I have been a huge fan of Lenny Breau for many years. I just went to a posting having to do with his music and what I found there concerns me. Who are these ranters who constantly attemmpt to intimidate and control others. One of things I have liked about this site is that the people who post here have a wide variety of interests and tastes when it come to music. It seems we all love folk and traditional but we appreciate other types of music as well, then you get these nutters like "purity "and "pustule alert rabbiting on about things. This is the second posting I have checked out today and both have been spoiled by this kind of childishness . I guess that being anonymous is like having a license to be ignorant...too bad, isn't it?

Aldus, PLEASE ride out the storm, it's just part of the weather in Mudcatland... keep coming, just bring a raincoat... it ebbs and flows... it's not all nastiness.

Are you a member? Membership includes a personal page where I (and others I am sure) would reply at greater and possibly more helpful) length.

With remarkably little practice, I've found I can simply skip over that sort of contribution to humanity and continue to drink deeply from the fountain of friendly, helpful, music postings.

In other words, if you get you're knickers in a twist, they succeeded in pushing your buttons.

As far as I can tell, the behaviour we're talking about is essentially bullying. If you ever had siblings or schoolmates inclined to do this, do you recall how they first got meaner and then got bored when you didn't dignify the behaviour/comments with any response at all?

I won't be back to this thread because I suspect it will become a new source of oxygen for the flames. I hesitate even posting this because it will show activity on the thread, but alas I am human and thus prone to the temptation to offer what I think is advice and assistance.

CH

Praise, (or anyone)

Is there a place on Mudcat where Catters have little bios to read?? I thought that's what the personal page was but I see that it's not. Will have to figure the personal page out on my own! lol But I would love to be able to read a little about the people whose names are familiar to me. Just wondering...

And Aldus, please pay no attention to the childish stuff that appears here from time to time. Just pass it by--don't read it. It's worth side-stepping the muck in order to get to the good stuff--and there's really very little muck if Mudcat is judged on the whole. Stay, Aldus, we need you! :)

Beanster, have you visited bbc's resources? This can be accessed from the Quicklinks at the top of this page.

bbc's "Mudcat Profiles" is what you're after, Beanster. Though there aren't all that many Catters who have put their's up there so far. (At least you can guarantee there won't be any of the anonymous bullies who rightly irritated Aldus - whom I am training myself not to see on the threads.)

Aldus, I think it is precisely the variety of interests and tastes that bring out some of the differences of opinion. MOST of the folks here are respectful of these differences: You might love Band X while I detest them. But I wouldn't denigrate you for your musical taste. It gets a little stickier when the threads move into politics or social issues, such as gun control. Sometimes tempers flare, even among those who have communicated as allies in the Mudcat. Then, as you say, there are those who just seem to want to stir things up. You just have to learn to read past it. There is too much good, practical information and advice on the Mudcat to let all the Flamings become a big factor. I myself have been seriously insulted and told to F**K off, but you know, I don't even remember what it was about, I don't care, it didn't affect me very much. Some nameless Guest out of a world of billions. Do yourself a favor, and join up. Fairly painless, a few keyboard entries and no money involved. We could use another personality around here who doesn't think every thread is an occasion to insult everyone with differing opinions.

Heck Aldus, try not to let it bug you. A flamer told me if I had any self-respect, I wouldn't even BE here! This was after I asked how to find "fast forward" in RealAudio. They'll go away, trust me.

Rick

P.S. For what it's worth, 10 OTHER folks made very helpful suggestions! The odds are still good.

Thank you (or is it thank yous?), (lol) Jon and McGrath for your answers. I have never been there but will go now. After seeing all your names for the past (almost) month that I've been here, it will be interesting to get to know a little more about you all. Thanks again to you both, for the info.
