Such a shame about your sister and the mess that she has left for her brothers to clean up after her, Rap. But dealing with the mess now means that those things can be put in their place once and for all. Hoping that your family makes decent progress with that sad task before you and your wife return home.

Pat is black and blue, and has been in pain from the joint bruises, fro a week now. We fly home on Wednesday next and she will go see the our doctor(s) there, complete with a video of the x-rays and CT scans and all.

Well, this has been an exciting day! We were going to go to my brother's place a couple of hours driving away to visit and work over some of the problems my sister has left.

So we had lunch and on the way back to the car -- Pat took a tumble. A ride in an ambulance ensued, as did four and half hours in the emergency room.

Dislocated left index finger and a banged up knee. The dislocation has been reduced and she's sitting across the room with ice on her knee.

I do hope that this is a foreshadowing of a really good year. You know, get the bad out of the way early....

Off tomorrow at 0430 MST for the bus to take us to the plane to take us to Denver to catch the plane for St. Louis where we'll overnight before picking up the car to take us to Quincy for the funeral and things. We're staying here, in a "suite" of 450 square feet. That's almost half as big as our first house! Cost: USD 70 to USD 90 per night.

I spare a moment for communion of spirit with those whose feelings are bruised and whose bodies need more time to recover, because the holidays can be a bruising and battering occasion, and I know whereof I speak.

Looking at the obit notice for Rapparee's sister, is to observe how grief sometimes is grief squared:
one power of grief for the actual passing on;
and grief to the second power, over the person who you remember from many years before, who has been someone different-looking for a long time. Especially so, if you did what could be done to support some form of recovery, and the person wasn't having it.

That one is going to smart deep down.
Until it is time for you to travel back for the observances, Rap and better half, eat and sleep well, and take good care of yourselves, the better to be present for the other grieving survivors where you are bound. Holding you and your grief over my heart.

I read the posts, and I sort of sound along with the good and the bad, like a resonance string. I guess I wish people for the continuation of the good times, where appropriate, and the change of fortunes where things aren't going so well; calmer times for those who lost kin and/or loved ones. The holiday for the Nativity always leaves me with mixed feelings to start with. Stuck somewhere between my heart and my gut feelings, is this unfortunate dread: when everyone else rejoices in the Nativity of the infant, I am thinking, Ye gods, what a hard road that little boy has to travel. I can't get "Let this cup pass from me" out of my mind for some strange reason.

So, although there is grief and loss when someone passes on, -- depending on whether the passing is expected, or a complete shock -- it consoles me to consider that someone has been released from suffering.
