I was tempted to put this under folklore.
Two weeks ago I started getting a sore throat. Then I got one along with an infection that has gone into first my eyes and sinuses, then ears, back to sinuses...you get the picture. I have had one round of antibiotics which has eliminated all but the sore throat and the ear infection.
This is a nightmare. green and yellow stuff from every orifice. Eyes glued shut with it. Cough Cough Cough. Fever. Infected throat - very colorful and nasty.

Anyone else enjoying this particular strain? I had a flu and pneumonis shot. I take my vitamins.

Antibiotics will not treat a viral or fungal infection. For what antibiotics will treat - amoxycillin is good. I had chronic otitus media and otitus externa as a child, and my ears remain susceptible to infection, 55 years on. I've tried them all. I have also found that for linked dental/ear infections metronidazole is good but do NOT drink alcohol with it - it is chemically related to antabuse and a bad reaction can kill you.

Do NOT settle for a 5 day course. Re-infection is much more likely. Do a 7 or 10 day course (and double the very first dose to get a kick-start) and FINISH THE COURSE.

Ear pain can be absolutely deadly. If you can get Diconal, it will relieve it and it is safe in high doses, but it can be addictive and it has a high street value. It is very hard to get. Do not drive while taking it. Trust me on this.

I am not a doctor, but I have paid my dues when it comes to ear infections (and, indeed, teeth).

How long ago did you have your flu shot? My mom had a very similar experience about a week after she got her flu shot...Dr. told her she had to ride it out. She found some relief with the vaporizer, heating pad, soup and lots of rest.

Feel Better soon.

Mary, if you eat 3 lobster's a day, big lobsters, not those 2 pounders either, for 7 days straight (you don't have to eat them in 1 sitting), you won't have to worry about your throat, eyes, ears or sinuses anymore & you'll be able to keep the costs under $100. Are lobsters still just under $4 a pound? Before starting on this endevor make dam sure the plumbing's in good condition.
Good luck & all my best & sorry you're in such misery

The flu shot last year was a bad deal.
Having worked in the program when I was in the Air Force, it's SUPPOSED to work like this:
'Sentinal' clinics test people with flu-like symptoms including a fever of 101°F or higher.
The samples are sent to the CDC who figure out what strains, what antigen shifts and drifts are going around.
They develop the next year's vaccine based on that.
Last year, they got it wrong and we got nailed with a flu virus that we didn't expect. (They maybe should've named it the 'Spanish Inquisition Flu'?)

Even when the predictions work, there are other types of flu out there. Mary, you sound like you got nailed with one of them. Incidentally, the flu shot doesn't work immediately, so you could be incubating the flu and come down with it before the shot gets your antibodies up to effective levels.

I'm lucky so far. I haven't had the flu since I was a kid. It helps not to hang around with people who have multi-colored snot dripping from various orifices. Yeah, and I was up there two weeks ago! Hope you didn't give Gordon the nasal clap crap!

Get a quart of the cheapest whiskey you can find, something at the US $2.00 per liter is best.

Dissolve in it an entire package of Menthol-Ecalyptus cough drops (Hall's is one such brand).

Promise yourself that if you don't get well by __________ you will have to drink the mixture.

Mary, you don't have to listen to all their crap, do the lobsters, for christsakes, you're in Maine! Dam downeasters, they won't give away any of their secrets, bastards. They want it all for themselves. Next thing you'll be hearing about is chicken soup. How far's the nearest chicken farmer an' how far's the nearest lobsterfolk? See! Many of the folk believe that for medical finds, all you need to do is use what's closest to you, nature will provide what's needed. I'd advise you to cook the lobster in a hole in the ground, line it with hot rocks, once you have the hole lined with the hot rocks toss on the lobsters & then cover them over with fresh, still damp seaweed. The heat from the rocks coming in contact with the moist seaweed will cause the lobster to steam cook. Don't let this valuable steam go to waste, sniff it, really, sniff it like it's the last bit of fresh air you're ever gonna sniff. EVen better if you can get a blanket & cover yourself in a way that you yourself are getting a bit steamed too. The native indians swore by this treatment! That's why they cooked lobsters inside their teepees, they went for the natural thing whole hog. No, I didn't mean you should invite a hog, whole or not under the blanket with you. As for those chickenshits who'd advise you otherwise let them make soup when they're sick, you do lobsta. If after a couple of these treatments you're feeling better you might want to, for faster relief, try adding to on or onto, the sides of the lobsters some fresh clams (DEAD ONES are no good) & some fresh ears of local corn (Indian corn is the best) & try drinking some 'woad', don't do applecider, espically if it's aged. Hey. the pilgrams survived & knew that the Indians weren't nobody's fool. So follow tradition don't be a New Yorker all your life, sniff, become a downeaster, what's Kendall do when he gets under the weather? See, he stays sick doesn't he, he doesn't do this, probably drinks chicken soup, chicken shit. I'm giving you the best advise available, I know this because I have survived much worst & lobster is the only natural thing on earth that'll see you through, Amen, sorry aMan.

