MY BABY
(Autry Inman/Tree Publishing Co., Inc., BMI, 1956)

Last night, my dear, the rain was falling. I went to bed so sad and blue.
Then I had a dream of you.
I dreamed I was strolling in the evening underneath the harvest moon.
I was thinking about you.
And then you met me in the moonlight. The stars were shining in your eyes.
But another was there too.

"I don't believe you've met my baby." You looked at him. You looked at me.
I wondered who you were talking to.
I shook the hand of your stranger but I was shakin' more inside.
I was still a-wond'rin' who.

Your arm was restin' on his shoulder. You smiled at him. He smiled at you.
His eyes were filled with victory.
He said, "My sister wants to marry," and then my heart was filled with ease.
I knew that you would marry me.

[As performed by Hugh Moffatt & Katy Moffatt on "Dance Me Outside," Philo 1144 (1992) and on "Songs of the Louvin Brothers," Easydisc ED CD 7034 (1997). JTD]

Subject: Lyr Add: THE ANGELS REJOICED LAST NIGHT^^
From: Lonesome EJ
Date: 29 Oct 00 - 08:37 PM

The Angels Rejoiced Last Night

A house, not a home, was the picture Satan painted
For sweet little sister and me
Our Daddy would frown while Mother was praying
His heart was so hardened that he would not believe

In anger he'd swear, his voice cold and loud
His Sundays were spent out with the gambling crowd
I'd never seen my Daddy inside the House of God
For Satan held his hand, down the path of sin he trod

Not long ago, our circle was broken
When God called on Mother one night
In a voice sweet and low, her last words were spoken
Asking our Daddy to raise her children right

The Angels rejoiced in Heaven last night
I heard my Daddy pray "Dear God, Make it right"
He was smiling and singing with tears in his eyes
While Mother with the Angels rejoiced last night
While Mother with the Angels rejoiced last night.

C and I Louvin

This is a transcription from HERE. Do I have it right? See bracketed text in refrain. Weary bones? Weepy bawls? Weepy hearts? Willie dogs? Winter bums? Huh??!?!

LET US TRAVEL ON
Louvin Brothers version

There's a home high up in heaven
Where with saints I'll ever dwell
When the road of life is ended
And I'll bid this world farewell.

REFRAIN:
There's no [weeping there] in heaven
Only gladness will be known
Sinner come accept the Savior
Let us travel, travel on.

I have giv'n my heart to Jesus
Turned away from sin and shame
In that book of life in Heaven
God has written down my name.

When this weary life is over
And the saints are marching home
Will your soul be safe from sorrow,
Or in sin be ye unknown?

This site says the line is "There's no weary one in heaven." I listened to the sound file you indicated, and it sounds to me like "weary ones." Also, verse 3, line 3 sounds like "Will your soul be freed from sorrow." Other than that, I think you nailed it.

Well thanks Jim. But I had a GREAT time making up all sorts of silly phrases with Hardiman, even after posting the ones above. (There are a LOT of things you would not expect to find in heaven! *G*) God only knows which words will come out of my neck when we do it in church! Thanks for your help-- sorry I missed seeing your reply till now or we'd have done this one tonight! *G*

When I Stop Dreaming" is one of the most intense, vivid and mesmerizing songs I've ever heard. The Louven's harmonies triple those effects.

Sooooooooo, how many times did Charlie Louvin's wife shoot him ???

=================================

THE FAMILY WHO PRAYS

REFRAIN:
The family who prays will never be parted.
Their circle in heaven unbroken shall stand!
God will say, "Enter my good faithful servant."
The family who prays never shall part.

Satan has parted fathers and mothers
Filling their hearts with his envy and hate
Aiding their pathway down to destruction
Leaving their children like orphans to stray

Wars and tornadoes are taking our loved ones,
Leaving us tearful with sad, aching hearts.
But we shall join them over the river--
For the family who prays never shall part.

