I'd think that in itself would qualify as "News of the Weird".

Somebody must think there's a market for such a movie. Will it be seen as a comedy?

Of course the way I read the AP article is a perfect illustration of the hazards of skimming or speed-reading.

I read it:   ..."it tells the story of a woman who smashed through the barriers of gender and class to be heard in the Abba musical 'Mamma Mia!' ".

I was also thinking this might be a folklore thread.   But maybe not.

I'm so tired of Streep....she always grossly over acts, and is very much full of herself....

BTW, they were talking about how Streep and Phyllida Lloyd worked together in Mamma Mia.

As I said, I misread it--but the misreading is quite a picture.

Eek, Streep? She's quite charisma free and cardboardy. Love her or loathe her, Thatcher had a very imposing presence which Streep could never pull off. (an English) Bette Davis is the only actress I can imagine actually succeeding. Though Miranda Richardson could give it a good try.

Saw an excellent production of a play called "Sink the Belgrano" at Tonbridge School in the south of England last year - it was actually an exam project for the boys. It was superb, and of course thatcher was played by a boy - and very well too!!

I would suggest that a man should play the part of the murdering bitch!!

ok fellas.... let's get back to the topic. Streep as Thatcher? I think it works.

Thatcher was over poised to the point of pretentious and Streep does that to the nines.

I thought I was the only person left in America who wasn't enamored of Meryl Streep. Almost every movie she's in bores me to tears. I don't hate her however.

But Tom Hanks- that overrated blowhard - is another story.

Actually, I like Streep most of the time. She even sings quite well.

As it happens, bubblyrat, the only Falklanders killed in the war were three women, Mrs Susan Whitley, Mrs Doreen Bonner and Mrs Mary Goodwin, accidental victims of British shelling - see here.

After all, there are about 100,000 Anglo-Argentinians.

Argentines please - someone is Argentine or is an Argentine. Argentinian was invented by the British gutter press during Las Malvinas war.

Anglo-Argentines are just that.

Will Streep weild an extra big handbag....the idea of MT handbagging the European leaders still amuses me.

As for Bonzo3legs comment on the Belgrano sinking, it was sunk because she was considered a threat to the British fleet. The fact she had a large number of conscripts on board is not relevant.

She was armed with Exocet missiles and very heavy guns. Yes she was steaming away from the area when sunk but she could have turned around in 10 minutes or less.

Following her sinking all other surface units stayed in port or well out of the area and therefore there was no further loss of life in the Argentinian Navy.

We knew they still had a couple of small diesal/electric submarines at sea, very quiet and we never did find them.

Not wishing to engage in a battle of wits with an unarmed man, I'd wager a hat full of guineas against all of the songs you can sing, that you know nothing more than the distorted half of the story presented by the media at the time.

But there were a large number of conscripts on board - there's no getting away from that, if it's all the same to you!!!

Still, you can't beat a bife chorizo with papas fritas in BA!!

Well if Streep can make a passable fist of the Dingo Baby Lady and the quiet home-loving wife in Bridges of Madison County I think she would make a reasonable fist of an assertive bombardier (I meant to say arrogant but there you are I would be bombardiered rather quickly).

Actually Helen Mirren would do a Thatcher just as well.

Anyway - if it is Hollywood doing it, Thatcher will have American ancestors and be far too reverential to the president.
Dare we mention her Bush?

I posted on here the other day suggesting that Jennifer Saunders should have the role. I think she'd be brilliant. However, I've since discovered that she has cancer - so maybe not.

I hope she makes a full recovery.

I just watched the DVD profile about Meryl Streep. She isn't a friendly lady at all. It showed those rude photographs taken at a Hollywood party a few years back in which she was photographed without underwear. It looked more like a cat with it's throat cut.
