What a fabulous birthday I've had today!! We arrived home from the Isle of Wight to find a parcel from the other side of the world on the doorstep with an incredible amount of stamps on it!!!

Thank you my Dearest Santa, I promise I'll be good and not open it till Christmas, I don't want it to turn into a piece of coal *grin*

Dear Santa,

I am impressed with your swift selection and sending of something special for me. I shall wait until Christmas Day; thus prolonging the anticipation of delight.

Thank you, thank you! (I note that you paid a hefty amount of postage...you are a noble Santa indeed!)

In a shop, I saw a small metal tin with a Xmas scene and "Lump Of Coal" writen on it for $4.99... witha small lump of coal in it.

Please note that the pressure mounts and mounts as Christmas draws near and you don't open the present. Coal is carbon, and under enough pressure it becomes diamonds. Wait for Christmas and you'll have diamonds -- big ol' rocks!

Why lumps of coal? I always understood that misused items of value turn into dead leaves — or, as in Thurber's brilliant 'The 13 Clocks', into tears - & then the Todal will gleep & get you!

We were always told that the penalty for not believing in Father Christmas or doing something wrong in the run-up to Christmas was to find coal and ashes in our pillowcases (we didn't have stockings - you can get more in a pillowcase!). I assumed it was spent fuel from the sleigh.

What kind of sleigh runs on coal, Anne? Who ever heard of a steam-sleigh? & what then would the reindeer have been for?

Mind you, we had pillowcases too — greedyguts or what! I wonder Father Xmas would ever visit such greedy children as you & me at all - except perhaps, as in the German tradition, to get the birch from his sack for our bottoms instead of the prezzies for our stockings...!

I hope you're not expecting me to have been logical or scientific about how the sleigh was powered ... I just thought that if Father Christmas had coal and ashes to distribute it must come from somewhere. And we didn't consider that we were greedy, but pillowcases were simply the normal thing for us to put out on Christmas Eve, a tradition that obviously came from our parents. It was only later on that I realised some people really did use stockings.

Anne - no indeed; I thought your speculations were very good examples of that sort of childhood logic which we all fondly remember. My last post was, as I hope you realised, much more intended to be tongue-in-cheek than captious or hostile.

Merry Xmas! - Michael

Michael, I did indeed realise your post wasn't entirely serious ... but I was also intrigued at my own childhood logic (or lack of) and the memory that pillowcases were so much the norm in our house that stockings seemed amazingly exotic. Mind you, I had friends who received Father Christmas presents that were mind-bogglingly expensive by comparison with what we had in those pillowcases - every family has its own traditions, clearly.

Dear Santa,

I hope you're feeling better.

My present apparently came Friday night, delivered by elves while I was out at the FSGW open sing. Since it came earlier than expected, Hash & McGhee the house brownies who are guardians of my townshack and who know the drill, got Molly-kitty to let them in and they saw to it that the elves and reindeer were well provided for, as promised. Apparently they partied quite loudly for some time and I heard about it from the neighbors the next morning, so I covered for them and had to take the blame for it all, as well as having to do a little clean up. Apparently, elves like single malt and Buddy Guy & Junior Wells on the box cranked up to the max!

I may use my UK atlas that a friend gave me while I was over there to narrow down the whereabouts of my Santa, but promise the present will wait to be opened on Christmas morn.

So thanks in advance. I'm sure it will be wonderful, as I've been doing this for a few years and my Santas haven't let me down yet. I've gotten to meet a lot of them at a later time and they've been fine folk without fail. I hope I've done as well for my Santees. This has become a fun and cherished tradition for me.

Santa must have an outpost in Ottawa, because I have a package from him, postmarked from that fair city, sitting on my dining-room table right now! Thank you, Santa! I can't wait to open it (but I will). Your salmon jerky and seal fat will be waiting for you on The Night. And maybe a wee nip of something warming.

Your grateful

Very relieved to hear the package made it despite the recalcitrance of certain reindeer and one or two elves - You gave them single malt? That was indeed a foolish, if generous, decision. You realise now they are never going to be satisfied with the standard issue supermarket sherry? I'll never hear the last of it. However I know you acted with the best of possible intentions. Or perhaps the single malt was consumed in an excess of party excitement?

At any rate, I hope you enjoy the contents of the package and that you have a very merry Christmas indeed.