Susan: I agree that "weariness" is fitting. Who cares how the Louvin Brothers sang it? I say, if you can figure out a way to improve a song, go for it! In performance, that is. In a songbook, or in DigiTrad, I still like to have the original version documented, if possible. Improvements can be suggested in footnotes.

I guess what I hope folks remember is that while the historical correctness of the song is important, I'm not "performing" these-- I'm putting them right into the worship service of a hierarchical denomination that thinks carefully about everything. So for our Saturday Night Service, I am responsible for making a concert song into a worship song. Sometimes that means a shift in theology, sometimes an extension of themes into our daily lives, etc.

I was affirmed in this recently by a Baptist minister who is taking a bit of a break from active ministry to re-evaluate some things and who is worshipping with us on Saturday nights for a time. He said that in the churches that have gone all "praise" music, and also are not credal-- meaning in that context their worship does not include a recitation of a specific creed-- the music is all that's left to keep it all from making the overall message "too human." So in addition to my own care about that, and my husband's authority to give or deny the OK to use a piece in our services, apparently the congregation is keeping a closer eye than I thought, too.

Take that "FAMILY WHO PRAYS" item above-- there are going to be a lot of people in our denomination who are going to hear one of those verses as a condemnation of a divorce they were forced into when someone left, and a hopelessness about their now-smaller family. Even though that is probably not the main point the Louvin's were trying to make in that verse, it will get in the way and cause some inadvertent pain. I may take that verse out and write something else when we do it.

My band The James Boys recorded a version of "Knoxville Girl" for (The Legendary) Joe Meek, back in the 60s. However it was never released because it was too "Violent" and "would't get any airplay". Strange really because "Banks of the Ohio" (similar story) was freely available and being played. Joe would never give dubs from his sessions so I do not have a copy of it, however, there is a copy somewhere amongst the infamous Tea Chest Tapes so maybe it will come to light one day. This is really of no consequence but I thought that there may be a Louvin Brothers archivist who would be interested in the info. michael.batory@bcuc.ac.uk

Thanks, Michael!

Here is the version of FAMILY WHO PRAYS we will use in our church. I shifted the emphasis just slightly to make it about the whole family of God, in heaven, and the truth that in life, nothing can really separate us from the love of God.

~Susan

THE FAMILY WHO PRAYS
Louvin Brothers; edited and additional verse by Susan O. Hinton

REFRAIN:
The family who prays will never be parted.
Their circle in heaven unbroken shall stand!
God will say, "Welcome, my good faithful servant,
To the family of saints who never shall part."

Wars and tornadoes are taking our loved ones,
Leaving us tearful with sad, aching hearts.
But we shall join them over the river--
For the family who prays never shall part.

Satan has parted one from another,
Filling their hearts with his envy and hate,
Aiding their pathway down to destruction,
Leaving them acting like orphans who've strayed.

Families surround us who don't know our Savior,
And prayer is no part of their lives and their way.
When we adopt them, as we were adopted,
God's family grows closer to Him day by day.

Here is the fourth verse I wrote for this:

Life without end in exchange for our sin,
Strength for the days of our times,
Gifts unimagined and Grace flowing in,
Love without reason or rhyme.

~Susan

===============================================

JESUS IS WHISPERING NOW
Louvin Brothers

Life is a gift that we all must lay down,
Whether we be rich or poor.
And Jesus is willing to give us a crown
And fill us with love that is pure.

REFRAIN:
Jesus is whispering, whispering now,
"Why will you wait, why will you wait?"
Jesus is whispering, whispering now,
List' to his voice, don't turn Him away.

Willing to bow in the presence of God,
Trying to win the reward,
Wandering home on this path that I've trod,
Willing to work for the Lord.

THE WEAPON OF PRAYER
Louvin Brothers version, edited by Susan O. Hinton.
Source: http://www.geocities.com/cybertoy99/5594.ram

In that land across the sea,
There's a job for you and me
Though our presence there may not be found.
We must stay each night and day
On the battle line and pray.
We must never lay our weapons down.

