I realoise that Quincy Jones is not associated with folk music but I feel that it's worth nentioning the fact that his music is being celebrated as part of the BBC Proms tonight

Well, if your definition of African-American blues is broad enough to include rhythm and blues mainstream artists, then Quincy Jones has impeccable credentials, for he collaborated with musicians from Dinah Washington -- "Teach Me Tonight" -- to Ray Charles.
