So many Mudcatters and family members are ailing, grieving, going through difficult life transitions, that I thought it was time to revive the healing song circle. This circle is beyond the limits of space and time: post your songs, with links to lyrics or recordings if you can/wish. If you'd like to gather at a specific time, I offer to be singing at 4:00 pm Mudcat time on Sunday 3/3/13, and invite those of you who wish to join me.

For now I offer a song suggested by maeve on another thread:
(My corrections added)
Row on, row on another day
May shine with brighter light
Ply, ply the oars & pull away
There's dawn beyond the night.

Written for a preemie who only lived for two hours.

A         D               A
Sleep softly my pretty one
             E7
Sleep softly my darling
          A                                     E7
You promised a happiness that only you could bring
          D                   A
You came for a moment
       E7                     A
and then you were gone
E7                            A          E7 A
Faded away like a snowflake in spring
            D                A
Sleep softly my pretty one
                   E7   A
Sleep softly my love

------------------------------------
Written for Lou.

Your life's hard work is over
all the storms have left the sky
the sun sets in the mountains
and its time to say goodbye

you have been my own true lover
the time has come I know
you'll be part of me forever
though I have to let you go

I'll be singing then.

WHAT YOU GIVE ME
(copyright 1988/ Laura G. Lindgren)

To Walk in your forest, To graze in your pastures, To fly in your
   starry black night
Such is the garden, Such the devotion
Such is the fountain of love in my heart

To flow in your river, To gaze at your colours, To sway in your
    treetops so high
Such is the garden, Such the devotion
Such is the fountain of love in my heart

1st bridge
What you give me is a doorway to God, let us bathe in the Now
Never grasping at the days ahead
Just a patience of the heart in the pastures of truth
And love, trembling love.

To let out your kite string, to feel your dark ocean, to play in the
    breakers at dawn
Such is the garden, Such the devotion
Such is the fountain of love in my heart

To shatter on your hard floor, to dance in your cobwebs, to sing the
    song of our death
Such is the garden, Such the devotion
Such is the fountain of love in my heart

2nd bridge
You are teaching me songs that I never dreamed of.
Opening worlds that I never hoped for
I'm breathing my breath, I'm dying my death
Sing that the world doesn't end.

To read your sad story, to bask in your glory, to sit in the presence
    of God
Such is the garden, Such the devotion
Such is the fountain of love in my heart

To know beyond knowing in the patience of being
beyond thought, beyond wanting to know
Such is the garden, Such the devotion
Such is the fountain of love in my heart

Here are a round and then a chant I learned from an out of print cassette put out by Pomegranate Rose many, many moons ago.

The Roots of My Heart (round)

The roots of my heart go deep underground
And entwine with the roots of your heart.
The roots of my heart go deep underground
And entwine with the roots of your heart.

I will love you deep in my heart.
I will love you deep in my heart.

We Have All That We Need. (chant)

We have all that we need
Full blessed children of space
Light shines pure on our faces
Bringing love, illumination, peace.

And one more. by Bruce Cockburn.   I like this as either a round or with rich harmonies added a layer at a time with each repetition.

For the Birds

Hmmmm, every day! Flashes like a stray bluejay.
Hmmmm, golden crown upon each one! Like an eagle seen against the sun.

Not to worry, ChanteyLass. About three years ago I began to lose my singing voice and don't even sing out loud in the shower anymore. But the heart still sings, and that is where music-and healing-resides.

I think I'll sing Prayer, by Josh Bogin. Click the link to see the Navajo heritage of this song.

PRAYER
(Josh Bogin)

Curtain of daybreak, it is hanging;
The wind, it whispers a morning praise;
Before the sky you will find me standing;
Let me live in this holy place.

CHORUS
All before me peaceful,
All behind me peaceful,
Under me peaceful,
Over me peaceful,
All around me peaceful -
All around me peaceful.

In the house of freedom, there I'll wander;
In the house of life shall I pass my days;
In old age traveling, there I'll wander;
Walk with me in this holy place.
CHORUS

Homeward now down this road I'll wander,
Where my soul's long lines are deeply traced;
Homeward now shall I make my journey,
Lo, yonder this holy place.
CHORUS

One of the secondary benefits of this thread is that later, when the time is right, I'll be collecting a lot of songs from you all!

My dear husband reminds me that we are having some people over for lunch at noon today, who have a tendency to stay and stay. I will do my best to be on line at 4:00 pm, but if I am not physically here, I will be emotionally here.

And since time and space are relative, it's all one, anyway.

I admit I have this skewed view of things but ya' know, a lot of songs may have an intended meaning by the songwrter but something different to all of us. So if I am a bit far afield from the truth of the songwriter (and all great songs are truth at their heart), the "truth" it gives to me may not be the same. That said..........

