Gasoline (petrol), we are told, is now at a national US average of $1.99. How come, in Juneau, Alaska, we're still paying more than $3.00? The cheapest price in town that I have found is $3.09 9/10 but most of the stations display $3.19 ranging up to $3.39.

Can't do the sums myself, Noreen- but it does occur to me to wonder how long it takes the average motorist in the UK to use up a tank of fuel? In the US a long commute to work can force tanking up twice a week. A worker living in the suburbs - suburbs that can be 50 miles from the city, ('suburbs' defined according to authorities) may have no other option.

There are communities in the US that are planned to provide housing within the same community as businesses but the concept doen't seem to have taken too firm a hold yet.

It's the lowest now that I have seen it in several years: 78.9 cents a litre in Ontario, Canada. Only thing is, I don't know how to convert that into gallons for comparison to the American prices.

Funny, I'm looking at airfares from Boston to London & back during the summer & it doesn't look like they're dropping the prices any even though when fuel costs went up they added surcharges, now that the costs are down ?????

It's going the wrong way. Gas needs to be more expensive, not less, so that SUV and monster truck driving idiots aren't encouraged, and the auto industry sees the error of its ways.

I want to see prices of $5/gal and up.

I paid $1.899/gal. here in Portland, Oregon yesterday. That's down a dime a gallon from last Sunday and down about 20 cents from 2 or 3 weeks ago.
That's the cheapest price I've found in Portland, and we're about 10 cents a gallon cheaper than Seattle, on average, and about 20 cents a gallon cheaper than San Diego, usually.

I guess I must be the winner here. Thursday $1.749.

There were a couple of stations that the gas-search sites said were a couple of cents lower; but the only ones close were noted as being out of gas. (I think they drop the price when they run out, just to piss off the competition?) The sites show statewide average here at about $1.77.

The reports note that although it's come down a little, diesel is still close to $3 in most parts of the US. It's come down by less (absolute or percentage) than gasoline, so the "spread" is actually increasing.

Kendall, yep, we get the annual Permanent Fund Dividend, which runs from $900 to $1200 per person.

On the other hand, rent for a studio apartment here will run you about $750 + utilities (easily another $150), a one-bedroom unit about $950, a two-bedroom about $1200, a house anywhere from $2000 on up. What are your prices?

In McMinnville, Oregon, comparative rentals don't compute. My sister rents half of a duplex with a full dining room, two bedrooms, an automatic doored garage and a fenced large backyard with a lockable storage shed for $625.00.

Airfare? A Seattle-Juneau round trip costs anywhere from $550 to $625 - three weeks beforehand. A Seattle-Anchorage round trip is just over $200- but that's because there are multiple airlines in Anchorage. We have only one.

An Alaska state ferry trip to Seattle (Bellingham, a half-hour from Seattle) takes three days and costs a walk-on more than $300 one-way, plus food. If you want an onboard cabin it will cost you another $350 on top of your own carcass. If you are not a walk-on but have a car you wish to take along, that will cost another $460 dollars - for a compact car. Costs more for a larger vehicle.

Keep in mind that all these fares are for ONE WAY. If you want to come back, double all the prices; there are no price breaks.

The only thing that makes Juneau, Alaska's prices - and climate - bearable is that we get to live here!

I haven't bought gas for a couple weeks,(we don't drive a whole lot) and it was $2.07 then.... I guess it is a bit better now, though it's always higher here than in the suburbs...or across the river in Virginia. Next weekend we make 4 round-trips to a craft show in Virgina, so I guess we'll fill both the car & the van...

Enjoy...it won't last. (and the oil companies are still making money)

Several stations at $1.649 as of today in central Ohio. Most, even the little places are less than $1.729.

And while I agree we need very few SUV's if any, Karen drives 500 miles a week to work and back so this brief respite is great. WE get a price break from grocery points 30cents this month) so the last tank cost $1.43 a gallon and we'll get 50 cents off next month so we might be getting gas for close to a 1.15 maybe?????   I can dig it!

We average a little over 25 mpg with the Diamante so the difference between 4 bucks and a buck seventy five is roughly $175.00 A MONTH!!! We need the money!

82.5 cents per litre here in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. It's been dropping about .4 to .5 cents everu day.

Some say its due to the dropping price of oil, but our heating oil hasn't shown a corresponding drop.

I believe they have dropped the price of gasoline to encourage us to spend money this Christmas. It will shoot back up again after the holidays.

A-dollar-fifty-nine per gallon around here. We do okay because we dig it up and refine it around here. Doesn't seem fair that Alaska doesn't get the same shake!

