Subject: RE: Saddleworth Festival - 16-18 July, 2010 From: Vin2 Date: 22 Jul 10 - 10:22 AM Yeah Ali, i think we all did ourselves proud - Dougie Maclean seemed genuinely impressed with the audience singing he got on Sat night. |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Festival - 16-18 July, 2010 From: Pistachio Date: 22 Jul 10 - 01:42 PM Ditto Vin, he stood there melting, yet asked for repeated choruses and did appear to relish the response. A master at making his audience feel like he was speaking to each as an individual! Hxx |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Festival - 16-18 July, 2010 From: Alio Date: 23 Jul 10 - 01:00 AM And his father had the same name as mine - Duncan Maclean! Hilary and I wee chatting at the Survivors Session - fantastic as always - and she's determined that there will be another Saddleworth FF, so we gave the dates out for 2011. I can't just remember what they are as Maureen and Joe and Dave and Ann Howden came back to my flat after the session - I think we managed to finish off the 2 bottles of Jamieson's Mo brought!! Ali xx |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Festival - 16-18 July, 2010 From: Vin2 Date: 23 Jul 10 - 05:26 AM Yes H he almost turned the hall into a giant steamy folk club - fabulous. Fab news re festival Ali. It must survive one way or another - i think the Sat night in the Hall and the final sessions in Greenfield and Uppermill on Sunday night proved that it's the folk what makes a folk festival! Glad you're still enjoying the Jamies! |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Festival - 16-18 July, 2010 From: GUEST,Orson Trap Date: 23 Jul 10 - 06:27 AM Re-live the festival again on You Tube, type in Saddleworth Folk Festival. |

Subject: RE: Saddleworth Festival - 16-18 July, 2010 From: GUEST,Chairman Date: 24 Jul 10 - 08:25 AM Thanks for all the kind comments about this years festival, despite the weather and the problems on the campsite, most festivalgoers enjoyed the various events over the weekend. Could I just add a word of caution to all the comments about next year's festival. The announcement of next years date was premature as there has been no decision taken about 2011. In order to ensure that this years festival went ahead four of the committee agreed to personally underwrite any losses, a situation that cannot continue into the future. The festival committee will review the situation when this year's accounts have been finalised. So apart from the financial aspect, our committee of five people needs strengthening to enable us to share the load. So finance, committee and the weather permitting here's looking optimistically forward to 2011 but some hard decisions will have to be taken before then. Paul Roberts Chairman SAFRA |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Festival - 16-18 July, 2010 From: GUEST Date: 24 Jul 10 - 08:31 AM Oops meant to say check out the SAFRA web site decisions about 2011 will be posted there Paul |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Festival - 16-18 July, 2010 From: GUEST,Willa Date: 24 Jul 10 - 10:54 AM I had a very varied and enjoyable w/end and,I kid you not,did NOT wear my wellies at all. Hope next year is a definite - I'll make it a priority. My thanks to all those who were involved in planning and running the event again. |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Festival - 16-18 July, 2010 From: Red and White Rabbit Date: 25 Jul 10 - 05:21 AM great weekend again - it was wonderful to catch up with everyone again and late nights of great music were just the rest I needed - had to go back to work on Monday so missed survivors this year - drat! Scowie thanks for everything, Sid sorry I missed you and thanks to the organisers for chance to do a different workshop this year - enjoyed it. Hope to see you all again next year Sue |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Festival - 16-18 July, 2010 From: nutty Date: 25 Jul 10 - 01:00 PM I understand that a tribute CD of Theresa Tooley was launched at the festival (in support of the Motor Neuron charity) Given the support Theresa gave to the festival over the years. I'm saddened that this has not been mentioned. Could this be why the festival is lacking support?? |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Festival - 16-18 July, 2010 From: Noreen Date: 26 Jul 10 - 04:21 AM You think Saddleworth festival may be lacking support because one aspect of it has not been mentioned on a US.based folk and blues website? |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Festival - 16-18 July, 2010 From: GUEST,Captain Farrell Date: 26 Jul 10 - 05:16 AM Lacking support Nothing could be farther from the truth. This years festival was very well supported and after the facts are collated may have been the best ever in terms of numbers.Where more support is needed is on the committee, with long term commitment in years rather than short term help and then a hands on approach sleeves rolled up for 5 days Thurs. to Mon. to keep things on track. As with all things festivals are time consuming and sometimes people who have run things for perhaps ten years plus, their lives change family sometimes has to come first. So what is needed is some new blood, people with ideas to keep the festival fresh and alive in fact similar to the fist 13 years. So perhaps you are just about to retire you fancy some joy some tears something really worthwhile contact the chairman and see if you can make the difference. When the festival is over you really feel that you have done your bit. |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Festival - 16-18 July, 2010 From: nutty Date: 26 Jul 10 - 06:31 AM Believe me CF,if I lived closer I would love to help. I have attended every festival until this year and supported it in every way I can. Noreen - yes this is an international site but, given Theresa's standing among the mudcat fraternity, news of the tribute and CD launch would not have been