Today is the first anniversary of getting out of the nursing home and starting to rebuild life in this house around wellness, now that thyroid treatment has made such a difference. I'm deeply grateful for all the support that helped me get as far as I have; I still have a ways to go.

Since then, tho, we have found and bought a vacation cottage in the Ohio town where we've vacayed every year since... I dunno, a LONG time. The closing was last week. I bug out with a load of furniture Jan. 3.

I'm madly (and thoughtfully) packing. Doing this the week of Christmas, since we are a clergy couple, is... interesting. (Our wedding was also in what is Hardi's busiest season, so it IS an anniversary project....) We have an open cargo trailer that I will tow down-- hoping we get no precip or snow if we must, and NO RAIN.

A waking insight today was: if I pack things in canvas trunks we already HAVE, the contents will stay DRY (enough) on the open trailer if I FIRST put the contents into re-usable TRASH bags of which we have more than enough!!! I have 3 right off the bat: a huge trunk-shaped item I used to haul pillows in, at my sickest; 2 wedge-shaped, more structured items that zip and can be laid down flat or stood up. The trunk-shaped one can sit on top of furniture. The other two can stand up along the sides to help brace other items.

There is one more piece I may use also, if I can clear a path to it for the MenzCrew: a wide, resin, garbage-can "garage" that could sit at the tongue end, with bagged linens inside of it-- easily fetched out without even taking the thing off the trailer-- it could just stay there till the next trip. (Tall #1 son is meeting me at the cottage to help.)

That next trip will be Hardi and I together in February-- he says flying down to drive back with me, this trip, will not work. That's OK-- a Valentine Vacay Week works!!!

Holiday elf tasks are actually done TOO (I cannot believe it), in time for Xmas Eve. Also cannot believe how far I have come since discharge from the nursing home last Xmas Eve. I'm planning to attend at least one service tonight, maybe both.

Love,

~Susan

CH,

Well, gosh-- it's my anniversary, isn't it? What a dear you are for asking!!!

I had a great co-counseling session (www.rc.org) Monday AM that blew out a lot of the anger, and all week I have been cleaning like a madwoman-- MIL is here for my annual Fall Cleaning. Most years I clean and then fall back into not cleaning. This year I think I have enogh of a metabolism to keep it up, and to keep the scar adhesions from continuing to grow I need to walk. A lot. Like behind a vacuum cleaner and a dusting rag.

All in all, it's good to be "this side of the dirt." Hardi has a surprise for me for tomorrow-- I think it's being spoiled at a spa-- in honor of the event.

Well I missed this whole thread...what year!

If it helps any, paraphrased here is how I had post-op abdominal pain explained to me:
The nerve supply in the abdomen exists mainly to support digestion, elimination, and the lives of the organs that carry out these functions. Those nerves are pisspoor at accurate transmission of pain. Same in the thorax. That's why people feel like they have indigestion when it's a heart attack, or nausea when the abs are just exhausted from to many sit-ups, or get sharp, debilitating pain ( or roving aches or u-name-it) during healing.

I can't vouch for its accuracy, just that it's how an MD explained it to me.

More physical activity improves the messaging (decreases foolish signals) but it'll likely be months to years until one day you realize you haven't had this or that weird pain for the longest time.

Happily, bad anniversaries do pass. It's good to indulge your emotions a fair bit for the first one--part of processing it all.

Many hugs!

The traumatic surgery/complications' memories and phantom, amputee-like sensations are coming to the surface now as the first anniversary approaches. While these are pesky in realtime, they are also the bodymind signal that a significant state of healing has actually occurred. I am told I should plan for two years-plus to feel "well." I do feel/function better in many respects but am trying to be realistic as Year Two begins...

The hospital's first re-submitted bill seems not to have arrived at Blue Cross so they had to submit it again-- which re-sets the appeals clock (that's good).

Answering a question asked upthread, in the US one can get their own Ashley or Claudia via http://www.healthproponent.com/... if one finds that the purchaser of their insurance group's plan has not contracted with Health Advocate or their health system has no Health Navigator.

Here is Miss Claudia's report on her plan to chop out the first $30,000 of that $51K bill:

I have some good news. I called [the hospital and spoke with Dxxx, the supervisor of Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) insurance for the facility. I asked for a corrected bill reflecting that the covered surgery was performed on 9/13/2012 (not 9/14 as billed), and admission to the facility was on the same day. Dxxx told me that this corrected bill is already 'in the works' and will be filed with BCBS. I asked when I could follow up regarding the payment of the claim. She expected this payment to be finalized around mid March.

Whap! Slash! ZAP!

:~) I have got to get this boxed up crap out of my living room. It is boxed but the thing needs to go to another room out of my sight! Thing is I am not sure where I want it! Oh I know-- the ARCHIVE storage in the way-way-wayback part of the house! LOL, I was gonna put it in my office that I am already feeling like not going into! OK I will ask Hardi to carry it out there for us-- it's too heavy now for me!