Very glad about the new price, hope it will allow us to travel to see family at Christmas. But still grouchy that the high prices put the kibosh on going to the O'Flaherty Retreat this fall. It's all about timing.

Too complicated to work out into something meaningful ($NZ1.49/ltr) but I see crude is 1/3 the price it was 3 weeks ago. Wonder who made all that money? Producers? Shippers? Refiners? Speculators?
Certainly not retailers. They make about $0.2c a litre here.

Here in San Diego CA, it's about $1.99. While refueling yesterday I met a man who had just bought a Hybrid auto. With a big smile, I laughingly asked him if he was mad that he had spent all that money to buy a Hybrid. He snarled and said "NO!" He didn't smile back. Californians have no sense of humor.

Here in W. Ireland, I'm paying €1.10 a litre (about €5 a gallon = about $2) It's a bloody scandal, when oil reached its peak in July, $150 a barrel, we were paying €1.30 a litre so, by that token, as oil's now $50 a barrel, we should only now be paying €0.43 a litre. Somebody/s making an obscene profit in these troubled times!!!!!!

A month ago, here in the Oz New England, it was $1.45 (Aus) per litre ($5.80 per US gallon); it's now come down to $1.22 per litre ($4.88 per US gallon. And, even being careful and limiting the extent (~400km) and style (gentle) of my driving I still get through about 45 litres/week in the Subaru; another 7000km and it will have clocked up the half million.

Cheers, Rowan

I've just done the sums. Petrol costs $5.17 per US gallon today. A 50 mile daily commute is not uncommon in the UK. But 70-odd per cent of that is tax, and the government needs the cash so much more than we do.

Eh! No Jim 5 euros = $6.49.

And the "obscene" profit on the European side of the pond normally goes to the Government in the shape of tax. Additionally just because the price of crude oil per barrel drops today, that does not reflect the price paid for the refined oil that you are pouring into your car at the pump that could have bought at $147 per barrel depending on where you are.

Move to Britain. This recent slump in prices has brought petrol down to around 90p a litre, i.e. $6.16/US gal.

For other Brits' benefit, the $2 that's been quoted upthread works out at 29p a litre. Remember when that was how much it cost? No, me neither (although I can remember my Dad filling up at 6/8d per gallon, so the price must have passed through the 29p/litre mark some time in between).

Lowest price I've seen in New Orleans so far is $1.59. I filled up on Monday for $1.66, lowest available that day; it's been falling every day.

We normally have prices a few cents below the national average.

The very lowest prices can be found in Baytown TX at I-10 Exit 789. We've made quite a few trips between New Orleans and Austin TX over the past couple of years, and the four large truck-stop/gas-stations at that interchange have always offered the very lowest prices along the route or anywhere in the region, generally at least 10 cents below the best New Orleans prices. If that's holding true today, they might be down to a buck-and-a-half or a little less at 789.

Baytown is just east of Houston and home to gigantic refineries; I'm guessing that the proximity to the source is part of the explanation for low gas prices there, and the easily-remembered exit number (7-8-9) might have something to do with why that one particular spot offers the lowest of low prices.

As I understand it, the British government has jacked the price of diesel up above petrol to discourage people from buying diesel vehicles. They are dirty, and they pollute the air much worse than petrol burners.
They also collect more taxes on the higher priced fuel.I guess that helps to pay for the lung problems that the diesel fuel creates. Someone has to pay for that "free" national health care you enjoy. :-)

In my part of the world, there are scores of fuel stations all competing for my money, so a quick check on the computer will tell me where the lowest fuel price is to be found, and that's where I go.
Price fixing is illegal here, so they either compete or go under.

Something for Kendall

"Motor Vehicle Emission Controls: Fuel Types

Introduction
In recent years concern about exhaust emissions from motor vehicles has been increasing. To combat this, the motor industry has been promoting the diesel car as cleaner than petrol cars, due to their greater fuel economy and reduced maintenance requirements. However, diesel cars have very different emission characteristics, and an increase in diesel cars at the expense of petrol cars could have important implications on urban air quality, smog formation, global warming and other environmental issues. Emissions of lead are falling due to the banning of leaded fuel in the UK and many other countries. Recently there has been much debate about which fuel, diesel or petrol, is the cleanest in terms of exhaust emissions. Unfortunately there is no clear answer due to the lack of measurements of emissions from both types of fuel, although data from track tests and dynamometers have shown certain trends.

