Hi,

Not to be confused with the nursery rhyme of the same name.

Anyone know where i can pick up this up. It's supposed to be the same one as with Mrs. McGrath but the recorded version sound very different.

English band the Jones Boys have recorded my son John. It can be heard free at https://thejonesboys1.bandcamp.com/album/like-the-sun-a-glittering. They have also written about the song at https://thejonesboys.org/lyrics/my-son-john/. Definatly not a shanty!

"Then there's 'My Son Ted':"
We recorded it from Travellers as "My Son Tim" - It is a version of Mrs McGrath
The Irish aren't recognised as having shanties

The only song I know of that name is Tom Paxton's: very sad song from the Vietnam War era: describes Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder very accurately, but before the term was ever invented.

"Thanks, Jim."
You're welcome
My late friend used to tell the story of Henry Blake, the blind old Irish speaking storyteller, who lived at the very southern point of this County, Clare, where the River Shannon enters the sea.
Blake describe how he used to sit at the bottom of his garden listening to the sailors singing their shanties as they set off on their voyages - every language under the sun - a wonderfully evocative picture drawn by a blind ban.
I know that there were Irsi shanty-singers - Hugill mentioned them in his books as 'Liverpool-Irish', but nobody has ever been able to identify shanties that originated in Ireland
