Subject: 'Tolpuddle Man' Information
From: GeorgeH

The recent "Tolpuddle 2000" thread reminded me that, some while back, there was a discussion about who composed the Tolpuddle Man material. I've now found our tape of this (marked "Pre-release copy" and undated; bought from the band at a concert performance in Dorchester Corn Exchange a good while ago). The track listing shows:

A Tolpuddle Man: Moore Rigs of the Time: Trad. Captain Swing: Moore The Oath: Ryan/Moore The Road to Dorchester: Ryan/Moore Lament: Wright Uniting Together: Ryan/Moore God is Our Guide: Loveless (a reading, I think) Suffer the Children: Moore Farewell: Moore/Trad Waiting: Moore Gather and Stand: Ryan The Wrong Side of the World: Ryan/Moore The Labour's Cause: Ryan/Moore.

So as was suggested at the time, most of it seems to be "jointly created" by Graham Moore and Mick Ryan.

The whole work is credited to "Endangered Species", whose other members are listed as: Colin Thompson, Chris Robson, Sophie Wright, Tina Leeming, Chas Upton, John Prince, John Bond.

It also says the musical drama "Tolpuddle Man" was "developed in workshop by Endangered Species, and based on George Loveless' account of his experiences as 'leader' of the six Dorset farm labourer . . " However I believe not all of those listed as members of Endangered Species were actually involved in the workshop development of the show . .

Anyway, it's a fine work!

G.

There is a CD available of Tolpuddle Man, but looking at my copy there doesn't seem to be any contact number for ordering other than Graham's phone number, 0966 546153.

Sophie was Grahams partner then, so that is how she got involved, plus she was a teacher and the community plays got a big boost out of the local schools.

Subject: DTADD: A Tolpuddle Man (Graham Moore)^^
From: GUEST,Graham Moore

After seeing several old messages re. the musical Tolpuddle Man I wanted to put a few things right. These are the original words to the song Topuddle Man as written by me. Roy Bailey asked permission to adjust the third verse to include women.

Any interest in this topic - contact grahamoore@aol.com Tolpuddle Man (the musical) will be performed at the Tolpuddle Martyrs Festival, Topuddle Dorset on Saturday 14th July at 6.30pm. Tel.07966 546153 for info

A Tolpuddle Man
(Graham Moore)

Farewell to my family, it's now I must leave you
That far fatal shore in chains we shall see
Although we are taken, do not be mistaken
As brothers in union we shall be free

Chorus:
They can bring down our wages, starve all our children
In chains they can bind us, steal all our land
They can mock our religion, from our family divide us
But they can't break the oath of a Tolpuddle man

To those who rule us we are the Dissenters
Do your duty be thankful don't complain we are taught
For God in his wisdom divided his Kingdom
For few to have much while so many have nought^^

line breaks fixed by mudelf ;-)

Yo Graham, How ya doin'?

Bet you don't remember me as Liz the Squeak!! I was Liz Hodder then, long blonde hair, annoying laugh and heckler extraordinaire.....

I used to hang around with Alex Lyons a lot, at the Weymouth, Dorchester and Martinstown Folk clubs, for which I did the posters. How is life and what are you doing these days??

Liz TS - just to let you know that Sophie has done a Tolpuddle 'Wimmen' - called 'To Win the Day', performed for a area TUC convention at Croyde Bay, N. Devon a few months back to 'rapturous applause', but premiered (posh eh?) at Potterne FC, and more performances to come in the future.

Hello there,
We are an Australian folk singing duo who would love to include
Wrong Side of the World on a CD we intend to record in the near
future. We would appreciate any info you may have in relation to
copyright, permitted use, etc.

Thanking you in anticipation,

Lost'n'Found ~ If you look back at the thread, check out the entry by Guest Graham Moore - he's the author and has included an Email address - if you drop him a line, I'm sure he'd be happy to help, and tell him Liz says hello, but he won't remember me!

He's a lovely chap and well worth talking to.

Hi Toni and H, Jenny (ex Lemon Tart) here.

He is a nice chap! I met him at Tolpuddle a couple of years ago when I was touring with the Solidarity Choir. This festival was one of the really memorable highlights of our tour. I don't imagine he'll remember me either, although he might remember the choir.

Why don't you guys join the Mudcat? It's a pretty cool place!

Jenny

I would love to find out how to get hold of the Tolpuddle tape. Can any one tell me how?

I like the following song about the martyrs:

Song of Liberty

Written by George Loveless (One of the 5 Tolpuddle Martyrs) on a piece of paper immediately after he was sentenced to transportation, March 19, 1834. It was not new but he made it popular.

God is our guide, from field, from wave,
From plough, from anvil, and from loom;
We come our country's rights to save,
And speak a tyrant faction's doom:
We raise the watchword liberty:
We will, we will, we will be free!!!

God is our guide no sword we draw.
We kindle not wars battle fires:
By reason, union, justice, law,
We claim the birthright of our sires:
We raise the watchword liberty:
We will, we will, we will be free!!!

Further to wes.w's post of 13 June 2001, Sophie was asked to revive "To Win the Day" to mark the 150th anniversary of the TUC last year. Derek and I had the great privilege, along with Sophie, Lucy Findlay, Rod and Mary Harrington, Bob Axford and Martin Stephen, of performing it in the Dorchester Shire Hall, in the very courtroom where the six men were tried and sentenced to transportation. We managed another 3 performances in 2019 and are hoping to perform in the Methodist Chapel in Tolpuddle where the Lovelesses and their families worshipped, once the restoration of the chapel is completed, but at the moment our next scheduled performances are 2nd October at Chettle House in North Dorset and 24th October in Chaffcombe Village Hall in Somerset.
