Some of the old links have broken over the years. Here are a couple of replacements:

Charley Noble (02 May 03 - 11:35 AM ) mentioned and ClaireBear (19 Sep 09 - 01:50 AM) linked to "Come Take a Trip in My Air Ship" in the Levy collection. Find it here.

GUEST,Jim (02 May 03 - 03:54 AM) mentioned "Rishathra, or, Prime Directive Shmime Directive" by Ookla the Mok. For what it's worth, it's the last song in their Supersecret album, and you can get lyrics (pdf) by clicking the album cover (red background, blue/yellow shield marked "Shh") on this page.

Five minutes before Guest Jim, Susanl posted a link to her own http://susanlatimer.com/clouds.htm but her website's all gone now, taken over by Japanese-language commercial-looking content. I wonder what she'd linked to, 11 1/2 years ago?

Billy Bragg wrote "The Space Race is Over" -

When I was young I told my mum
I'm going to walk on the Moon someday
Armstrong and Aldrin spoke to me
From Houston and Cape Kennedy
And I watched the Eagle landing
On a night when the Moon was full
And as it tugged at the tides, I knew deep inside
I too could feel its pull

The Moody Blues did a whole album with mostly space related songs, To Our Children's Children's Children (1969)

From the opening, "Higher and Higher":

Blasting, billowing, bursting forth
With the power of ten billion butterfly sneezes
Man, with his flaming pyre
Has conquered the wayward breezes

Climbing to tranquility/ Far above the cloud
Conceiving the heavens/ Clear of misty shroud

And "Floating"

Bouncing about on the moon
Guess you'll all be up here soon
The candy stores they'll be brand new
And you'll buy a rock
With "The Moon" right through

And "Sun Is Still Shining"

Everything's turning/ Turning around
See with your mind/ Leave your body behind
Now that we're out here/ Open your heart
To the universe/ Of which we're a part

No-one seems to have mentioned Heinlein's Cool Green Hills of Earth. It never appeared as an entire song, but there were several verses and part-verses. It COULD go to the tune of The Holy Ground, though preferably without the shouted bit.

I remember that song... don't know artist or title.

It's sort of amazing that the original question posting is the only reference on the internet (found in a search) relating to this song.

Really shows the limitation of knowledge on the internet for things prior to the mid 1990's!

Looked to left & right of it
Couldn't stand the sight of it
So quickly flew away"
Used to sing this to my sons. Is there any more??

As well as Astronomie Domine Pink Floyd also did Interstellar Overdrive.

Then there's Queen's "39":

In the year of '39 assembled here the Volunteers
In the days when lands were few
The ship sailed out into the blue and sunny morn
The sweetest sight ever seen

And as night followed day
So the storytellers day
That the score brave souls inside
For many a lonely day sailed across the milky seas
Ne'er looked back, never feared, never cried

Don't you hear my call though you're many years away?
Don't you hear me calling you?
Write your letters in the sand
For the day I take your hand
In the land that our grandchildren knew

In the year of '39 came a ship in from the blue
The Volunteers came home that day
And they bring good news of a world so newly born
Though their hearts so heavily weigh

For the earth is old and grey, little darling we'll away
But my love this cannot be
For so many years have gone, though I'm older but a year
Your mother's eyes, from your eyes cry to me

Don't you hear my call though you're many years away?
Don't you hear me calling you?
Write your letters in the sand
For the day I take your hand
In the land that our grandchildren knew

Don't you hear my call though you're many years away?
Don't you hear me calling you?
All your letters in the sand cannot heal me like your hand
For my life still ahead, pity me

Back in the 60's there was a song about a flying saucer and its occupant - a little green man. It has a Mexican flavor in the lyrics. I have tried over 40 years to locate its title. All I remember is the opening lines which go like this:

Went to the beach one sunny day
see a flying saucer in the bay
See my girl, she say stay away
she greet the little green man
aye yah yah yah yah.

He was little with two big green feet
both of them move to the cha cha beat.
-----------------------------------------
That's all I remember.

This qualifies as a space man song. but with a title I have yet to find. If anyone knows or recognizes this, please append to this blog so I can get a copy of this song before it's too late. Thank You

I'm looking for a song i heard back in the 1980's it was really like the X-Files era. It was a dance tune kinda industrial sounding.

The chorus was something like "You've got to believe me" it was about a UFO sighting or abduction or something. I don't know who did it. I'd love to hear it again.

The saucer and monster reported to have landed at Flatwoods, West Virginia, in 1953 inspired a local contemporary song to the tune of "Sweet Betsey from Pike":

The size of the phantom was a sight to behold,
Green eyes and red face so the story was told,
It floated in air with fingers of flame,
It was gone with a hiss just as quick as it came.

Oh phantom of Flatwoods from Moon or from Mars,
Maybe from God and not from the stars,
Please tell us why you flew o'er our trees,
The end of the world or an omen or peace?

Subject: Lyr Add: STAR TREK PARTY SONG (Mike Sutton)
From: MikeofNorthumbria
Date: 23 Sep 09 - 06:02 PM

A few years ago, our Morris team was booked to do an interval spot at a festival ceilidh. When we got there, the audience seemed ominously small, but our musician remarked : "Don't worry, the party never starts till the Klingons arrive." Of course, Morris men aren't really like Klingons – well not much! – but sure enough, once we got there, more people started crowding in, and the evening became very enjoyable.

Eventually, a song grew from that seed crystal. At first I thought it would need a tune rather like the Admiral's song from HMS Pinafore (… "And now I am the ruler of the Queen's Navee!"), but our aforementioned musician sings it to a speeded up version of an old dance tune, "The Durham Rangers". This seems to work well, but feel free to experiment.

Wassail!