REFRAIN:
We don't have to be a soldier in a uniform
To be of service over there.
While the boys so bravely stand
With the weapons made by hands--
Let us trust and use the weapon of prayer.

Many thousand miles away
Someone's shed their blood today.
With a heart so true and brave they've gone.
To a war that's yours and mine,
Let us join the battle line.
With the weapon that will save our home.

When the flames and tanks and guns
Have done all that they can do,
And the mighty bombs have rained and failed,
Still the Master's hand above
Holds the weapon made of love,
And against Him not all earth prevail.

JUST REHEARSING
Louvin Brothers

CHORUS:
We're just rehearsing! we're just rehearsing!
And someday we'll sing together in a band around God's throne.
This old world (cannot reward us) cannot reward us (this old world cannot reward us)
We are just (just) just rehearsing for that singing up Home.

This old world is nothing but a dressing place
Where we make preparations to spend an endless day.
Until the curtain opens and it's thy time to sing,
We are just rehearsing songs of praise to the King.

When I sing of Jesus, of His saving grace,
I feel His blessed presence, my Soul He does embrace.
Sometimes I get so happy I forget my song,
To know I've been invited to that singing up Home.

We'll sing the song of Moses with words of sweetest praise
To God and all His glory; we'll see Him face to face
And hear the voices ringing of loved ones who are gone.
We'll blend our voice with angels in that singing up Home.

From: wysiwyg

Hear it HERE.

~Susan

HE WAS WAITING AT THE ALTAR
As Recorded by the Louvin Brothers

He was waiting at the altar
When I knelt there, He lifted me.
When I trusted in Him it was over,
And my sin-sick soul He set free.
I had searched everywhere but could not find Him
Till I said, "Precious Lord, have Thy way!"
When I opened my heart, I felt His blood rushing in!
He was waiting at the altar, for me!

I was wandering aimless, I had searched far and wide
But I failed to find peace for my soul.
Like a lost weary traveler, then, I sat down and cried
For my burdens were too great a load.
Full of pride, and conceited, I was lost and astray
Till I laid down my soul at His feet.
I found Christ was the answer, and He met me halfway—
He was waiting at the altar, for me!

From: Sorcha
Date: 07 Apr 02 - 04:05 PM

Somebody requesting this said it was by the Louvins, so I'll add it. If it's not, someone can correct me.......

FOOLIN' AROUND

I know that you've been foolin' around on me right from the start
So I'll give back your ring and I'll take back my heart
And when you're tire of foolin' around with two or three

Just come on home and fool around with me.
Then come on home and fool around with me.

Well I wasn't foolin' around the day I said I do
But many a night I wished that I had been a-foolin' too
I know it's foolish taking all this misery
But when it's you a fool I'll always be

So honey fool around. You know right where I'm at
And don't worry if I'm lonesome cause I'm used to that
And when you're tire of foolin' around with two or three
Then come on home and fool around with me

I know that you've been foolin' around on me right from the start
So I'll give back your ring and I'll take back my heart
And when you're tire of foolin' round with two or three
Just come on home and fool around with me.

(Ira Louvin/Charles Louvin)
recorded 9/30/52

Ira Louvin vocals, mandolin
Charlie Louvin vocals, guitar
Chet Atkins electric guitar
Eddie Hill (probably) rhythm guitar
Floyd T. "Lightning" Chance bass

Chorus
G C
That word broadminded is spelled s-i-n
G D
I read in my Bible, they shall not enter in.
G C G
For Jesus will answer, Depart, I never knew you
D G
That word broadminded is spelled s-i-n

G C G
Some people say they gamble now and then for pleasure
G D
And drink a little whiskey just to please a friend
G C G
They say it's really nothing, you've got to be broadminded
D G
That word in my Bible is spelled "s-i-n".

