(as I was asked to start a thread for this)

I was bored the other day..so started trying to think of 10 commandments for mudcat discussions. Number one being:

Thou shalt not utter the word 'traditional'

Anyone else got suggestions for the other 9?
Guests may start music threads, but we prefer that you sign up. I'll let this one go because it's related to music, but generally guests are not allowed to start threads in the non-music section because we had too much trouble with threads started by people hiding behind anonymity.

Folk's Ten commandments

1. Thou shalt not try to define 'trad', ask what 'trad' means at any time nor use the word

'trad' in anger
2. Thou shalt not not do any of the above by changing 'trad' to 'folk'
3. Thou shalt not take the name of Folk in vain nor feed any trolls
4. Thou shalt not forget that you too were once a learner
5. Thou shalt honour thy musical instrument
6. Thou shalt not covet thy fellow singer's instrument nor their talents
7. Thou shalt not kill a song
8. Thou shalt not try and show too much open mindedness for fear of being called 'liberal'
9. Thou shalt not dare use a cribsheet, capo or bodhrán at a performance
10. Thou shalt not take any notice of the above

written in the spirit of good humour and with no intention at all of offence toward the Bible

nor those who believe in its word.

Thou shalt not play before tuning.

Particularly for Mudcat:

Thou shalt not feed the trolls nor with them engage, neither with wit nor with sharp words, but shall ignore them.

Thou shalt not prattle.

Thou shalt not personally attack thy Mudcat neighbor, nor defame him in the eyes of his people.

Thou shalt not hide thy handle nor seek to disguise thy voice in the wind.

Thou shalt honor the Clones that they may feel appreciated.

Thou shalt not cut and paste, nor plagiarize the words of others.

Thou shalt not post drivel without reference.

The Ten Commandments of E-mail

Thou shalt include a clear and specific subject line.
Thou shalt edit any quoted text down to the minimum thou needest.
Thou shalt read thine own message thrice before thou sendest it.
Thou shalt ponder how thy recipient might react to thy message.
Thou shalt check thy spelling and thy grammar.
Thou shalt not curse, flame, spam or USE ALL CAPS.
Thou shalt not forward any chain letter.
Thou shalt not use e-mail for any illegal or unethical purpose.
Thou shalt not rely on the privacy of e-mail, especially from work.
When in doubt, save thy message overnight and reread it in the light of the dawn.

And, here's the "Golden Rule" of E-Mail:

That which thou findest hateful to receive, sendest thou not unto others.

perhaps they would be similar to :

The Ten Commandments of Jamming

(original source unknown)

I. Thou shalt not ever forsake the beat.

II. Thou shalt arrange thyselves in a small circle so that thou mayest hear and see the other musicians. Thou shalt listen with thine ears to the songs and attempt to play in accord with the group; also, open thine eyes betimes to look about thee, lest there be some visual sign someone is endeavoring to send thee. Thou shalt play softly when someone lifteth his voice in song, when playing harmony, and when thou knowest not what thou doest.

III. Thou shalt play in tune. Tune thine instument well, and tune it often with thine electric tuner, lest the sounds emanating from thine instrument be unclean.

IV. Thou shalt commence and cease playing each tune together as one, so that the noise ye make be a joyful noise, and is not an abomination. Whensoever a musician sticketh forth his foot as though he were afflicted with a cramp in the fatted calf, thou must complete the rest of that verse, and then cease.

V. Thou shalt stick out thine own foot or else lift up thy voice crying "This is it!", or "Last time!" if thou hast been the one to begin the song, and it has been played sufficient times over. If the one who began a tune endeth it not by one of these signs, then the tune will just go on and on, like the Old Testament, until the listeners say, "Hark! It all soundeth the same."

VI. Thou shalt concentrate and thou shalt not confound the music by mixing up the A part and the B part. Most songs, but not all, proceed according to the ancient law "AABB". But if thou sinneth in this regard, or make any mistake that is unclean, thou may atone not by ceasing to play -- but by reentering the tune in the proper place and playing on.

VII. Thou shalt be ever mindful of the key the banjo or accordion is tuned in, and play many tunes in that key. For the banjo is but a lowly instrument, which must needs be retuned each time there is a key change, and the accordion may not be tuned at all except by an expert.

VIII. Thou shalt not speed up or slow down accidentally when playing a tune, for it is an abomination. (see commandment I)

IX. Thou shalt not, by thine own self, commence noodling-off on a tune the other musicians know not, unless asked or unless thou art teaching that tune, for it is an abomination, and the other musicians will not hold thee guiltless, and shall take thee off their computer lists, yea, even unto the third and the fourth generation.

Chapter 3, vs 17-18 Book of khanduikus:

X. Thou shalt not come to the jam session to impress others with thine amazing talents for this also is an abomination. The song shalt be the center around which all musicians shall rotate, not vice-versa. "Attempts to make thine own star shine shall lead thee into darkness."

Thou should not mix up monkeys and apes

Naturally, my commandments only concern music threads.

1. Thou shalt not misspell a musician's name (if there is any way to look it up).

2. Thou shalt not post lyrics without saying where thou got them.

3. Thou shalt not post lyrics if the exact same lyrics have already been posted.

4. Thou shalt not say that a certain song is "by" a certain musician without specifying "written by" or "performed by." Likewise, if thou readest at another web site that that a certain song is "by" a certain musician, thou shalt not assume that "by" means "written by."

5. Thou shalt make a reasonable attempt to put line breaks in lyrics where they belong.

6. If thou hast attempted to use HTML, thou shalt preview thy message before posting it.

7. Thou shalt not post a link without saying where the link goeth, for all links die, but Mudcat music threads live forever.

8. Thou shalt not start a music thread without first making a reasonable attempt to find an existing thread on that topic.

9. Thou shalt not start a music thread without giving it a meaningful and specific title.

10. Thou shalt not assume or imply that thy favorite version of any traditional song or tune is the only authentic, true, original, or correct version.

I'm tired of the 'ten commandments format'. Here are a few thoughts of my own.

If someone posts something you appreciate, such as a tune, lyrics, link or history, thank the person, by name if possible.

I love 'do not feed the trolls.' Good one.

(Sad to say, I have discovered that one good way to stop a wrangle is to post something which involves leaving the computer and actually making some music. Amazing how many people flee the prospect of making a real effort.)

Here are two thoughts for dealing with unpleasant threads:

Calculate the time when the post was made. For example, if it was after the bars close in the UK, tell yourself that the poster is probably just full of beer and will be saner in the morning.

Keep in mind that some people just want somebody to talk to, but don't know how to go about starting a conversation in a gracious manner. See if you can be artful in dealing with them.

And just how is a bodhran to be heard on the Mudcat?

Thou shalt not denegrate bodhrans, banjos, didgereedoos, spoons and melodeons. Until after we have replayed the recording of your efforts! To You! What sauce would you like with the CD you are about to digest?