Barry

So does codliveroil, just hold on to your nose with 2 fingers or a thumb & 1 finger, I don't really care how you hold on to your nose, just do it & swallow, Ha,Ha,Ha, you know how to do that, don't you? As Bogey said to Bacall, wait wasn't that whistle, sorry swallow anyway? Anyway, you can't get to be a true down-easter, Easter? Did someone say Easter? Sorry You can't become a downeaster if you don't learn to do a lobster, actually that'll even disqualify you from ever even becoming a true New Englander, eating lobster is a must do type of hing, if you don't you'll never ajust to the climate that the rest of us were born into & you'll get sick all the time. A lobster a day'll keep the sniffles away,,,. Clam up & gulp it down, be brave, be a real woman, be a New Englander, be a Downeaster, be a real Mainy-e-ax, you want ta wine, go light some candles & put on some soft music, you want to be cured go do a lobster, "shuck an' swallow" (kinda like 'rock & roll') a raw oyster & shove a pearl up ya nose, lay down in a stream of steamin seaweed & pull the blanket over ya face & squeeze the eyes out of an octupus' head & snort the black ink & you'll feel 100% better. You'll also get into the Guiness world record book as an aside & 100's of forelorn lobster/fishermen with accordians & banjo's will be trolling for ya. At least you be rid of the sniffles.

Mary, that Lobster thing Barry mentioned is good to a point, but he forgot to tell you it works best when a special friend eats the lobster while you watch.
Do you know anyone who loves lobster?

Didn't Stephen King do a story about this ailment?

I would also recommend garlic...fresh, raw garlic buds. If you mix some pieces of it into some food and eat some parsley afterwards, it's really not that bad.

Neti pot.

From your description there may not be much room at first for water to flow through your sinuses, but if you are tempted by the offer of something that does actually work, a pot full of well-salted warm water in one sinus and out the other (over a sink and breathe through your mouth) is a great way to wash crud out of there. Just be sure you have plenty of salt in the water. (Ask me how I know. . . )

Don't let anyone suggest you can run it in one ear and out the other to clear out ear snot. (I've never even heard of that, let alone seen it, and won't offer any suggestions.) But the sinuses can be soothed with the good ol' neti pot. And eat chicken soup. Drink hot herbal tea. And there is a Celestial Seasonings tea called "Throat Soother" (they may have changed the name, but it was that brand) that had stuff like slippery elm bark and it really does help the sore throat.

Get well soon!

This thread not giving me much hope. Developed a cold 2 and half weeks ago. Thought I was getting well this Friday past.

Then 2am Saturday it came back with vengence. Fever (highest)102.4 and convulsive chills and then sweats and then chills again. Been dry heaving since Saturday, because sinus, throat and lungs feel furred up with phlegm and coughing does not dispel it. What little I get up is only clear, frothy, so not infected yet. Panting like a dog, short of breath, severe head and neck ache. Chest muscles and rib cage tired from the coughing and dry heaves, throat raw as well.

GP has cancelled my flu jab twice because I am too unwell to have it. Won't give me antibiotic because 1)there is no sign of infection so it must be viral and 2) if it does eventually go nuclear I am allergic to every - flipping - thing.

My immune system has been zotzed by couple of years chemo for Rheumatoid Arthritis. Think I am in serious trouble here. Going to GP tonight, but s/he notorioulsy reluctant to prescribe anything because of my allergies. I lost my list of meds I am allegic to as well. Now must reconstruct the list from memory at a time when my brain is clearly not funcitoning well.

Let's see can't have any cillins and cephalosporins, aspirin, ibuprofen, sulfa drugs, some decongestants.

Is there a doctor in da house? Think I will start eating the raw onions again. Actually helped a lot at the beginning of the cold.

Garlic.

I'm allergic to penicillin and a LOT of antibiotics, and garlic supplements (back in those days I could get garlic & parsley tabs reasonably cheap -- I took 13 a day and heavied up when I really needed it) have pulled me out of bronchitis and some other nasty infections.