Note to self: As advised by an experienced friend, it is all sorted by provider and then by date within those groupings. I noted which ones were originals and which ones copies, and whether I had annotated any of them or left them un-noted/unread. ALso the files that go with them on my LR computer were specified right on the records, in case Hardi needs to know where to look for detailed notes.

Yet to do-- get a printer cartridge and print those computer files, plus relevant emails, and box them into all this as well. Best case-- I never need all of this paper. Worst case-- it is in a handy form to tote off to a lawyer. In between-- CLAUDIA.

Although my REASON for agreeing to this surgery was for the LIFE-saving benefits-- some of which I have been enjoying despite complications-- it is also OK to ENJOY some side benefits I have begun to appreciate, as I get my strength back.

Some of those benefits are reflected in an update of a montage previously linked upthread:

2012-13 Ramp and "Fashion" Forays

A lot more fun in my day, today, than filing the damn medical records we may need to pull from, for the appeal!

Today the appeal specialist (Miss Claudia) at Health Advocate introduced herself. She has begun the review of my medical records.

I spent way too long yesterday going over the bulk of the records with a fine-tooth comb to spot items that show the medical necessity of my having been in the hospital, which is what the appeal is about. I got through about 80 of the 100+ pages; Ashley had sent them to me in PDF form so I could look in one screen and make notes in a WordPad file. When I can stomach those last pages I will group the types of info into a chart to discussion with Claudia.

We also need to get a letter from the referring doc outlining what he had told me about the expected aftercare needs; I am mulling how to draft that request since he will probably write the letter from whatever I draft for him from my recollections of that conversation before the surgery.

Uck uck, uck!

The hospital records we needed for the appeal have arrived. We send them off to Ashley Monday (keeping a copy at home as well).

I anticipate one last home health nursing visit next week to discharge me from home health.... we are down to a dressing I can DO. I took myself off the PT schedule yesterday.

Now comes the hard part-- life with no external structure on TIME. I already blew it, too-- laundry all over the place, sore from not doing my stretches, and forgot all about eating breakfast this AM till 11:45! Back to the cellphone alarms for key structure! I am heading out for a ramp walk!

Medical records have begun to arrive for the appeal. They include some insulting ass-covering efforts by the surgeon, which I cheerfully found and annotated in my second look thru them..... wearing a cute pink turtleneck I can now wear. As revenge.

Tonight a phone conference with number one son. Monday we mail what we have to Ms. Ashley, and we are sure she will agree that we also need the nursing notes and list of meds given.... I am gonna need a lot more retail therapy!

One recent morning while enjoying my sunny Sick Bay I happened to notice a flash of red in the bushes along the creek, looking out the east window which, most winters, has been kept covered. We need to keep the heat loss as low as possible. (Being on house arrest for HHS, this year we splurge on keeping the indoors as bright as possible.)

Of course it was a cardinal, lurking among reddish-brown herbiage still clinging to the bushes. And a lovely, sunny meditation it was, enjoying his presence. Oh LOOK, there are TWO.... two bright red males.... and a THIRD!?!?!?! I got up and put out some cereal for them, scattered over the ramp's railing that faces the bushes. (I didn't have anything else they might like.)

And then, as they say in poker, I went "all in": I hied myself hence to Amazon. Invested about $40 bucks in bird feeders I can mount on the ramp's posts, and a birdbath too.

Cuz when it comes to birdehs, one is never enough.

In early spring we are always buzzed by hummingbirds that seldom stay the summer. By golly I will be ready for them this year, and THIS year when all that snow melts, I'll be able to get down onto that porch and set a spell among the birdehs! Bird feeders and colorful hanging pots and..... zero grav recliners... camp chairs.... pickin'.....

The mind must know I am going to survive this surgery and complications. It has gone off without me, planning for a few more years in this ole house. Everything portable to go to our retirement digs a few more years down the road.... yep..... uh huh, I see it now...

Blessed sleep, in your OWN bed- there is nothing like it!

Well.... I did not actually sleep deeply, and I felt it the next day: insufficient energy.

I have not been totally accurate in posting about the scar tissue that is going to be problematic for several more months. There are bands of it (along lines of incisions), and big lumps of it (where abscesses/gappy pockets were).

It variously feels like overly-tight seatbelts I cannot take off, barbed wired lacing, a hot iron bar running me through, a cinderblock between belly and bed or hip and bed.....

Then there are the miscellaneous sharp pains from time to time in places where they have not been, that may be from benign causes (increased activity for example) or from new complications brewing.... as the day goes on these daily "adventures" become quite wearing and I get pretty.... well, "crabby" is an understatement... sometimes walking helps.... sometimes I just do not have the energy left for that...

