Completely free program that allows you to transcribe and playback medieval music.

The catch is it's in French, but it's pretty self explanatory to use with a bit of trial and error.

Just click the link that says

télécharger ici

to download.

My BT virus checker wasn't happy with that page so proceed with caution

The page says "Warning: count(): Parameter must be an array or an object that implements Countable in /home/vol11_6/hebergratuit.net/heber_19403081/htdocs/libraries/cms/application/cms.php on line 464"

Clear as mud!

I looked at it yesterday. It had some stuff at the top of the page (including the text of that message) and some more further down on the right. That can be a sign of a compromised site, into which code has been injected, and I expect that is what a site security checker might report. But in this case I think it's the result of errors in the site generation software.

After a little bit of research I believe the problem is this,

count() requires a countable variable or array as parameter, when it is initialised it has a default value of zero. However if not initialised it defaults to NULL, which seems to be an issue in PHP 7.2.

The site is made from open source freeware, so the writer of this freeware hasn't updated this software for changes in PHP 7.2 which came out a few years ago.

A couple of links about this program:
logiciels gratuits DNCF
That says the software was written in 2017, which seems to be when the website was set up. It might be an older version.

This is recent:
New software for square notation / neumes of St. Gallen and mensural notation

'scuse my ignorance but why a specific program for mediaeval music? Doesn't any playback and transcribing software do any sort of music?

If I understand it properly, the program is written to cope with the specific notation and symbols of the older music. It could, of course, be transcribed and re-done to conform to modern notation, but one would first need to be conversant with both types and would be slow.
(Since I don't read French and didn't translate the page, others may understand it all better.)

Mensural notation - wikipedia

The currently downloadable version of the program was uploaded in July - just after that thread on that Musicologie Médiévale forum. The author mentions recent changes he's made.

Phil Taylor's BarFly for the Mac is an ABC processor that can output Gregorian notation. I haven't done more with that feature than check that it's there. It's probably not as full-featured as this French system.

Dave

One use of the software is, if you have something like this,

https://files.list.co.uk/images/2012/11/09/perotin-alleluia-nativitas.jpg

You could learn to read it, good luck finding a text book, and rewrite it modern notation, or you could type it into this software and listen to it.

Or you could just typeset the "Rilum Sancte Annae" or "Diabolus ad Georgiae Venit" in neumes and look way cool playing from them in a session.

The author has posted a 'little' user guide to the Musicologie Médiévale forum I linked to earlier.

It's in French - I feel it ought to be in Latin.