Add more garlic to the chicken soup.

Garlic is good.

Barry - Mary's in enough of a shitty mood right now without forcing lobster down her throat. Trust me, you think she's bad before morning coffee? That would be mild compared to her mood if she had to sniff lobster steam and then eat the little darlings and we live within a ten mile radius, which means that we would get the fallout, as would the rest of the Greater Portland area.

She's finally going to the doctor's today to have a strep test and, hopefully, get some further treatment to help her recover. If necessary I'll cook up some real chicken soup, not the stuff in the cans, and take that round to her to see if that helps. It generally seems to help Kendall and me when we get knocked down by the dreaded lurgy.

Virginia Tam - Yuk.I am allergic o penicillen but can tolerate almost everything else. Fluids. Rest. And a doctor.

Linn - I simply can not handle garlic. It makes me sick.Small amounts in something like pesto (Jeri's pesto) are fine. Cloves of it gag me and sicken me for 24 hours. Gross.

Doctor will see me tomorrow morning. She refused to renew the prescription without seeing me. Fair enough. My throat and ear are still infected.

Does anyone remember The Life of Riley, with Wm. Bendix?
He had a friend named "Digger" O'Dell, the friendly undertaker. He said, "I'll be the last to let you down, Riley"

Seriously, these bugs are getting stronger all the time. Too many anti biotics taken by people who stopped taking them too soon. All that does is allow the survivors to evolve. Now, they are immune to most anti biotics.

Mary here is the real reason for your feelings just change the country :)

I'm TIRED

Yes I'm tired.

For some time now I've been blaming it on advancing age, poor blood, lack of vitamins, air pollution, the ozone hole, saccharin, obesity, dieting, foot odour, yellow wax build-up in the ear, the after effects of ever-lengthening long hikes, and other maladies that make one wonder if life is really worth living.

But I found out that it ain't any of the above.

I'm tired because I'm overworked!

The population of the country (Ireland) is 4 million.
1 million are retired.
That leaves 3 million to do 'the work'.
There are 1 million are too young, or in school and college.
That leaves 2 million to do 'the work'.
750,000 are unemployed or staying at home, and 250,000 are directly employed by the government.
That leaves 1 million to do 'the work'.
200,000 are in the armed or security forces, 200,000 are employed by County Councils, leaving 600,000 to do 'the work'.
There are 420,000 people in hospitals, and 179,000 in prison.

That leaves 2 people to do 'the work'.

You and me!

I've had recurring eye infection since last winter. This time I not only got the antibiotic eyedrops, I've been following advice I found re demodex living in the eyelashes and tea tree oil to kill them. You have to be careful about diluting the tea tree oil enough to not burn the eyes. I added few drops to a jar of eye makeup remover pads and use that to scrub eyelids and eyebrows before bedtime. I use stronger tea tree oil on cotton on the rest of the face. It seems to be helping.

If lobsters are too disgusting, just boil up a sack of their little cousins, the crawfish.

Be sure to throw plenty of whole garlic cloves and little round potatoes into the pot, and of course a healthy dose of hot sauce (cayenne pepper).

When the mudbugs are fully cooked, dump in a few pounds of frozen corn-on-the-cob to bring the temperature down quickly. Once the heat-exchange has stabilized, the corn will be nicely done ~ crisp, not boiled down to a soggy mess (which is what happens if you include the corn too early, along with the garlic and taters).

Of course, this kind of crawfish boil is feasible only in season (springtime) and ideally only is south Louisiana. I sure hope you're over your illness by then!

For now, the garlic and cayenne, without shellfish, will have to suffice.

If you want, you can direct the inhaler via a toilet paper roll (the core, not the whole thing). Exhale as completely as possible, put one end of the roll in your mouth and put the inhaler in the other end. Trigger the inhaler (push down on the ones I have) and at the same time inhale for a count of 6 done at medium speed. Hold your breath for another 6 count, and exhale for a 6 count.

You might also be able to get a cardboard tube from the doctor.

Kendall, you come out here to Idaho and I'll treat YOU to a genuine freshwater lobster feed. Not many people know that there is a species of freshwater lobster indigenous to Idaho and specifically to the Snake River. These lobsters (Homarus Americanus Idahoensis) have a somewhat sweeter taste than those found in the Atlantic which is probably due to the use of sugar beet residue as "green fertilizer" on Idaho farms and the subsequent runoff into the lobster-containing streams, rivers, and lakes. They have never been commercially fished, primarily because of the overwhelming popularity of saltwater lobster.

