Did you ever hear a song that was so great, that you got so "into," that you never wanted it to end?

Actually, yes. Several things by Aileen and Elkin Thomas. "Heart of the Appaloosa", "The Journey", "Bethesda's Pool","It's An All Day Singin".The very first time I ever heard "Danny Boy" or "AshOaken Farewell". Probably lots more, but I will quit now.

It is exquisite, taped it from the radio, cant find the name or the wonderful singer's i.d. Anyone know? Thanks.

Rolling Home (The John Tams version) - but mainly because it's often the last song of a session and I don't want the session to end.
Otherwise anything sung by Chris Gorniak, a singer from Suffolk with the most beautiful deep voice and a lovely line in wistful songs - No More for Me, Bye-Bye Roseanna, Blessed Quietness etc..
He's a regular in the Middle Bar at Sidmouth and the Three Horseshoes' barn at Towersey, and is one of the reasons for me getting so passionate about singing rather than merely listening.

The song I wish would never end I was just listening to last night, which is why I brought it up. It's called "L.O.D. (Love On Delivery)" by The Original Rondells, who were popular in the 60's, and are now part of our Carolina Beach Music scene. It reminds me of my girl...God I wish it would never end!

Noreen,I can't thank you enough-now I guess I can track down the lovely voice. The radio station in Hyde Park,N.Y.has no telephone listing. Hard to believe.Would I be too greedy if I asked about another song? ( for a cousin) She's not positive of the spelling - roughly" Abbe Shule"-about a child remembering school days, barefoot andcold, a real tearjerker. Thanks again.

Eriskay Love Lilt (and where are the WORDS I'd like to know)

Most anything good of Carolan's

Or Stan Rogers, Gordon Bok, DEEP voices, ah.....

Many hymns and contemporary praise pieces

Most of what I hear in HearMe

Melodies that come into my head and then get lost

...And Mbo, I would Waltz Across Texas with you.

Mickey,

The song your cousin is looking for is Abbeyshrule.

The best known version is by Brendan Shine, who has the great artistic distinction (cynical nous, more like) of having released a song about every single county in Ireland. He killed three birds with the one stone when he recorded the gem "Lough Ree, O Lough Ree, where the three counties meet, Longford, Westmeath and Roscommon". Then he started on the towns/villages, which is where Abbeyshrule, Co. Longford comes in.

A search using his name will throw up at least a dozen sites selling his albums. My own search failed to find a site containing the lyrics. Sorry about that.

The Alchemy version of Sultans of Swing, and the full version of Telegraph Road. I'm Your Man by Leonard Cohen. Move Along by Chris Isaak. No Preacher Blues by Davey Graham. And Paint It Black, of course.

Folk-wise, any decent instrumental (Altan, Watersons, etc) can go on as long as it likes!

Grab.

Funny Mbo. Last night I wandered onto Jon Freeman's website and felt exactly that about two pieces - one was Tam Lin (T the R needs to visit too), the other was some banjo music called "Rollercoaster" that Jon wrote for his brother. Of course I can't get enough of you doing Lorena but you hate to hear that.

The last couple of weeks, the songs I wish would never end are an old hymn, "Bright Morning Stars", and a fiddle tune I've been playing a lot called "Spotted Pony". Although now that some of you have mentioned "Rolling Home" that may break into my group as well. I'd forgotten what a good song it is.

Following Sorcha and Banjo Johnny...

It is, indeed, Ashoken. The tune Ashoken Farewell, used with such good effect in the Ken Burns video series on the Civil War, was written by Jay Ungar as the season closer at the music camp he runs annually in New York State (http://www.jayandmolly.com/camp.html). Later, it was incorporated into the video. The camp is one of the great traditional musical experiences of all time. Words to the tune were written by Grian McGregor, an Ashokan "camper." They're indexed in the Mudcat archive.

Just a few words on this subject. Bob Dylan was asked once by an interviewer about which songs he liked by other people, and he said (among other things...) "Gordon Lightfoot...when I hear a Lightfoot song I want it to never end..." Pretty cool, eh? Kind words of praise from Bob. And it so happens that Gord is a very big Dylan fan as well, claiming that Dylan writes better stuff than he can. I believe these were sincere comments in both cases.

Green Island - Christy Moore

Fade Away - June Tabor

All God's Angels - Kate Rusby

And lots more. One tune I always wished would finish sooner was a set of slip jigs that I can't remember the name of at the moment. We played them for the strip the willow. We started out with a slower set like The Keel Row and then suddenly changed to slip jigs. The problem was that towards the end we played faster and faster until the dancers collapsed in a heap and my fingers fell off!!

Well, "It's All Right Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)" is kind of like that, specially in a live concert, and it almost does never end...

Likewise for "Desolation Row" and "Stuck Inside of Mobile With the Memphis Blues Again".

They aren't just songs...they're novelettes.
