There are those who grab Brexit by the country. LOL

But seriously. I predicted a new puritanism was due. But I didn't see it would be this one. Just shows what is on your radar. But all the more welcome for its arrival.

As Churchill said Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely

But I see the pendulum swing past at times in the future. It is a two edged swordid!

I remember maybe 30 or more years ago that a politician opined "there is a case for a Whitehall Brothel" - and you can sort of see the logic.............

pardon my pedantry but whatever was said before Churchill, or even before Lord Acton, whether documented or ney:

The post reads As Churchill said and He did!

If we are being pedantic I think you will find my attribution was accurate enough, moreso than a poorly worded rejoinder.

Knowing the nature of these things the quotation was not worded "as coined by", quite consciously.

Mr Pedant

There are no longer such things as "sexual misdemeanor." While most, perhaps, do not meet the legal definition of a felony, they they are seen as such in the mind of the public in today's cultural climate. Sorry, but I don't find this thread as humorous as many of you do.

Now its Louis C K comedian.

To catch a predator is one thing. What if it becomes criminal* for any male to initiate sex? Will only women be allowed to initiate sex? Or should Puritanism apply to all?

I am stirring the pot but there are additional questions regarding the arena of misconduct. What are the new rules and is there a statute of limitations?

*Non violent 1st degree Male aggression

I've been waiting for this - a discussion of just how journalists decide to go with the stories of women who were assaulted by powerful men - when there were no charges filed or law enforcement agencies involved. There is a process that involves lots of interviews.

It isn't perfect - it sounds like Tavis Smiley got the raw end of things without knowing who is claiming abuse, and PBS, that should know better, isn't saying. There are discussions of who can address this, if Matt Damon is tone deaf (it comes down to the allusion to levels of misbehavior compared to cancer - it's all cancer, just different stages - he doesn't get that.)

There is a blowback against the resignation of Sen. Franken. Now that Moore lost, the Al resignation is misplaced.
Due process is also missing for Tavis.

Sexual McCarthyism?

Allow MeToo movement to use due process but block punishment by innuendo.

I used to teach the police to give all credence to women victims of rape and ignore any initial doubting and banish the notion she was asking for it.
I also included a more humane interview of victims using hypnotic techniques.

I never expected we would ignore due process.

I noticed long since that the law is a Shield for the victim. And Shields are heavy and pack a punch when wielded. Which is not lost on those with an agenda.

And due process is not necessarily needed to achieve an agenda.

But numbers do help to build a picture ............. sometimes.

The power mongers are still tripping over what is now in plain sight.

Now there's a public address by Tony Robbins
when he quoted men who will no longer hire

who happen to be attractive-looking women.

And the audience reared up and talked back. Good for them.

it has further emerged, as the Tony Robbins public speech is more closely recalled,
that Robbins was going on and on, in public and for the record,
about what a great fellow was Steve Wynn.

The same Steve Wynn who had to leave his company recently
while being charged with sexual harassment.

This is going to magnetize the whole incident
in Massachusetts,
where the Wynn corporation finally got the Commonwealth
to permit them to build a casino in the Greater Boston area.

I had a coworker who was out to get me for twenty years because I was promoted to a job that he thought he deserved to get. One thing he tried was speaking in ways that implied that I was gay. The first three times, he spoke so only I could hear. The fourth time, he said his thing in front of two other employees. I said, "OK, Rudy, this is the fourth time. I've been keeping notes, and now I've got witnesses." Never heard a peep out of him after that.

I have always been a staunch supporter of gay rights, so maybe that's what started him. His implication that I was gay put me between a rock and a hard place because I'd see nothing wrong if I were gay, but would it be construed as my being anti-gay if I complained against his remarks?

It was awkward, and I'm glad it happened only four times over a few months. I'm glad I was able to shut the bastard down so easily.

So, would that have been a "sexual misdemeanour" in the UK? In the US?

-Joe-

He sounds like a homophobic and bitter person Joe. You handled it well, but shouldn't have had to put up with that.
Here in UK it would have come under misconduct and harassment in the workplace. Also, homophobic remarks are regarded as a crime and the perpetrator can be prosecuted if, as you said, there are witnesses.
It was more than a 'misdemeanour' and not sexual since it involved words not sexual actions.

I just mentally composed about 3-4 comments on this subject.... all from different perspectives... and I couldn't see how to shorten any of them to make a clear, simple point. (the following, I assure you, IS an edited and shortened form of 60 years of reflection on it all. ?). I am unable right now to join those who can create clever, humorous comments. I'm not condemning jokes... I'm just overwhelmed by the number of recent cases involving celebrities whose behavior has made this such a public spectacle.

The problem is, human sexual attitudes and pressures... and resultant behaviors... are maddeningly complex.
'Most' issues are about male behavior, and there are biological explanations for the basic drives... but permissible actions are dependent on different cultural norms and laws that try to define and regulate them. But within any system, there are men who try to subjectively 'adapt' the rules... and women who either submit to pressure, or demand that men follow both thew law AND their personal wishes.... and then there are infinite gradations in personal attitudes in both men & women.

There is 'simple showing interest'...................... and forcible rape. And somewhere on that line are 'misdemeanors'. Al Franken and Placido Domingo are somewhere on that line, and perhaps most males have been, at a minimum, near the left end. Bill Cosby and Epstein... and Trump are right at the far right end.... but even that end has branches to refer to gross, criminal behavior of different sorts.

When accusations are made, some of them are just about unwanted, unpleasant advances, as in Franken and Domingo, and some are about obviously criminal behavior if substantiated. Some women are fairly adept at rejecting advances, and some, whether out of confusion, fear or calculated risk, don't bother.
To complicate it all further, when complaints are filed, some are treated seriously and some are not, depending on police, prosecutors, and eventually judges. There is NO doubt that some male prosecutors and judges have memories of their own transgressions of earlier times and make decisions on the subjective "they were asking for it" or "it's only natural urges" or "no lasting harm done" rationalizations.

What has happened recently is publicity in the media that both allows women to TELL their stories and provides support and confirmation OF the ubiquitous nature of such careless or dangerous male behavior.
Nothing will ever solve the root nature of sexual pressures and desires, but it seems the floodgates are open a bit to head society into a new admission that the issue cannot be swept under the rug any longer.

? leenia.. the thread was 'Sexual Misdemeanours'. I don't see any list about who is 'hated' the most. The 4 you refer to are of course societal problems of various sorts, but for actual mis-behaviors that need to be addressed by law and early training in values, I think that male attitudes toward women pretty well are the most common and cause the most anguish. In some ways, 'whores' are a by-product of male behavior... (and how do you distinguish between 'hos' and 'whores'?)

Yes, many men 'hate' women to cover up their own inability to attract women... which can lead to rape...etc.

I suppose some women harbor dislike for other women, but that's hard to quantify.

You'll have to clarify your point better for me to see where you are going...

My reaction to all the "me too" stuff was "this is NORMAL. Every woman has had those experiences, and we get past them."

And then, I thought "WHAT!!?? Why?"

It's another case of things that were considered unremarkable in the past, but then, the world changed. It WAS that way. Now it's not. And unfortunately, 1) some people can't adapt, and 2) some other people judge the past by what's right today.

At the bottom of it all is a failure to acknowledge and accept change.