But I can tell you, an Idaho lobster bake with these lobsters, corn on the cob, fresh butter, some Salmon River oysters and clams, and all washed down with Moose Drool or Midnight Satin beer -- dang, THAT'S some fine eatin'!!!

MARY!!!!
Don't eat the chicken soup, it'll past through you like the wind over the ocean. If you can't do lobster try the next best thing, eat stewed bats. I know they're dying off everywhere but if you act fast you'll be able to trap a couple. You put them in a stew, just like an Irish stew but instead of rat meat you use bat meat. They're harded to trap than rats & smarter too so you can't just set out some cheese & put it on one of those spring things that breaks their necks. You got to set up a misqutos fly slam. You get about 2 dozen on the local buzzards & hang them by gluing them in a ball to the end of a light line of thin gauge wire, use lots of glue & set it up at dusk. When the bat striks the ball og glued misquotes & is stunned because it gets stopped in mid air you slam it with a bat. This is called the bat act. Well, dewing the thing drop it in the stew & there you go. Boil for 3 hrs & eat hot.
Best of luck, hope your ears have stopped ringing
Barry

Yesterday was end of week 4 with this mess. The Doxycyclin seems to be working, coughing less, sleeping more. Right ear still full. Evening time my kidneys hurt which makes me think UTI. What fun.

I think the worst has been I have been home from work all week and have not lifted one finger to housework. I have Mudcatted, Googled and practised mandolin. God the guilt.

Tsk tsk. A truckload of ironing awaits.

Ha ha!! I lie. The worse is I have missed 3 folk sessions in the last month. Sod the ironing.

I too have the kidney hurt and a blocked ear. It is really a problem at work where I have to see people's mouths to understand what they are saying. Hoping the antibiotics knock it all out of me. 11 days to go.

Reminder to all: Despite cajoling I did not attend a recent house concert or Thanksgiving dinner rather than risk infecting you.15 minutes in the car with Jacqui shouldn't have done it.

Subject: Lyr Add: I Got it From Agnes
From: Jeri
Date: 05 Dec 08 - 08:43 AM

I had a nice dinner at Acorns last night, courtesy of Curbat Mudgeoness (thank you), but mainly I just wanted to state that I am not sick. I do not have sniffilis and I feel GREAT. WOOHOO!!! I truly hope you feel better soon so you can experience the toxic-snot-free existence and joyful nasal inhalation that I now do.

Somehow, this song never got added here (unless it's hiding somewhere). I found it with the Wayback Machine and plucked in its entirety (with some HTML editing) from here.

I Got It From Agnes (1952)

This song was written by Tom in 1952, and performed by him throughout the 1950's, but he never included it on an album because he considered it too risqué at the time. In 1980, he revised it for inclusion in the stage revue of his songs called Tomfoolery, and notes that, although the revision made it naughtier, it seems fairly innocent by today's standards. The lyrics given here are from the revised Tomfoolery version. A studio version of this song recorded in 1996 can be found on the album Songs & More Songs by Tom Lehrer, available from Rhino Records.

I love my friends, and they love me,
We're just as close as we can be.
And just because we really care,
Whatever we get, we share!

I got it from Agnes,
She got it from Jim.
We all agree it must have been
Louise who gave it to him.

She got it from Harry,
Who got it from Marie,
And everybody knows that Marie
Got it from me.

Giles got it from Daphne,
She got it from Joan,
Who picked it up in County Cork,
A-kissin' the Blarney Stone.

Pierre gave it to Sheila,
Who must have brought it there.
He got it from Francois and Jacques,
Haha, Lucky Pierre!

Max got it from Edith,
Who gets it every spring.
She got it from her Daddy,
Who just gives her everything.

She then gave it to Daniel,
Whose spaniel has it now.
Our dentist even got it,
And we're still wondering how.

Ah, but I got it from Agnes,
Or maybe it was Sue,
Or Millie or Billie or Gillie or Willie,
It doesn't matter who.

It might have been at the club,
Or at the pub, or in the loo,
And if you will be my friend,
Then I might...(Mind you, I said "might")...
Give it to you!