Dear Maire-aine--My box arrived! I am delighted! We opened the outside box and I am saving the wrapped things for Christmas, which will really mean 12/29, because we are going to our daughter's house on the 22nd for the holiday. You hit all the nails right on the head with the other stuff. We love maple syrup, and that jug is just right to go along to Pittsburgh for the Christmas waffles, and we love dried cherries. We haven't had Michigan's version of either, before. The calendar makes it look like your community is the place to be for fun and culture. Thank you, thank you for your thoughtfulness and generosity, and I'll write again after I get to open the surprises.--Love, Jenn

My prezzie arrived, on Thursday as I had predicted (yesterday's major blizzard couldn't have had anything to do with the delay!)
Other than a large goofy reindeer head for the front doorknob and a little prickly hedgehog ornament that poked out, the rest of the goodies will wait for the Day. And there's simply no clue as to who you could be......

....although the postmark "Brunswick, Maine" might just give me the teensiest of hints....

Okay, it's opened. Maple sugar candy, maple syrup spread, a chocolate bar in the shape of New Hampshire, Tourist info about Bat Goddess' neck of the woods (My brother lives north of Worcester, MA, so that will come in handy), a T-shirt from the Portsmouth NH tall ships festival (one size smaller than I wear, so I may regift it to someone who will appreciate it), a peice of local rock with garnets in it, an ocarina in the shape of an iguana (I think, it's folk art and vaguely iguana shaped), various local tourist souvenirs. The maple sugar candy is proof of a divinity. I bought some artisan bread for the spread, Will try it later. The refrigerator magnet is on my fridge, next to one that Sinsull sent me a few years ago. The ocarina sounds fine. Thanks, BG. It's all greatly appreciated.

Severn! What can I say ? I am still gobsmacked. This amazing parcel arrived this morning. I have to admit to opening it and it was like opening an Aladin's Cave with the most wonderful music bursting out at the seams and some interesting other bits and pieces and a fantastic song book too. I have spent the day listening when I should have been doing loads of chores but it's been brilliant. Thankyou so much... I better do some drawing now!!!

Many many thanks and have a wonderful Christmas

Ahhhhh, Sarah!

I'm glad to see that if you were overcome by temptation enough to open your box of local treasures upon arrival, you were also overcome by joy ("gobsmacked", as it were) at the contents! I find cheap but wonderful goodies all year round and put them into a large box to be redistributed when Holidays and Birthdays come around and that way I can deal in quantity as well as quality and actually have some things to give that I might actually believe in.

If you are on Facebook and look up Severn Savage, you'll find far better photos to draw your cartoon portrait from than the one on Mudcat.

PM me at some later time to let me know which recordings you liked best, as I gave you a fairly wide range to sample.

Enjoy!
Santa

I enjoyed the correspondance and clues.

Thank you, Santa. I love my presents. The gloves fit perfectly, and I shall make good use of them this winter. I esp. liked the heather card and all the Ogham background.

But Santa didn't give me many clues to go by. Yorkshire recipes, Syke terriers and a knitter with the middle name of Heather... and Mudcat search isn't working. How will I ever find out who you are?

Again, many thanks, and have a wonderful Christmas, and a healthy, prosperous New Year.

My Santa turns out to be an A-Lister Celebrity, there being no finer Lister to starboard OR to port. The "Anne Lister lister-y lustre-y history & mystery box" is now opened to reveal lots of things that explain the Listoricaly Historical essence of all Welshness to one uninitiated in such things. One was even in coloring book form, so that even a child of near 61 who'd thought "A Child's Christmas In Wales" was about Pinnochio can understand and another will have me cooking fluently in Welsh in no time flat. There were a few others, too, and an authentic rain poncho with Wales written right on each reversable side and to top it off, a marvellous Anne Lister CD that is playing as I speak and a little red Welsh dragon who smiles down at me from atop my computer screen and makes the mighty Puff look like the Geico Gekko.

Thank you, Anne, for things silly, useful and musically uplifting, an unbeatable combination on a Christmas morn!

A fine set of holidays and a wonderous year ahead to you!

Thank you, JennieG! Amazing how many things you managed to pack into that modest-sized envelope! The book, candles, honey (is Woolworth the same company that used to be here in the U.S.? I didn't know they existed anywhere any more? Seeing that name is like bumping into a long lost friend!) And what an interesting wood in the spreader handle. As I unpacked the bundle I handed the newspaper pages to family members to read. They enjoyed the local news from down under!

