I'm a Yorkshire lad, from Nunthorpe - "as near to Middlesbrough as is respectable". I know they sodded about with boundaries and called it Teesside, then Cleveland but it's still Yorkshire for me. I left some time ago and am now what a good Boro person would call "Southern poofter" as I have lived in the leafy lanes of Hertfordshire for many a long year.

Middlesbrough - a great place to come from (not so good to back to though!).

Cheers, Terry

Dorrie, I'm in the former Peoples Republic of South Humberside, till the Tories changed it to North Lincolnshire and slashed the budget. The address sounds "real nice" but we ain't got any teachers, coppers or dustmen.

Work in Leeds, occassionally get over to the Jug at Chapel Haddlesey (South of Selby) on a Wednesday night (That's Bill Sables session, when he isn't touring!.

Where abouts are you?

I'm afraid I'm a terrible mixture. I've lived in South Yorkshire for years but I'm from South Wales, and I play Appalachian tunes on a banjo. There's a good Old Time scene in Yorkshire, with regular sessions in Sheffield and York, but they're not so keen here in Doncaster!
Cheers

I am a bloody American but feel I was born in the wrong country! :)

Just returned from a short trip to the UK (my fourth) and met some very cool musicians mostly of the pagan and folk variety. But I did not get to do as much music-oriented stuff as I would have liked on this trip (other agendas at work). As for Yorkshire, haven't made it there yet, but I will be attending a conference on sacred sites there about a year from now. Maybe we can hook up then.

all the best,
Peg

I've lived in Sheffield for nearly 28 years now, but I'll never sound like a Yorkshireman, though I understand the language and they don't bother to check my passport at the border anymore.  (I should explain that I still have my BBC-type accent with a hint of inherited Scots.)  Years ago, I worked at Stanley Tools as a labourer for a few months; "You're not from round here, are you?" they said.  "No." "Are you from Barnsley, then?"

I grew up in Hull, when it was still Yorkshire, and was at University in Leeds. I also lived in York for five years before moving about as far South as you can get without actually falling into the Channel, onto the Island of Portland.

I'll be going to Yorkshire October 17-29 for the Captain Cook week, spending a few days sightseeing in London before the fest. First trip to England. Hope to meet you Yorkshire catters there. I've got to get myself to the Jug Inn. I've been reading about the Jug's Mudcat gatherings, and it sounds like the place to be on a Wednesday night.

I was born in Hull, raised in Leeds and live in Israel. When I first heard a Watersons record- a good few years ago, it seemed like I must have been their neighbour in Hull, and heard them rehearsing in their front room. I'm sure it couldn't really have been so, though - it was just the so familiar accents.

Born in Pudsey, my birth certificate shows "Registration District of Wharfedale", but I've lived in Essex most of my life, and still do. I went back to Yorkshire to find my wife, who was born in Halifax - a good move, that, even 30 years on.

Could I be that rare animal, an Essex Dalesman?

You can take the man out of the county, but not the county out of the man.

Nice to see that Halifax keeps cropping up as I'm from Illingworth and used to visit the Bradshaw Tavern and Ivy House folk clubs. Now living in Dover - nearest folk club is the Star & Garter in Deal, a great little club. We can see the lights of Calais at night from the club window!! Miss Yorkshire though but have now got a taste for Shepherds Neame. Still, can't beat the old Timothy Taylor's!!

I've heard no mention of the Fleece at Addingham in many long years. I assume it's still there. In the 70s it was the place to be on Sunday nights, with the two Daves in residence - often easier to get in through the windows than the door.

Just to keep Halifax weaving through this thread, I was a reporter on the Evening Courier for a while in 1969-70, in the company of some truly extraordinary characters.

Another credential for taking part in this thread is that I went to school in Leeds, and have the distinction of getting expelled from Temple Moor.