Even a Gray Day

Tom Paxton

Even a gray day,
with a cold wind,
Train late again
Even a gray day,
is a good day now.

Even a black night,
with a hard rain,
With plans down a drain,
Even a black night,
is a good night now.

Fresh out of answers, I threw in my hand
Stood with my back to the wall
But thanks to your kindness that I understand
That it could have been no life at all

Now even a hard time,
with a thin shoe,
And my bills coming due,
Even a hard time,
is a good time now.

Yes even a weekend,
in a strange town,
And the snow comin' down,
Yes even a weekend,
is a good friend now.

Fresh out of answers, I threw in my hand.
Stood with my back to the wall.
But thanks to your kindness that I understand,
That it could have been no life at all

Now even a gray day,
with a cold wind,
My train late again,
Even a gray day,
is a good day now.
Even a gray day,
is a good day now.

GUEST, I don't know who you are, but you're a mind reader! Welcome, you and Janie and all who stop by. GUEST's song is one of my favorite openers!

We are on "relativity time" so it doesn't matter where you are or when you arrive. Pull up a chair and sing along!

Great Allison and all!! Let's get this one in which fits in most song circles and certainly here. Also makes me think of Sandy and Caroline........."Singer's Request"

Dark the night and long til day
Do not bid us further stray
Dark the night and long til day
Do not bid us further stray.

Now the sun it doth decline
Pour the beer and pour the wine,
We can lead your thoughts astray
From the world or from the day

Dark the night and long til day
Do not bid us further stray
Dark the night and long til day
Do not bid us further stray.

    We bring songs of history,
    Love and war and mystery
We can lead you from despair
Or can cheer the darkening air

Dark the night and long til day
Do not bid us further stray
Dark the night and long til day
Do not bid us further stray.

You can choose to pass us by
With a cruel or scornful eye
We will see the ending through,
Then we'll turn and say to you...

Dark the night and long til day
Do not bid us further stray
Dark the night and long til day
Do not bid us further stray.

I'd thought I'd post this over on this thread for Nigel.....And btw, Nigel, you can come along and post another. This was a good selection which fits the whole idea of this group. One of Carole King's very best.....and she had some great ones!

You've Got A Friend

Carole King

When you're down and troubled
And you need some loving care
And nothing, nothing is going right
Close your eyes and think of me
And soon I will be there
To brighten up even your darkest night

You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I'll come running to see you again
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you have to do is call
And I'll be there
You've got a friend

If the sky above you
Grows dark and full of clouds
And that old north wind begins to blow
Keep your head together
And call my name out loud
Soon you'll hear me knocking at your door

You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I'll come running to see you
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you have to do is call
And I'll be there

Ain't it good to know that you've got a friend
When people can be so cold
They'll hurt you, and desert you
And take your soul if you let them
Oh, but don't you let them

You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I'll come running to see you again
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you have to do is call
And I'll be there
You've got a friend

Great songs here. I blew it at 4, so I'm joining very late. I left the house at 3 and went to the drugstore. I should have been home by 4, but there was a much longer wait time than I expected. It was after 5 when I got home, I needed to cook and eat (diabetic, though pretty stable, but meals should be on time) and then I wanted to find a song . . . . Anyway, I'm here now. I've sung the songs I know on this thread and the ones in recent posts on Nigel's thread. Mine is the English words to Lorre Wyatt's Somos el Barco. (Did someone post it earlier on Nigel's thread? If so, it must have stuck in my mind.)

Chorus: We are the boat: we are the sea.
I sail in you; you sail in me.

Verses: The stream sings it to the river; the river sings it to the sea
The sea sings it to the boat that carries you and me.

Now the boat we are sailing in was built by many hands
And the sea we are sailing on, it touches many sands

Oh the voyage has been long and hard, and yet we're sailing still
With a song to help us pull together if we only will.

So with our hopes we raise the sails to face the winds once more
And with our hearts we chart the waters never sailed before.

It's always 4:00 somewhere! Let the songs roll on! Somos el Barco is perfect!

Here's my chorus singing "The Storm is Passing Over" by Charles Tindley:
The Storm is Passing Over

Courage my soul, and let us journey on
Though the night is dark, and I am far from home
Thanks be to God, the morning light appears
The storm is passing over,
The storm is passing over,
The storm is passing over, Halleluia.
Halleluia, Halleluia, Halleluia,
The storm is passing over,
The storm is passing over,
The storm is passing over, Halleluia.

Thunder rolling, and billows shake the ground,
See the lightning flashing, and dark clouds all around
Jesus walks the seas, and calms the angry waves.
The storm is passing over...

My roots go down, down into the earth