The Star Trek Party Song

There's a whisper in the alley, there's a murmur down the lane,
There's a rumour circulating that the lads are out again.
So the quiet and the cautious are all leaving on vacations
While the noisy and rambunctious are preparing celebrations
All the traders put their shutters up, and hide away in fear,
But the party never starts until the Klingons get here.
(Yes, the traders put their shutters up, and hide away in fear,
But the party never starts until the Klingons get here!)

Mr Spock has taped his ears (in case they're torn off in the fray)
Captain Kirk has let his hair down (or he's bought a new toupée).
While Uhura's getting mellow, and Bones is hanging loose,
Mr Scott has found the bar, and started knocking back the juice,
There's a bison on the barbecue, and ninety kegs of beer,
But the party never starts until the Klingons get here.
(There's a bison on the barbecue, and ninety kegs of beer,
But the party never starts until the Klingons get here!)

The Romulan Shakespeare Company have done their mummers' play,
And robots have been summoned, to wash the blood away,
The Cardassian Morris Dancers are all sharpening their sticks,
While their heavy-metal jug band roars at forty thousand klicks
There are twelve Bajoran strippers swinging from the chandelier,
But the party never starts until the Klingons get here!
(There are twelve Bajoran strippers swinging from the chandelier,
But the party never starts until the Klingons get here!)

Now the Enterprise is outward bound, they've beamed up all the crew,
Although most are still hung over, and the rest look rather blue.
The old Feringi barman has begun to count his cash,
But the Klingon lads are looking round for something else to smash.
And half the planet may be wrecked, but still the fun goes on,
Because the party isn't over till the Klingons have gone!
(Yes, half the planet may be wrecked, but still the fun goes on,
Because the party isn't over till the Klingons have gone!)

(c)Mike Sutton, 1999

There are two completely different "Beam Me Up Scotty" songs, one the Eric Bogle song, the other by Tom Rush.

Mojo Nixon recorded a song called "UFOs, Big Rigs, & BBQ"; and on a related note, with Jello Biafra on "Prairie Home Invasion" did the rewrite "Convoy In The Sky".

And there's the new CD "To Touch the Stars"; see http://www.prometheus-music.com/

I think it may have been Perry Como, about 50 years ago, who sang:

'Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket - save it for a rainy day ... '

to which someone added:

'If you catch a sputnik, put it in a matchbox, send it to the USA.'

[Why do I find that so impossible to forget? Maybe it is the memory of my mother laughing at it.]

There was this gawdawful thing we sang in 4th grade (late 60's on the heels of the Sputnik shame when US was pushing the space program) called Beep Beep There Goes a Satellite.

BEAUTIFUL ZELDA (FROM GALAXY FOUR) by The Bonzo Dog Band

She's broken all the super hearts of the
Super Heroes of the galaxy
So why does she wanna mess around with me?
yeah...

Listen to my story
It's sad but it's true
Please don't laugh, it could happen to you
Beautiful Zelda from Galaxy Four (oh no)
Suddenly walked through my door

Beautiful Zelda, leave me alone
Just get on back to the Twilight Zone
Don't try your jive on a poor Earth boy
'Cause your kind of love don't bring me no joy
(oh no!)

A fourth dimensional space warp brought her to me
Oh yeah
The most beautiful girl I ever did see
Oh yeah
She gave me her hand but when I held her
Oh yeah
I was fooled by the beautiful Zelda

Beautiful Zelda, tell me the truth
I'm just a clean livin' all-Earth youth
Don't try your jive on a poor Earth boy
'Cause your kind of love don't bring me no joy

Beautiful Zelda
Beautiful Zelda
Beautiful Zelda

Dan Hicks & His Acoustic Warriors have a song, the spoken introduction of which goes: "We'd like to do a song that has no problem with the belief in alien spacecraft, UFOs, and the possibility of an Earthling being able to maybe fly around a little bit. It's called 'Hell, I'd Go.' It features the fine vocalese of the Martianettes on this one."

This recording of it doesn't have the spoken bit, and appears to have the end of another song first.

Ceatano Veloso: London, London

'm wandering round and round nowhere to go
I'm lonely in London and London is lonely so
I cross the streets without fear
Everybody keeps the way clear
I know, I know no one here to say hello
I know they keep the way clear
I am lonely in London without fear
I'm wandering round and round here nowhere to go
While in my eyes
Go looking for flying saucers in the sky

Oh sunday, monday, autumn passe by me
And people hurry on so peacefully
A group aproaches a policeman
He seems so pleased to please them
It's good at least to live and I agree
He seems so pleased at least
And It's so good to live in peace
And sunday, monday years and I agree
While my eyes
Go looking for flying saucers in the sky

I choose no face to look at, choose no way
I just happen to be here and It's ok
Green grass, blue eyes, grey sky, god bless
Silent pain and happiness
I came around to say yes, and I say
While my eyes
Go looking for flying saucers in the sky

I'm surprised no one's mentioned this one:

BENSON ARIZONA

A million suns shine down but I see only one;
When I think I'm over you, I find I've just begun
The years move faster than the days - there's no warmth in the light
How I miss those desert skies, your cool touch in the night.

Benson, Arizona, blew warm wind through your hair
My body flies the galaxy, my heart longs to be there
Benson, Arizona, the same stars in the sky
But they seemed so much kinder when we watched them, you and I.
.
Now the years pull us apart, I'm young and now you're old
But you're still in my heart and the memory won't grow cold
I dream of times and spaces I left far behind
Where we spent our last few days - Benson's on my mind.

Written by Bill Taylor (lyrics) and John Carpenter (music) and performed by John Yager (vocals), John Carpenter, Terry Winkless, Tom Wallace and Justice O'Neil (backup musicians) on the soundtrack to the movie "Dark Star" (1974)