Woo hoo! My Secret Santa is Animaterra! Thank you, Allison! I got some New Hampshire maple sugar candy, a pretty pocket purse, a mystery book set in the New Hampshire mountains, and TWO CDs -- one by Allison and Hunt Smith, and another of the Animaterra Women's Chorus! Yay! I've been hearing ABOUT Allison and her group for quite a while, but never actually heard them -- so here's my chance! I haven't played the CDs yet (things are still a little chaotic at my house, and probably will be for several days, with all the kids and grandkid here), but I plan to soon!

Thank you, thank you, Allison! And Happy New Year!

{Wow} Merry Christmas, and thank you! Somehow, through iron will, your package got star billing - it was opened last. Everybody likes to see what's in the SS pressy. I opened the box, and there was an Italy-shaped tissuesomething. "Aha, I've been given the boot." but on, even better, I had a genuine red furry stocking - my first ever- full of Stuff. There were nuts (good, good, following tradition), little wrapped candies ,Sin-o-Mints (for the Sinner in you). Then, a wind-up head toy, some teeny post-its (I can use these). Then came the evidenc that you've done your research. My librarian self loves the bookmarks (on magnetic, and one of the Nancy Pearl action figure. I've met her, and she does have that good a sense of humor), and the folklore book is a fine choice; I've already started reading it. The cross-stitch kit got started yesterday as well. The cd sounds great! Sort of gives you a hint what I was up to yesterday, eh? And cooking stuff? You must be psychic, I can use everything - and want to. I was out of Old Bay Seasoning, the dip ingredients won't last the week, and who can't use another well-made potholder?
There's just one thing I didn't get. Your name. I have a guess, but will you please 'fess up, please, Santa?

Thanks to Barbara in Lancashire somewhere (despite the package return address of Scotland!) -- judging by the Lancs calendar (hung in advance), the Lancs recipe book, and the Lancs dialect book!

Hmm... Barbara Shaw is in Connecticut, and Barbara, as in "Blessings, Barbara", is in Oregon, so it must be a Barbara who goes by some other Mudcat moniker -- hints??

The Eagle has landed! & left a huge box of goodies from Santa Hollowfox. The eagle didn't drop any feathers but left his image all over the parcel sent by the US Post office.

I've listened to the "official" pressie - a local CD of 'Songs of Western Pennsylvania' by the Newlanders & will eventually get round to the Mudcatter CDs (Jean Ritchie & John Roberts) & the piece of history (Kent State May 4 project)

I've also read all the local paper wrappings & just loved the comics from the Tribune Chronicle. Some of my favourite strips there & it's good to see that we're not behind in the Prince Valiant, Garfield, For Better or Worse, Wizard of Id, Zits, Hagar the Horrible & Blondie strips. It's years since I've seen Doonesbury (website found & bookmarked), Dennis the Menace & Andy Capp & I just love the new ones. I'll be very carefully preserving the comics with the rest of my comic strip & cartoon collection. I'll probably use my new iron to carefully iron it so it can go into my archival scrapbook!

I'll start one of the embroideries & pour over the maps over the next few days. The Niagara Falls souvenir has already found a place in my cabinet.

THANKYOU Santa Hollowfox.

I'm glad it arrived in good shape. I always like to read the newspaper packing when I get a box in the mail, too. Enjoy, Mary

Becca, your arithmetic is better than mine...... I'm reviewing Sesame Street for a refresher.

Santa, thank you for the books! Santa already revealed himself to me (figuratively speaking) as RangerSteve. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

That'd be Barb'ry, I think. She was my Santee once, and Lancashire sounds right.

I've been assured something will come by Epiphany, so I live in hope. As I'm busy spending my insurance settlement for the October burglary the post at the moment is full of nice surprises.
I hope all other currently Santa-less Santees will be lucky soon!

I sit here, a happy (snow) bunny. My mind is engaged, my tummy is looking forward to some interesting cooking, and my ears are pretty.

My SS package arrived while I was away in Canada but there is NOTHING nicer than dragging in from a long and tiring trip to have presents awaiting.

I my parcel was a book on weavers and weaving supplies in New Mexico, a book of recipes celebrating the 2009 Albaquerque Tomato Fiesta (if I ever travel America, that will be a 'must-see'!) and the sweetest little pair of earrings which I think are silver-set turquoise li'l flowers.

