taking the opportunity to put forth my bit of Mudcat knowledge you can use Google Site search to find stuff on mudcat.org

put what you want in quotes -

"search term" site:mudcat.org

As kat says, the super search is down. I assume it went with the problem of yesterday, and you are aware.

Good timing on this announcement. I've noticed the down time this week, but the slowness has also been conspicuous.

I just ran a test (http://www.speedtest.net/) to see if it was me or Mudcat. Appears to be Mudcat.

I PM'd Max when it came back up - He confirmed he was working on it .
So look for the "placed offline by operator" message if you cant get in !

I got a phone call from a Mudcatter last night. He said Mudcat was down Monday and Tuesday mornings. I was gone Monday, but I noticed Tuesday that at about noon Mudcat time (9 AM my time), Mudcat had a "placed offline by operator" message off and on.
Today, I notice that Mudcat is very slow at times.

I e-mailed Max, and he said that Mudcat has been slow or offline because he has been fixing and tweaking things. This process will continue over the next couple of weeks, so don't worry about it.

Try typing & # 9 8 2 9 without the spaces

Ah! Hash codes. I use them a lot for my foreigh language FAQs. see Russian but if you save the page I am not sure it saves all the fancy codes

Not all browsers show all codes.

If you look on several browsers you will get the idea, most of the code I had problems with were in the High Numbers.

I had a problem posting to ONE thread. Nothing I could do would work. I posted to other threads just fine. Then, a few hours later, I switched browsers and was able to do the post that wouldn't take.

Today, I made a post the didn't 'take'...but no error messages.

In the past week I've been getting a lot of 404 BAD REQUEST notices when I hit the submit button, either in the threads or when sending a PM. Anyone else? I'm not having any problems on any other websites.

Often thread titles appear not to change colour after you have visited them because you return to the threads list by hitting 'Back'. This takes you to the page you have already seen, as it was when you visited it
To see the updated list of threads, go to "Lyrics & knowledge" instead (top left of the screen)!

Cheers
Nigel

Mac users can download the very useful CharacterPal widget
which makes it very easy to find keyboard combinations as well as
html entity codes for all the special characters.

The Villan in his message at 02 Mar 09 - 05:08 AM mentioned threads not changing colour after he visited them.

I notice that the links in the graphic at the top now start with http://mudcat.org while all the other links still start with http://www.mudcat.org like they always did. This could be the explanation. With two different names for the web address the browser thinks it is two different pages even though we know they should be the same, so visited pages (changed colour) will appear as not visited (blue) if you click on the top graphic.

Does this make sense?

In Windows XP, you can click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, right-click Character Map and click Create Shortcut. This will put an icon on your desktop. Character Map has all sorts of neat symbols...the ALT keystrokes are provided for some, others you have to copy and paste.

but it does show as I wished in the SeaMonkey browser....I guess it depends on how your browser is enabled.

If you want to learn about the "symbol" font, and need to post odd stuff, you can do this

I, of course, cheat and use a program to automate that process...HFC

If you are on a PC, and you don't mind a little program, AllChars can allow you to do many symbols and umlauts and fractions easily. After awhile, it is almost instinctive to hit a key combo and insert something.

by hitting 'ctrl', then 1 2 I get...

Hee hee hee - I copy-pasted Giok's three smileys, which on screen shows the smiley and in the preview text box shows the numbers & # 9 7 8 6 but without the spaces. Then I tried typing them manually and got the one in the second row. That must be how to do it on a Mac laptop, which is what I'm using.

Gonna go harvest the other numbers now - but I'll spare you all the fruits of my efforts.
