Tonight, at the post-festival Session for the 8th Maleny Music Festival in Qld's Sunshine Coast Hinterland, I was reminded of this wonderful song by Paul Spencer, sung SO beautifully by our favourite Irish songbird, Jenny Fitzgibbon :

It is "I Hope You Like It (this song I have for you)"
and the lyrics and his rendition can be found on his post for April 28 2014 :
https://paul-spencer.net/category/songs/

Paul is based in Newcastle, NSW, Down Under.

His "Ode to Soil" song is another great favourite that Jenny does so well:

Cheers!

One of the finest ballads on the subject of love I have ever heard
The highlighted verse is, in my opinion, among the most beautiful declarations of love in the tradition and the final 'consummation' verse, exquisite
It's a fairly rare ballad - said to have been collected by Burns

3    Young Peggy
It isn't often that one finds a traditional ballad as lyrical and tender in feeling as this one. Here there is no blood, no cruelty, just two people in love and determined to consummate their love as quickly as possible.

Whaur hae ye been, Peggy,
Whaur hae ye been?
In the gairden ’mang the gillyflowers,
'Tween the hours of twelve and ane.

Ye werena yoursel', Peggy,
No' there your lane
Your faither saw ye in Jamie’s airms
’Tween the hours o' twelve and ane.

What though we were seen,. mither,
Though we were seen?
I would sleep in Jamie’s airms
Though his grave was growin’ green.

Your Jamie’s a rogue, Peggy,
Jamie’s a loon,
For the trystin' o’ oor ae   dochter
And her saw very young.

Jamie's no’ to blame, mither,
The blame lies on me,
For I would sleep in Jamie's airms
Though a’ the world should dee.

She’s gane tae her ain chaulmer,
Jamie was there,
I'm blithe to see ye, Jamie dear,
Though we maun meet nae mair.

We’ll tak' a pairtin' glass, Jamie,
Pour oot the wine -
And since we maun meet nae mair, my love,
We'll drink your health and mine.

Tak' me in your airms, laddie,
Here's kisses five,
And since we maun meet nae mair, my love
We’ll drink weel may we thrive.

Come to my airms, Peggy,
Close to my hairt,
And as lang's the sun hings in the lift
I swear we’ll never pairt.

Your faither keeps a crawin’ cock,
Divides nicht frae day,
And in the middlewatch o’ the nicht
In greenwood ye’ll meet me.

When mass was sung and bells were rung
And a’ bound for bed,
She’s kilted up her gay clothing,
Met Jamie in the wood.

'Twas early in the morning,
The clock chappit twa,
Her faither rose up in his bed,
Cryin’, "Peggy, she’s awa' '."

They've mounted their horses
And fast they did rin,
But lang ere they come to the top o' the hill
The lad and lass were yin.

Another vote for Love Minus Zero / No Limit; brilliant and uncliched words. And many early Tom Paxton songs for more straightforward approach!

From popular song The Way You Look Tonight and Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye, for when you're about to part. Though I'm sure I could come up with another dozen from the Great American Songbook.

From the tradition The Flower Of Magherally; the tune carries it through.

I have to say, I don't know most of these, but I would love to know why people like the songs they do
I like lots of love songs for different reasons - some personal, others universal
I find, for depth of human experience and for longevity, the traditional love songs are streets ahead of the rest
Not my favourite version, but RIGS O' RYE ALWAYS DOES IT FOR ME
'I would turn into a little pile of melted marshmallow at his feet.@
We must meet up sometime !!

Maggie and my brother Bob and I played John's Waltz To The Miller by Tony Trischka and Dede Wyland at my brother Gary's marriage to the lovely Linda a couple of decades ago.

Here in my dream you are wandering, wandering,
Gold skies above you the warm earth below,
You are rocked by the breezes, warmed by the sun,
Moving to rhythms and songs to be sung.

Now we are dancing around we will go.
Music plays sweetly your face is aglow
With your love for the music, your love to be free.
Dance on forever, but only with me.

Another I really like is a waltz written by my good friend and bandmate, the late Bernie Martin. It's called One Last Dance.

Well if I had just one last dance I think I'd dance with you.
I'd hold you close and we would twirl around this smokey room
We'd dance until the music stopped and the band all went away
And then I'd take you home that night and I would want to stay.

My favourite is one written in Mount Hope, Ontario by a school teacher named George Johnson, and since my wife's name is Maggie, it's especially dear to me (and her). The second verse hits home since we are now both senior citizens.

They say I am feeble with age Maggie
I step not as spritely as then
My face is a well a well written page Maggie
And time alone was the pen
They say we are aged and gray, Maggie,
As spray by the wild breakers flung
But to me you're as fair as you were Maggie
When you and I were young
