From: Bert

In view of recent discussions about what is folk music, I am curious as to what Mudcatters are actually singing now.

What are the last ten songs that you have sung in public? That is on stage, in a circle or sing or among friends.

Here's my list...

Laddies Who Fought and Won - by Harry Lauder
That's Not My Colorado - by Katlaughing
Size doesn't Matter - by Bert Hansell
Bathing Angel - by Bert Hansell
Silicone Cindy - by Bert Hansell
Liverpool Judies - traditional
Come to the Bower - by Allen Damron
Plastic Flower Seeds - by Bert Hansell
British Workman's Grave - Music Hall?
While London Sleeps - Music Hall?

Bert.

I prefer to avoid singing but sometimes I end up doing somthing. I guess that my most recent 10 are:

Dead Dog Scrumpy,
The Sick Note,
Johnny Jump Up,
The Wild Rover,
The Black Velvet Band,
The Fields of Athenry,
Something with a chorus that starts 'I've a fine felt hat and a strong pair of brogues',
The Leaving of Liverpool,
I'll Tell My Ma,
Sam Hall.

When Your Man Gets Busted - ?
Good Mornin' Blues - Huddie Ledbetter
You Don't Even Care - Tim Wallace

When She Wants Good Lovin' - Leiber & Stoller
Stop Doin' So Well - Christina Olsen

Well, we had an Elvis tape in the car on the way back from the jazz on Saturday so Ole Shep and Hound Dog were the last 2. At the concert I "joined in" (safely 50 yards back from the bands) with Peoria,
Margie,
Girls go crazy about th way I walk,
Bourbon St,
Down by the Riverside [is that one folk?),
John Brown's Body,
Just a Gigolo, and
(they were a West Country band) Drink up thee cider.
I think that's 10. All without the aid of Metaxas (but with the aid of a rather nice bottle of blush de Syrah rose) in the open air, hardly any rain and great fireworks later.

This bunch of songs might look more logical if I wasn't trying to learn banjo accompaniment for some of them - I wouldn't recommend this lot together as a set!

Sammy's Bar
Roseville Fair
Fifty Miles Of Elbow Room
Hello In There
A Thousand Miles Away
Swansea Town
Plastic Jesus
Jug Band Music
Ukulele Lady
Get Rhythm

Thankyou Bruce, you have just reminded me of Sammy's Bar - a song that I used to love but have not heard in years. Even though I am far more into paying than singing, I am going to have to find the words to this one as I can only remember bits of it.

Likely candidates (can't be absolutely sure they were the LAST, but...)from me:

Roseville Fair / Bill Staines
Arrow / Cheryl Wheeler
Blue Umbrella / John Prine
Matt Hyland / Trad ?
Water is Wide / Trad ?
Slow Down / Kevin Mulvenna (a local s/s friend)
Lying to the Moon / Matraca Berg (via Robin and Linda Willaims)
Circle Game / Joni Mitchell
The Boy With The Moon and Star on his Head / Cat Stevens
(Which just might get to claim that "longest title" Bruce from Bathurst was looking for)

and almost always end with Amazing Grace

Sunday night at the Starry Plough I sang "My Grandfather's Clock"
Two weeks earlier, same place, it was "Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye"
My usual solos with the Born Once Gospel Singers in performance are "Jimmy Brown the Newsboy" (A. P. Carter?) and "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere" (Dylan) Others in which I sing verses and they join in the chorus in sings at Sally's house are "The Green Green Grass of Home," "Will the Circle Be Unbroken," "Sittin' on Top of the World," "Times Are Gettin' Hard"
Songs I'm planning for future Starry Plough performances include Bob Gibson's "Abiline," with my added verses, of course, "Jody and the Kid" by Kris Kristopherson, and maybe Doc Watson's version of "Alberta"

Can't be sure, but the list is approximately:

No Matter How She Done It — Tampa Red/Georgia Tom
Weeping Willow — Cephus & Wiggins (written by the latter)
Baby, I Want You To Know — Bo Carter
Nobody Knows Y ou When You're Down And Out — Jimmie Cox
Cannonball — Trad? Carters?
How Long — Broonzy
In The Evenin' — also Broonzy, I think
Sportin' Life Blues — ????
Where Were You, Baby? — Josh White
Candy Man — John Hurt

I may have mixed in some other ones, but this is a pretty typical lineup for me, along with some other ragtime tunes and the odd Dylan, Tom Rush or Willie Nelson song and a few civil war ditties.

