What's all this stuff about your boobs, Jen? Do you collect stupid people? That's what "boobs" are, as in "the boob tube". I think you mean "breasts"... :-)

As for gravity, it's simple. Empty space repells all forms of matter. Since there is more empty space outside the Earth, then anything near the Earth is repelled away from the empty space and toward the Earth...or the moon. This is why no substantive idea is able to enter flattop's head, example, but is repelled away in all directions by the empty space therein... :-D

If you drop a watermelon off the CN tower (the world's tallest free standing structure...even longer than Spaw's schlong) it is immediately repelled by the empty space (air) around it and rushes to meet the pavement below, where it atomizes itself utterly in joyous reunion with the world of matter.

From: GUEST,C. G. Hobaugh

Greetings, Roger, I have a surprise for you. There is no gravity! Einstein got incredibly close when he perceived that you can't tell the difference between "gravity" and acceleration. The reason this is true is that "gravity" IS acceleration.

Our ancestors had a hard time believing the planet was round. Modern folk have an equally hard time with my "non-gravity" theory, but here goes, once more for you, Roger.

When I was a young man, I tried to figure out gravity in an attempt to perfect "anti-gravity". To me, the (then and now) current methods of aerospace propulsion, like reaction motors (rockets and jets) and propellers thrashing through the air were very inefficient and very inelegant when compared to your standard flying saucer behavior. I knew there must be a way to duplicate this magic method without all the fury and flailing. Sadly, I finally was able to determine that the thing I was trying to understand, "gravity", was a myth and therefore there was no "anti-gravity" to be had. Now here's the proof:

Premise: Everything, not just the universe, but every object in it, is expanding. Moreover, the rate of expansion is increasing (recently born out by scientific observation, much to the surprise of the observers).

Fact: Objects in contact which are expanding push each other away from their previous position (think about two balloons, touching, being inflated - their centers move away from each other...).

Fact: Objects being moves from their previous position at an increasing rate "feel" an acceleration proportional to that rate (just ask an astronaut during liftoff).

Fact: Given the premise above and the facts following it, it is obvious that we can explain away the need for a separate force called "gravity". One can illustrate this with a simple rearrangement of the classic tale about Newton and the apple. Look at it this way: Sir Isaac thought he was peacefully at rest when all the while he, the tree, the apple, and everything else around him was going UP at a high rate of speed. But, since EVERYTHING was going up at precisely the same speed, he could not perceive the motion. The force he felt on his butt, which everyone called "gravity", was simply the result of inertia resisting the acceleration of the surface of the expanding earth directly beneath and in contact with him. Now, when the apple's stem broke, the apple was no longer tethered to the tree, and thus no longer being pulled (accelerated up) along with everything else and (drum roll here) NEWTON'S HEAD HIT IT!

It's very easy to go along with the big thinkers when they talk about the "expanding universe" and the red shift and all that. It is an entirely different matter to imagine that it is happening right here and right now and in fact at such a maddening velocity due to such a maddening acceleration (32 feet per second, per second, more or less)! Sort of like some damn fool trying to tell you the Earth is round, isn't it?

So, there you are, Roger, to put it yet another way, "Gravity doesn't work, it isn't even there!"

Charlie Hobaugh amateur scientist

P.S. By the way, I finally did find a way to "go up" without rockets or propellers or other such foolishness. Now if I could just find a rich patron to finance my work (I could even pay them back when I win the X prize).

I just noticed a GUEST (Jon Kernow) posting a couple days ago in the Gravity thread, and it occurred to me (because of what I just posted about Nos Galan in Welsh) that another carol I want to find is the Cornish text of the Sans Day Carol (there's English in the Oxford Book of Carols, and I have two Esperanto versions, but I don't think I've ever seen the Cornish (for the uninitiated "Kernow" is Cornish for "Cornwall", and Kernewek is Cornish for Cornish) text. Anybody know where I might find it?

Sorry, Art, even without weight you'd still have just the same amount of mass (minus what you lost during liftoff from having the s*** scared out of you -- I would, anyway).

This is a really heavy subject, you know. I wanted to weigh in earlier but didn't want to come across too heavy. It all comes down to this:

What goes up, must come down
Spinnin' wheel got to go 'round
Talkin' 'bout your troubles, it's a cryin' sin
Ride a painted pony, let the spinning wheel spin...

If I went into space, and weighed nothing, would I then be, miraculously, thin ??

Also: If I was alone in space, would I not be there since nobody else was there to see me?

Hell, it'd be the first time in my life I was ever thin. I could even wear a bathing suit. But nobody would see me.

If I had all the gravity I could muster up, there would be no feminine others to attract so that they might become significant.

Could be I ought to send this to Ann Landers (or KatLaughing).

How does it work?!Well, very good with my bottom-ever heard of the most faminous :"Heavy Bum Syndrome"?!One day your bum starts weighting, and you suddenly feel like giving it some time before waking up,or walking away.It goes on getting heavier. You don't sit,you fall on chairs for ever. It's not a matter of size,or fat:every bum can catch it.It gets heavier and heavier. So,next time you wait before getting up from where you parked your bum, watch out:it could be the first symptom of the Syndrome.True story.

Ask one of the Bible-thumpers or God-botherers that hang out here-they'll explain it to you.

Look, truth of the matter is, gravity doesn't work, never has. face it, gravity doesn't have TIME to work, spending so much time trying to get various objects attracted to each other, keeping the planets in their orbits, and effecting every single speck of matter in the entire universe. How do you expect gravity to have time to WORK? Beside which, gravity is independently wealthy.

RiS, Einstein came up with his space/time theory in his 20s, and worked the rest of his life on the Grand Unified Field Theory (basically a Theory of Everything, which would link gravity, magnetism and electricity together). He didn't make it either, poor bugger - imagine how it must feel spending 60-odd years on that kind of work and still not cracking it.

As for the new asteroid appearing, stuff doesn't (unless you're in Star Trek! ;-) warp into existence. So even at some unimaginable distance the asteroid's gravity will still be affecting all the planets, however microscopically, it's just that as it gets closer the effects become more pronounced.

It seems pretty clear that Einsteinian theory shows the equivalence between the mass-attractive force thought of as gravity, and the phenomena of acceleration of the referential frame within which the observer is measuring the force.

This implies that it is not the case that cumulative mass attracts but that the operational principle is something quite different: spaces accelerate into each other indefinitely in the inverse square law, which is why every time you get to the ned of one, there's another one waiting for you to look across it.

This also explains why space always looks homogenous, because the broders disappear in proportion to the movement of the observer's viewpoint, thus becoming seamless. And the bigger the apparent mass gets, the more spaces are entrained into accelerating into each other from all directions, just like unfettered imaginations galloping inside of weach others' visions. Thus, mass attracts mass (accelerating spaces invite other accelerating space to accelerate into them).

It's simple!

No. It was sent to me in confidence by a friend, whom I do trust. Since those who have flamed me in the most personal ways possible, are cowards and used aliases, how could I possibly substantiate what you want me to substantiate. But I will tell you how it made me feel. It made me feel violated, just like being flamed made me feel. To know one's enemies is one thing. To not know them because they hide behind skirts is another thing altogether. Flamers have very big mouths. They think they are so clever that they just have to tell someone. Maybe, just maybe, that "someone" has more of a conscience than the flamer. So, the seed of doubt has been planted.

You wrote: "And you guys wonder why people flame you...?"

Nah. I don't wonder about flamers anymore. I am a product of the environment and don't have enough trust in me to "wonder."