This is a daily, ongoing part of healing from this surgery and from the way the damn doctor messed me up.

It IS good for my prayer life though. :~) And hopefully y'all have been and will keep praying for this to soften, strengthen, and heal. And/or that I will learn "saintly" cheeerfulness-- I am working on that too.

It's very different to what I understand about US health system. Do other churches & compassionate organisations offer similar health systems?

Well, let's see. I can really only speak to my own experience, but I suspect the answer as far as other denominations would be yes.

Here is an example from our housefire in 2000. The Church Insurance Group would gladly have hired a lawyoo to sue the landlord, till I explained that he had become a friend, treated us well, and we had employed one another's young men for their first jobs outside their own families-- that we did not want to sue and we fir sure did not want our happy, leaseless (handshake) agreement threatened with hard feelings. (And we have been here now since '94.)

So the CIG paid our claim without suing him. The landlord's insurance did turn around and sue us and our insurance, because that is what secular, profit-driven entities do. But the whole time they were doing this, our landlord had no idea it was being done in their name. We just never brought it up, even as weekly mail came and went all about the gory details. But when the landlord's family found out (around final settlement time), were they mad. "Those 'tenants' are our dear friends! Stop this suit at once! You cannot do this in our name!"

Hardi had buried their patriarch, Walter.... because they asked him to, and because Walter had just loved sitting in our driveway watching our ducks. (There is a MudThread about that one.)

It's very different to what I understand about US health system. Do other churches & compassionate organisations offer similar health systems?

Here in the land of Oz we have universal health care - Medicare is government run & offers hospital & medical care, tho many folks also have private health cover to (help) cover the gap between Medicare rebate & fees charged, & to pay for/contribute to non-Medicare services. Medicare Australia explained on Wikipedia

Patients can still have a large out-of-pocket expenses.

SRS, wow!

She has had an attorney taking care of this stuff. Hang in there, don't let those companies off the hook.

This is exactly what Ashley does, under the umbrella of our very supportive diocesan health insurance plan. Our denom funds insurance thru a compassionate group of companies which are headed and often staffed by clergy. In managed care, PT (for example) is, industry-wide, "evidence based." Our insurance is purchased thru a "compassion-based" system, which includes checks and balances that come into play when one is SO "under water" on health expenses that were fairly incurred that one needs access to additional resources. In our case one of these resources is Ashley.

ANY member of our insurance group has access to the Health Advocate network of experienced expediters. We were additionally blessed to be assigned to a senior member of the expediting group who can do all this-- without violating a Christian preference not to bring suit the way so much of our culture is prone to do.

Going to court is a last, last, LAST recourse, for us-- and only after all other means have had time to play out in honest mediation.

It is a very different way to do business. For example, the PT person at the Home, when she heard about the notion of "compassion-based" services, had a real hard time even seeing that there is another way out there, which is working well for many people. Her "evidence-based" assessments of my progress, for example, will help me make a case to a donor organization that compassionately assists when medical expenses go beyond the red zone-- while the PT's Medicare-mindset led her to think that "no" (i.e. insurance will not cover more PT) really meant "never" (i.e. no other funds are even out there). That org may be able to help when I get past HHS PT and onto outpatient PT-- our insurance covers some of the cost, but significant co-pays would preclude my doing outpatient PT at all without some help.

Again, it is a very different way to do business. We do our part by being wise stewards of our income, and that includes significant participation in annual parochial pledge and capital programs... as well as personal volunteer service and financial assistance to people in the community; it all usually comes out OK, over time.

My friend who was struck by a motorist in a parking lot last January has recovered but it took a long time - 2 weeks in the ICU, 3 1/2 months in various rehab facilities, stepping down in complexity as needed and as insurance dictated. In order to pay her hospital bills she had to sue - the driver of the car, and she had to sue insurance companies, including the auto folks since she was hit in the parking lot (she had two auto insurance policies in effect - one was supposed to have been closed a few months before the accident but family discovered the company was still pulling a policy payment from her checking account every month, so that company was on the hook though they tried to back out of the policy when they realized what was happening). We're coming up on a year on January 12, and some of this is still unfolding. She has had an attorney taking care of this stuff. Hang in there, don't let those companies off the hook.

I do not know yet when the appeal will be filed; first I have to gather a few boxes of medical records and the referring doc will order those for us next week. Ashley will go thru all this and then actually create the appeal on our behalf-- thus providing us a kollidge lesson in insurance industry priorities!

I fully expect the insurance company to turn around and sue the surgeon to recover expenses they have paid out on my behalf. Some people have opined that I should consider suing him, but as long as I continue to gain strength and avoid further complications, we will not even need to go there. I just want to be WELL and get on with my life. I am quite sure that he will reap what he has sowed, all by himself.