amiss. |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Festival - 16-18 July, 2010 From: Vin2 Date: 26 Jul 10 - 07:45 AM The cd of Theresa was mentioned at the survivor's night session in Greenfield but i forgot to get one so if anyone can point me to where/whom i can contact, i'll send chegue for a copy. As for festival attendance, it seemed to be ok from what i saw especially on Sat night in the Hall. Most of the sessions i attended e.g the Commercial seemed to fill ok. Mebbe one or two like the late night Sat sing in the Con club, weren't quite as packed as previous years but overall i found it ok. Shame about the rain again for the Morris and dance teams tho. If the festival goes ahead next year, we can all help a bit. If not able to sit on commettee then e.g by leafleting and putting flyers out at gigs and clubs etc perhaps bring forward to June when it seems to have been drier over past years ? |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Festival - 16-18 July, 2010 From: nutty Date: 26 Jul 10 - 10:32 AM I should have all info later in the week. And a stack of CD'S too, I hope. |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Festival - 16-18 July, 2010 From: Vin2 Date: 27 Jul 10 - 08:49 AM Nice one nutty |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Festival - 16-18 July, 2010 From: Alio Date: 01 Aug 10 - 05:48 PM I believe that all Theresa's CD's were sold Hazel, which is great. I was given one by Alan and Ann for the radio programme. Joe, Mo and I listened on Monday morning and we found it really emotional, especially as we remembered some of them at Whittlebury. I'll be playing 2 of the tracks a week on MOnday, so make sure you listen on line please! Ali xx |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Festival - 16-18 July, 2010 From: GUEST,paulg Date: 01 Aug 10 - 06:49 PM Good festival but would have been good to have seen a return for The Young'Uns after they were so good last year. |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Festival - 16-18 July, 2010 From: Vin2 Date: 02 Aug 10 - 07:59 AM Yes Paul the The Young Uns were terrific and am sure they'll be back at some point in the future (assuming the festival has a future - let's hope so) - The Wilsons too eh? |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Festival - 16-18 July, 2010 From: GUEST,paulg Date: 02 Aug 10 - 09:49 AM The Wilson's and The Young'uns performed on stage together at Warwick Folk Festival this year - what a fantastic sound. A force to be reckoned with in my opinion. Paul |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Festival - 16-18 July, 2010 From: r.padgett Date: 02 Aug 10 - 11:14 AM With respect The Wilsons sing in unison The Young 'Uns are a three part harmony group! TYUns are swamped by such voices and their subtleties can be lost! TYUns patter is off the cuff, spontaneous and funny! Nice lads all of 'em (Wilsons and TYUns) Ray |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Festival - 16-18 July, 2010 From: Vin2 Date: 29 Nov 10 - 07:58 AM No festival next year then ? |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Festival - 16-18 July, 2010 From: GUEST,Captain Farrell Date: 29 Nov 10 - 09:17 AM I think they will announce any news on their Web site |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Festival - 16-18 July, 2010 From: Alio Date: 29 Nov 10 - 11:35 AM I've been trying to find out for some time! Hilary and Pete (both still on the committee) told me that there was a meeting last week (the 25th I think) and said they'd let me know the result, following it. I've heard nothing yet unfortunately. And this weekend I was MCing at Bedworth Folk Festival, and lost count of the number of people who came up and asked me about Saddleworth! I guess people really do need to know now. Ali x |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Festival - 16-18 July, 2010 From: Vin2 Date: 30 Nov 10 - 08:19 AM Hope it's positive news when it comes. Even if it goes back to a two dayer as it started out 13 years ago: maybe stick to mostly local talent with myabe one 'big name' if costs allow: sing-a-rounds in the pubs and mebbe use the Con club concert room at Greenfield Con Club as main venu rather than civic hall if cheaper. Move to June instead of July ? Just some thoughts. Be happy to help out publicing, leafletting etc. One lives in hope (well Heywood actually). |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Festival - 16-18 July, 2010 From: GUEST,padgett Date: 02 Dec 10 - 05:29 AM See other thread started by Jim McD Apparently lack of committee is shown as demise of 2011 festival So its get off your b*ms or there will not be one in 2011! I agree with my mate Vin smaller festival, excellent venues at the Con clubs, Commercial, Museum or even use The Cross Keys In my view the Civic needs using more effectively time wise or not at all The thing is we all want to sing and play, Festivals and Guests want bums on seats and ppl paying!! the festival apparently had no problems with numbers and finances, so its really down to committee ppl prepared to take the strain I have just retired from running Barnsley Easter singaround after 20 years I am told! Running things is a difficult experience, so any selfless ppl about? Ray |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Festival - 16-18 July, 2010 From: Vin2 Date: 02 Dec 10 - 08:37 AM Hi Ray, yeah tis a shame but as the safra web site says they may resurrect in 2012 if they get enough volunteers. Although i don't drive and live a bit away from Uppermill, I'd help in any capacity i can even if with publicising etc. Goodd idea thos for smaller venues like Con clubs etc for mebbe singarounds and War of Roses of course. Anyway mate hope to see you around somewhere in the summer. Mind ow yer go ! |
Subject: RE: Saddleworth Festival - 16-18 July, 2010 From: Alio Date: 15 Dec 10 - 05:01 AM The committee used to be pretty large a few years ago - maybe members need to think about how they welcome (and involve) any newcomers? Ali |
