Joe's thread entry about "Dear Old Stan" brings back a late night trip to Maine back in the 70's. As I was driving through Massachusetts, I was listening to a folk show that had Stan as the guest. He sang "Flowers of Bermuda" and a couple of other songs. What made that night more memorable was the phrasing that Stan used, sort of like He was the captain (breath) of the Nightingale (breath), 21 days from Clyde in coal (breath).
Ever since then, I have wondered whether he was suffering from some problem that kept him from taking full breaths.
Does anyone know?

I believe he said in the record notes on Live, Between the Breaks; that he needed to make sure he left pauses in the lyrics where he could take a breath; that he hadn't put any in that song. That may be some of what you were hearing. I met him several times, but didn't know him well enough to know if he had any serious respiratory issues or not. There are probably others on the forum who might know.

I've looked at the liner notes on the vinyl Between The Breaks album, and there's nothing about pauses in the lyrics. In the Chris Gudgeon biography, it says:

Stan's advice, from *Songs from Fogarty's cove*, his official song book, is to "get a good breath at the end of each chorus, and a short one after the word coal. In the verses, you are on your own."

Have sung Flowers Of Bermuda I can tell you breath control is critical.
