Subject: RE: Any J.J. Cale Fans??? From: Will Fly Date: 17 Aug 10 - 04:08 AM I have all his records (as far as I know). My least favourite is the one with Clapton. I'm not a fan of the Clapton of the last 20 years or so, in any case, but John Cale's work is always wonderful. [Yup - his real name. He only styled himself "JJ" so that he wouldn't be confused with the other Joh Cale...] |
Subject: RE: Any J.J. Cale Fans??? From: Rob Naylor Date: 17 Aug 10 - 04:28 AM Bobert: It's amazing that so few people know that John Cale wrote "After Midnight"... Or "Cocaine".... Or "Call me the Breeze"... Or, or... I mean, this guy is one of the heavier covered songwriters of our generation yet folks go, "JJ Who"... I'm always careful to refer to him as "JJ" to distinguish him from the John Cale who was with Velvet Underground, and who is also someone I appreciate greatly. If you refer to "John Cale" on this side of the pond, almost everyone who's heard of them will assume you mean the Welshman from the Velvets who did the Shrek vrsion of "Hallelujah" rather than the Okie who wrote "After Midnight" and "Cocaine". |

Cale Somebody call for the doctor, I think I'm sick Ain't had my medicine in over a week My mind's fine but my body feels weak Call the doctor, I think I'm sick A shady lady took all my bread Ravished my body, lord, and messed with my head I don't know but I've had my fill Call the doctor and tell him I'm ill My money's gone and I've got no place to go I don't believe I've ever felt so low If you've got the time while you hang around Call the doctor and tell him I'm down *From gnu's link, above. |
Subject: RE: Any J.J. Cale Fans??? From: George Papavgeris Date: 17 Aug 10 - 06:31 AM "...don't go to strangers, woman, call on me..." I adore JJC and especially his guitar playing, "insinuating" twice as many notes as he plays, making you think he's played them when he has not... That is pure masterclass stuff. |

Subject: RE: Any J.J. Cale Fans??? From: michaelr Date: 17 Aug 10 - 01:40 PM J.J. Cale's laconic delivery has been hugely influential: after hearing him in the 70s, Eric Clapton quite clearly imitated him for a good while (think "Lay Down Sally"), and Mark Knopfler's entire vocal style (as well as his finger-picked electric guitar) can be seen as derived from Cale. Cale's classic records "Really", "Naturally" and "Okie" are full of minimalist gems that sound casually tossed-off but are in fact little songwriting masterpieces. |
Subject: RE: Any J.J. Cale Fans??? From: Will Fly Date: 17 Aug 10 - 01:47 PM Mark Knopfler's entire vocal style (as well as his finger-picked electric guitar) can be seen as derived from Cale. I'd go a fair way down that road, but there's a huge, largely unseen, folky background to Knopfler's playing, in addition to the Cale influence. They;re actually both quite cool guitarists in their own ways. |
Subject: RE: Any J.J. Cale Fans??? From: Rob Naylor Date: 17 Aug 10 - 02:35 PM Will, did you see the BBC Artworks show back in May where Mark Knopfler and Phil Cunningham got together to talk and jam? It was a really interesting programme. I enjoyed it much more than the "Sea Shanties" programme that was on around the same time. It's on YouTube in 3 segments now: Phil Cunningham Meets Mark Knopfler |
Subject: RE: Any J.J. Cale Fans??? From: Will Fly Date: 17 Aug 10 - 02:48 PM Yes, I saw that programme, Rob, and excellent it was! Too good and very talented guys from a very similar background whose musical paths had diverged. It was a lovely hour of chat and music. |

Subject: RE: Any J.J. Cale Fans??? From: PHJim Date: 05 Sep 12 - 12:19 AM When I first heard Crazy Mama, I ran out and bought the Naturally album with the raccoon in the red jacket with the top hat and cane. It was JJ's voice and Mac Gayden's slide guitar with the wahwah pedal that got me. I soon after bought a wahwah pedal and tried to learn that sound. I no longer own a wahwah and seldom play electric guitar, but I still love JJ's voice. |
