At getaway , the campers concert is ALWAYS oversubscribed , so they have a 'pre-booked' sytem , if you dont get your name in early then you dont get a spot ! No reason \i can see to use the same thing ar W H F F , make the list available Saturday morning and off we go !

Yes, Richard. In fact, Rob and I arrived there quite early, and if that system had been in place, we probably would have got on. I agree it would have been a shame if we had not been treated to that wonderful Hallelujah chorus. I used to sing in a church choir many moons ago and I could really appreciate it :) I won't tell you what mine was, but it did involve switching around to different voices, and was totally unrehearsed and silly. Maybe next year ;)

A valid point. I having known our Guru was to do the eye watering with laughter one. I did feel twitchy in case she was missed on the over run on time.
Such a shame if those with a contributions are left out though.

Name on volanteer sing list would be fine so you can prepare for your turn then and those who arrive first get their turn

Hi Jenny, have taken that onboard, with a festival of over 100 fine singers we can't get you all on. Will look at ways of improving the odds as "What the folk" appears to be a fav. event for many. Same as last year for me, didn't even have time to set foot in the venue whilst it was on.
Regards Skipy

Glad to hear it. It was a lot of fun! I was wondering if I could make a suggestion though about 'What the folk'? It was kinda disappointing if you had something prepared and had to wait to see if you would be picked, and then were not picked.

It is obviously very popular, so I was thinking of the way they run 'Gloom Doom and Despondency' at Sidmouth. People put their names down beforehand, as for a blackboard concert, and then you know if you are going to get a turn, rather than having to wait and wonder. I think even if we had KNOWN we weren't going to get a turn, we still would have stayed to enjoy it anyway, but the uncertainty would have been taken out, making it more enjoyable. Just something to consider for next year......

Next year we hope to have more opportunities to participate in general.

Aha, Fyldeplayer - didn't click who you were but at least I know we were in the same room. The Hallelujah Chorus was my fault I'm afraid. I'd never imagined that it would work at a Folk Festival *grin*

Thanks to everyone ay WHFF. you will be pleased to know my cats hadn't starved and the ones locked out were very miffed. The key had been locked in the kitchen but all is now sorted. I've now bought an outside key safe so it doesn't happen again!

Skipy - I think the date thing is a blip from when the Cat was down...

It seems horribly likely that WHFF will clash with Moira next year, as well as with the start of Whitby, because there will only be a one week gap between the end of Sidmouth and the start of Whitby (only 4 Mondays in August 2012). We'll probably be arriving late at Whitby next year....

Was this the best yet?
Particularly the Sat evening concert.
All enjoyable, but a special mention to "The Morning After", who were great all weekend.
Thanks to Tony and Pearl and Kitty and Derek for hosting the singarounds, and to Dave and Kate for another great festival, 25 years, but not, I believe, No 25. A good excuse for another anniversary soon!

The Saturday afternoon tune session was pretty good, what with three Maccann duet concertinas in one session (not to mention two nyckelharpas and all the usual stuff).

As always, a thoroughly enjoyable festival. Just a shame you can't be in all places at once.

What a wonderful weekend! As good as any of the previous 24; even Magic got to meet a couple of other greyhounds.
Fabulous concert on Saturday night and brilliant sing-a-rounds but, as ever, the best thing with 'Grove' is catching up with so many old friends.
Looking forward to number 26!

JennyO I can recommend if available the Old Farm House - you can see up the it up hill from the festival bustop (thatched cottage) near the bridge, great location, good food and totally festival people staying. Only 10 mins from the front.

This reminds me of a comment made by the owner of the B&B we stayed at for Sidmouth - it was a manor house well out of Sidmouth (it was all we could get by the time we booked). We got the distinct impression that he wasn't very happy having festival goers staying there.

He knew it was what we were there for, but that didn't stop him doing a spiel about how genteel Sidmouth is and how he thought it was spoilt by those ruffians who insisted on having a folk festival there. He also expected us to pay up front when we arrived, and when we asked if it would be possible to get a key in case we came back late, he said "Absolutely not. This is a 2 million pound manor house. I don't give out keys." We had to get back soon after midnight each night, otherwise we would have been locked out. One day when we went down for breakfast at 8am because Rob had a 9am workshop, he looked very put out and said he wasn't ready yet. Needless to say, we'll plan ahead a bit earlier and go somewhere else next year, where we won't be regarded with such suspicion and distain. He can give our room to someone more 'genteel' ;)

Hi Skipy

The normal CGDA tuning is very "open" and it gives the instrument unusual voicings from both open and closed chords. The fifths tuning also makes for easy moveable chord shapes. The instrument is equally well suited to both rhythm and lead playing.

Hope that helps. Plenty of string players around at W/E to assist.

Perhaps nude morris dancing as forfeit, nah that would be silly!
