pauline Phillips, the "Abby" in "Dear Abby" has moved on so to speak. I used to enjoy her stuff sometimes but when John Prine wrote that brilliant song, I enjoyed it even more.

Dear Abby from a younger John Prine

Thanks for the advice Fair Lady........

Spaw

"You are what you are and you ain't what you ain't."

I read many of her columns when I was young, middl/, hell, most my life. Neat gal. Leaves a hole in the world of common sense. RIP

I'd forgotten that Ms. Phillips (Dear Abby) was still alive. That's because she retired from the column years ago and her sister, known as "Ann Landers," did pass away quite some time back.

Glad you were able to stick around for 94 years, "Abby," and leave us with some memorable column quips.

Her sister died in 2002.

Oops - typo - "Ann Landers"...

"So I wrote to Aunt Landers and Dear Abby too,
And asked their advice as to what I should do,
And they said that everything that reminds me of you
Would all have to go..."

I got hooked on Dear Abby at the age of 12 when I read a letter requesting advice on asking a regular member of a billiards league to refrain from placing her false teeth (complete set, upper and lower) on the side cushion for luck. She always gave common-sense advice that seemed obvious only until one realized that the courage, humility and honesty required by the common-sense approach are always in short supply.

Sad news!

Chongo Chimp has announced that he may step forward to fill the gap left by the death of Dear Abby and her sister, starting his own advice column "Dear Chongo" in newspapers and internet blogs across the world. He figures he can make good money that way, as well as giving people the moral guidance and emotional support they need to get them through each day.

I read this with great sorrow, which was worsened when my almost 18-yo hadn't heard of her OR Ann Landers. Man. Another era passes.

I remember reading about the attempts made to fool these advice columnists. College students (fraternity houses seemed to be mentioned most often) would compose letters and send them in - she was pretty good at busting chops when she thought that was the case but decided to print them anyway.

Thanks for the song link, Pat.

She had a sense of wit and humour, too.

Condolences to all her love ones. And Spaw, what a great song by our best John Prine.
