If you are a writer, artist, or composer creating work and registering the copyright in the U.S., you may be concerned with the proposed 42% budget slash of the copyright office. This underfunding of the office would result in higher fees and fewer staff to process copyright applications. Here is a link with more information:

I thought that under the new copyright laws you did not have to register?

Mario, the law states that copyright ownership is vested in the hands of the creator of the work and that transfer of copyright must be done in writing, BUT if someone else files a copyright on your work before you do, it would be a legal problem to prove that it is yours. If you are going to publish, record, or perform you work, you should register the copyright. You can do this as collections, grouping the work together, which makes it less expensive than say, filing a separate copyright on each song.

Actually, if you want to prove copyright in your material there's no need to register it. Simply post it here, stating your copyright. ALL you need to disprove someone else's claim of copyright on your work is evidence, predating their claim, that it's yours!

Doesn't make the budget cut any more palitable, though!

G.

This in the face of continued congressional hearings over Internet copyright concerns?

This does not bode well... The time to lay off the excess store clerks is not just before the fall white sale...