Notes

Lehrer Comments:  "I Got it From Agnes was written in 1952. Originally it was I Got it From Sally. I used to sing that in nightclubs, but I didn't put it on records because I didn't want to be identified with so-called 'party records' like those by Ruth Wallis, Rusty Warren, Redd Foxx. I didn't want to be in that bin. When Cameron Mackintosh asked if there was anything else in the trunk that they could use for Tomfoolery, I polished
it up, wrote a new verse, and made it more like a British music-hall song. Of course, that was all before anybody had heard of AIDS." --1996 Interview

Hi Sinsull,

I had much the same as you for a couple of months. The ears were the worst part. Antibiotics stopped the sinus headache but had no effect at all on the blocked ears. It felt like my head was full of glue.

A few people at work are also suffering from the blocked ears, among other symptoms.

I went and bought some over-the-counter nasal spray for hayfever and hey (hay) presto! the blocked ears started to unblock. Two months of blocked ears was hell. The cure was quick and effective. The brand I bought is called Beconase (in Oz). It works by reducing inflammation and I think that was the problem because I had very little of the runny-nose symptoms. In your case - the Green Goo Syndrome - maybe it would not help but for me it was little short of a miracle.

Maybe worth a try.

Helen

I wish you the Oz cure: tea, sympathy, and eucalyptus oil steam inhalations (antiseptic properties in eucalyptus, and helps to unblock everything nasal-related)

Okay, that does it. Here are some cures from my home town, warranted genuine and copied from "Folk-Lore of Adams County, Illinois" (NY: Alma Eigens Hyatt Foundation, 1935), p. 241ff:

4983. Heat cow manure in sweet milk, then place this in a bag and tie it against the ear for earache.

4986. Cure earache by keeping the ear filled with goose grease.

4995. Fry a piece of rabbit fat and put one drop of the grease in the ear for earache.

4999. As an earache remedy, use skunk oil.

5006. A little urine rubbed in the ear will cure earache.

5010. Stop a girl's earache by inserting into her ear a few drops of urine from a boy.

Now, if these don't do it let me know. There are more cures to try.

Mary,
Lobsters disgust me, Barry.

For Peter Gray, and Somers too, though certainly in trade,
Were properly particular about the friends they made;
And somehow thus they settled it without a word of mouth --
That Gray should take the northern half, while Somers took the South.

On Peter's portion oysters grew -- a delicacy rare,
But oysters were a delicacy Peter couldn't bear,
On Somers' side was turtle, on the shingle lying thick,
Which Somers couldn't eat, because it always made him sick.

Gray gnashed his teeth with envy as he saw a mighty store,
Of turtle unmolested on his fellow-creature's shore.
The oysters at his feet aside impatiently he shoved,
For turtle and his mother were the only things he loved.

From W S Gilbert's 'Etiquette'

Not quite lobsters, & It doesn't help the symptoms, but it may raise a smile.

Anyway, the would be suitor bribes a local to put an earwig in the husband's ear while he sleeps. This is a special earwig. It eats its way through your brain in a straight path. By the time it comes out the other ear, you're dead.

Of course the earwig gets put in the wrong ear and the Lotherio ends up screaming in pain for a few weeks as this thing chomps its way through his brain. BUT he survives and the earwig comes out the other side.

No one is celebrating his recovery and he thinks he is up on a attepted murder charges but the sad truth is "It was a female and she laid her eggs in your brain. They will hatch in a day or two and..."

That might work.

I almost never get sick but I had a terrible chest cold that started December 15th or so and continued until around December 28th. I just couldn't seem to shake it - took three days off from work, stayed in bed, but the coughing was awful. I think my son brought it when he came to visit from California. My other son caught the cold and also developed an opportunistic ear infection, which he's still dealing with although it seems to be improving. The only good thing about being sick is it makes you so appreciative of feeling normal when it goes away!

Everybody together now .... SHUT UP AMOS!

This thing first started on 13 November. I actually felt well and normal Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and a few days following Boxing day.

Then it crept back on me. Luckily no fever with this one (so far), but all the other nasty stuff. Speak up Amos... I can't hear you.

I know what the problem is. I was on methotrexate (chemo) for nearly 2 years (a useless attempt to knock down my immune system as treatment for Rheumatoid Arthritis, which did nothing to the RA but made me feel like I had terminal day after syndrome when there had been no night before.... pant, pant, gasp.... so unfair). Stopped chemo in June 08 but my immune system has not recovered.

What makes it worse? I was not informed by my GP that flu vaccine was available until after I fell ill. Still getting reminders to make appointment. Can't get well enough to have the damn jab.

Who says Americans don't get irony! It is heaped upon me and it is gettin damned heavy.