IIRC, the earrings were the idea of Mrs. Santa - a very very wise woman with excellent taste.

It is my guess that my SS is Art Brooks ... who I know doesn't live in New Mexico (speaking as someone who knows his SS from last year intimately). The "Mrs Santa" allusion fits. However, if I'm wrong, then AB is playing evil elf for some other 'Catter, as I'm pretty sure I saw his name on the return address before my friend whipped the wrapping away. (She takes this SS stuff way too seriously! Packaging was even recycled from her house so I couldn't rifle through the garbage.)

Anyhooo, how good are these presents, eh? Come summer, I'll be making up a mess of tomato based sauces, with some other dishes in the meantime. Not sure I know what all of the ingredients are; I shall have to wikipee on "arugula", "Fontina" or "Bucheron" cheese, "Peekytoe" crabmeat (would steel toecap crab work?)and "orecchiette"? NO! DON'T TELL ME ! It's all part of the magic.

So, thank you Santa! Perfect job! Hugs & kisses and Happy New Year!

sian

Santa,

What appears to be the preview gift has arrived. I will be busy the next couple days reading all enclosed material and listening to the cd to try to figure out who you are so I can solve the puzzle and get the "Grand prize" :-) You are a very good puzzle creater and I am a very poor puzzle solver so it could take more than "a few minutes".

Thanks again!

Sian, glad you like the package. Actually, herself picked the books and I picked the earrings - we collaborate. There is a shop here I like that specializes in the work of local artists. Those are, if I remember correctly, from Zuni Pueblo...they may be from Zia instead, but the card with them will say.

And you were my SS last year? I never did figure it out!

Yep, great stuff, Art. In fact, I'm having my hair trimmed tomorrow so my earrings can be seen in their full glory! It says, "Edison Yatsate Zuni" on the back of the card and "Tanner Chaney Galleries" on the front. I'm a big fan of buying local craft!

And, yes, twas me last year, with the ponies and the boats and the mansion and the return space flight. I DID try to leave you hints but the penny never dropped!

Epiphany has come and gone and we are now in the grip of the snow and ice - which should suit Santa and his sleigh but isn't helping our postie one bit. He hasn't visited us for a couple of days now.
So I'm still left minus a pressie.

I mailed two boxes using Priority mail at the same time on Dec. 22, and one reached my brother two days later. The second reached my sister on Jan. 4. I think they must have hand-carried it from Fort Worth to Seattle.

Haven't yet had a chance to play the CD, but the little basket will be perfect for putting my newly replaced jewellery in, and we're intrigued to try the jelly.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Dear Vectis

I hope that the items contained within your package were to your satisfaction.

There will be one more item to come. Time and distance caused a delay in getting it organized, so watch out for another package, probably from the same source as the last one. MGAS is a very helpful elf!

AHA, there it is. I spend too much time on the internet, but somehow get confused by the most straightforward of forums (at least I eventually remembered my password).

I got out of bed one afternoon this holiday break, and my roommates told me I had a package from the UK. I was surprised and wondered who could have sent it. Many thanks to Micca - my extra-secret ninja Santa!

I'm working on a big costume design project, so the tea will definitely help me (and my roommates) get through this semester. The chocolates look fantastic (I've started on one of the larger bars - I'll get to the small ones eventually!) and I'll have a look at the book once I finish my current one. Many, many thanks for the present, and many apologies for such a late reply!

Good memory--I just checked--the last time she logged in was 5 years ago.

Don't be a stranger here, kiddo! I brag about you all of the time. But you'll have to come and find out where. :)

Thanks again, Micca, that was a charming idea to completely surprise her. In case you're wondering what she looks like, here's a photo of Moonglow a few years ago. She's the one in the pack. :)

Moonglow, I am glad You got the parcel!! much of the serious college work done in UK Universities is fuelled by Tea and Chocolate (the non serious is powered by BEER)I am a Science Technician but have designed and built sets for school and college stage productions so I have some understanding of the pressure of "Production deadlines" Your secret Ninja Santa grew out of a remark SRS made about how you had both enjoyed the Tea from a previous SS delivery,so I thought a Secret Santa encore would be a nice surprise to a Hard working student( You ARE a hard working student?) The book is not a "read" but a book for "dipping" into,