That broadminded mother goes out and joins a party
There's nothing wrong in drinking and dancing with a friend
And then on Sunday morning, she'll say she loves her savior
She should be begging God to forgive her of her sin.

[spoken, preached]

For to be carnally minded is death
But to be spiritually minded is life and peace
Because the carnal mind is enmity against God
For it is not subject to the law of God
Neither, indeed, can be.
You'll find your word "broadminded" means sin if you'll read.

From: Jim Dixon

HOW'S THE WORLD TREATING YOU
(Chet Atkins, Boudleaux Bryant)

I've had nothing but sorrow
Since you said we were through.
There's no hope for tomorrow.
How's the world treating you?
Ev'ry sweet thing that mattered
Has been broken in two.
All my dreams have been shattered.
How's the world treating you?

Got no plans for next Sunday.
Got no plans for today.
Ev'ry day is Blue Monday,
Ev'ry day you're away.
Though our pathways have parted,
To your mem'ry I'm true.
Guess I'll stay broken-hearted.
How's the world treating you?

Do you wonder about me
Like I'm hoping you do?
Are you lonesome without me?
Have you found someone new?
Are you burning and yearning?
Do you ever get blue?
Do you think of returning?
How's the world treating you?

Do you think of returning?
How's the world treating you?

[As sung by James Taylor and Alison Krauss on "Livin, Lovin, Losin: The Songs of the Louvin Brothers," Universal CD #45802, 2003. Also recorded by Eddy Arnold, Chet Atkins, Don Gibson, Sonny James, The Louvin Brothers, Helen Merrill, The Osborne Brothers, Elvis Presley, Jim Reeves, and several others.]

FOOLIN' AROUND – the song that Sorcha posted above – was written by Harlan Howard and Buck Owens. It has been recorded by Patsy Cline, George Hamilton IV, Waylon Jennings, Buck Owens, Connie Smith, Kay Starr, and several others. There are also several other songs called FOOLIN' AROUND, but I can't find any evidence that the Louvins wrote or recorded any of them.

This afternoon I finally got around to buying the album mentioned by Jim on 13 Jan 05 - 11:17 PM, "Livin, Lovin, Losin: The Songs of the Louvin Brothers," Universal CD #45802, 2003. Definitely recommended. No clinkers, but it did make me want to go back and hear the originals again. I was listening in the car, so sometimes I could tell and sometimes I couldn't tell who was singing, but the one that pulled me up short and made me look was #9 featuring Kathy Louvin, a much older recording from 1988. Somehow it had a slightly better feel to it. Knowing who it was explained it all for me.

1. Introduction to Ira and Charlie Louvin
2. Cash On The Barrelhead - Joe Nichols/Rhonda Vincent
3. My Baby's Gone - Emmylou Harris/Rodney Crowell
4. How's The World Treating You - James Taylor/Alison Krauss
5. I Can't Keep You In Love With Me - Vince Gill/Terri Clark
6. Must You Throw Dirt In My Face - Merle Haggard/Carl Jackson
7. If I Could Only Win Your Love - Ronnie Dunn/Rebecca Lynn Howard
8. When I Stop Dreaming - Glen Campbell/Leslie Satcher
9. I Wish You Knew - Kathy Louvin/Pamela Brown Hayes
10. New Partner's Waltz - Linda Ronstadt/Carl Jackson
11. Are You Teasing Me - Patty Loveless/Jon Randall
12. I Don't Believe You've Met My Baby - Harley Allan/Dierks Bentley
13. You're Running Wild - Larry Cordle/Carl Jackson/Jerry Salley
14. The Angels Rejoiced - Dolly Parton/Sonya Isaacs
15. Let Us Travel, Travel On - Marty Stuart/Del McCoury
16. Keep Your Eyes On Jesus - Pam Tillis/Johnny Cash with the Jordanaires