Girl on the Rim of the World
and, of course, "Glory, Glory Psychotherapy"

in the folkish vein Monday night as part of my performance.

Presently, I'm learning "Seven Bridges Road," "So Lonesome I Cry," and "How Will I Ever Be Simple Again"(Richard Thompson).

And I need to learn three new and wonderful bluegrass songs within two weeks for a contest that's coming up. Any suggestions? (I have a good range, and can sing way high up there...)

The last couple of times Bill let me go out for an evening, we went to folkie parties. Here's what I remember of what I sang, in no particular order:

The Vacant Chair (Civil War song) ... All the Cowhands wanta Marry Harriet -- (A Western swing song from the 40's); I didn't start it, but I was the only one there who knew all the words ... Run Come See, Jerusalem ... I Dream of Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair (Steven Foster) ... "Carly's Song," a friendship song by Carly Gewirz ... Children of the Heavenly Father, translation of a Scandinavian hymn ... Have been practicing The Night Visiting Song (trad), Sheath and Knife (Childe), Put on Your Old Grey Bonnet (pop song from the 20's), Beautiful Ohio (pop song from the 20's), John Peel, -- a real gemisch.

By the way, katlaughing, I was happy to see that you sang The Wayward Wind recently. Lisa Null and I sing it sometimes and I've been wanting to try it on the zither, believe it or not. - Rita F

Wyo, do you do Hard Times Come Again No More? Another one I like for a woman with a good voice and good range is The Lover's Return, an A. P. Carter song using the tune of Just a Closer Walk With Thee. John Prine's Paradise is another good one--I've heard it sung only by men, but there's no reason it shouldn't be sung by a woman. A lovely song on the same theme--but with not enough verses--is Aragon Mill. Every Night When the Sun Goes In is a great bluesy woman's song. --seed

Roger in Baltimore, I'm glad to hear about someone outside of Cleveland singing Tim Wallace songs. I've posted one of his songs to the DT, but have been reluctant to post more since I know he copyrights them, and haven't had a chance to ask him how he'd feel about it. For my money, Tim Wallace and Mark Graham are the funniest songwriters in the 'folk' community going these days (apologies to Lou and Peter Berryman, who have some gems).

In fact, the last songs I've been singing are

Your states name here

Water is alright in Tay

Sailor's grace

As the heart longs (a hymn based on the water is wide tune)

Sailor's Alphabet

Robert Waite (aka the ballad of Silver Jack).

Bonnie Silver Herring

Old Peculiar

I'm Satisfied (Missisipi John Hurt)

I don't feel no ways tired.

We had our first outdoor sing in the neighborhoods of Kuwiat City -- I am amazed that we actually stuck it out for the full 90 minutes; it was like a sauna last night. Our dedicated (soaked) singers sang:

Fathom the Bowl Paddy Lay Back The Band Played Waltzing Matilda Jolly Roving Tar Three Score and Ten Leaving of Liverpool All for me Grog Let Union Be in All Our Hearts South Australia The Grey Funnel Line

Allahamdala, Cheers, Brian

My last 10 were all done at Annap's Gathering in the gazebo on the Navasink. I had the great pleasure of accompaniment of Annap, Dick G, Susan of DT, Max, bbc, davidmc24, Duane D, and Jeri of NH. Wow!, what a crew! As I recall songs included: Isle of Haute Lullaby, Stewball, Sammy's Bar, The Loss of the Rupert Bay, Where Have All the Flowers Gone, Night Rider's Lament, The Unicorn, The Final Trawl, Goodbye, Fare You Well, and I accompanied Jeri & her fiddle on some of her original songs and others like Whisky Before Breakfast, and Ashoken Farewell. What a grand time!