Emissions from Petrol Vehicles

Emissions from petrol cars have been dramatically reduced by the introduction of catalytic converters, which oxidise pollutants such as CO to less harmful gases such as CO2. When compared to petrol cars without catalysts, catalyst cars have much lower CO, HC and NOx emissions, at the expense of CO2 emissions, which increase due to the oxidation of carbon monoxide to CO2. As a consequence of this, a catalyst car will also use slightly more fuel and become less efficient. However, despite these improvements, petrol cars with catalysts still produce more CO and HC than diesel cars, although exhaust emissions of NOx and particulates are much lower than diesel cars. In fact particulate emissions from petrol cars are so low that they are not routinely measured.

Emissions from Diesel Vehicles

Diesel fuel contains more energy per litre than petrol and coupled with the fact that diesel engines are more efficient than petrol engines, diesel cars are more efficient to run. Diesel fuel contains no lead and emissions of the regulated pollutants (carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides) are lower than those from petrol cars without a catalyst. However, when compared to petrol cars with a catalyst, diesels have higher emissions of NOx and much higher emissions of particulate matter.

Cold Start Emissions

Emissions from cars are greatest when an engine is cold. On a cold day a petrol car may take up to 10km to warm up and operate at maximum efficiency; a diesel car may only take 5km. Consequently, diesel cars produce less unburned fuel during a cold start, which will result in lower emissions of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons. Diesel cars could make a significant impact on air quality in urban areas where most cold starts occur, especially when it is considered that a catalyst on a petrol car would take several minutes to reach its operating temperature. Overall, diesel cars emit less hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and lead pollution than petrol cars, but produce more noxious gases and significantly more particulates.

Emissions for Road Vehicles (per vehicle kilometre)

Vehicles - Carbon monoxide - Hydro-carbons - Oxides of nitrogen - Particulate matter - Carbon dioxide
Petrol car without a catalyst* - 100 - 100 - 100 - 0 - 100
Petrol cars with a catalyst - 42 - 19 - 23 - 0 - 100
Diesel cars without a catalyst - 2 - 3 - 31 - 100 - 85

* Petrol cars without catalysts have been given a relative value of 100 for comparison

Despite much debate over which car, petrol or diesel, is cleaner, weighing up the advantages and disadvantages is not easy. For example, diesel cars have been promoted, as they produce less CO and HC on average when compared to petrol cars, and they have greater fuel economy producing less CO2 per km. However recent health concerns about particulate matter have given diesels a less environmentally-friendly image, as have the higher emissions of nitrogen oxides compared with petrol cars. As a comparison, petrol cars produce virtually no particulate matter, take longer to warm up, produce more carbon dioxide per mile on average, and emissions of the regulated pollutants are higher.

Cleaner Petrol and Diesel

A method of pollution reduction currently being utilised involves the use of cleaner petrol and diesel. It is cheaper to improve conventional fuels than to use many of the alternatives and no investment is needed for new storage tanks and service stations. Ultra low sulphur petrol is now widely available in the UK.

Alternative Fuels

To replace pollutant fuels (petrol and diesel), alternative fuels are currently being developed. Those put forward as alternatives to petrol and conventional diesel include: compressed natural gas (CNG); liquefied petroleum gas (LPG); city diesel; hydrogen; alcohol fuels; and battery operated vehicles.

LPG & CNG

On a cycle representing congested urban traffic, both LPG and CNG outperform petrol powered vehicles on emissions of carbon monoxide (CO). Indeed, emissions of CO from CNG powered vehicles are of the same order as those emitted by diesel vehicles. However, emissions of total hydrocarbons (THC) from CNG vehicles are relatively high because of methane, the major component of natural gas. Although methane is a small contributor to the formation of low level ozone it is a major factor in global warming. Emissions of NOx and particulates from both LPG and CNG powered vehicles are significantly lower than those from diesel vehicles. Moreover, emissions of NOx from CNG vehicles are half those from equivalent petrol engined vehicles. A recent study using a small delivery van fitted with a three way catalyst and capable of switching between CNG and petrol, showed that on a modified EU emission test cycle, emissions of CO, non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHC) and NOx were 76%, 88% and 83% respectively lower with CNG than with petrol. Using data from other studies CNG also compares favourably with emissions from equivalent sized diesel-engined vehicles.

City Diesel

City diesel is a petroleum based lower emission diesel developed in Sweden but now available in many European Countries including the UK. Exhaust emissions from vehicles fuelled with city diesel compare favourably with exhaust emissions from equivalent vehicles fuelled with conventional diesel. The main benefit of city diesel is that its combustion reduces particulate emissions by 34 - 84% depending on engine type, duty cycle, test basis and type of particulate measured. An additional benefit of city diesel is that it is a low sulphur fuel, which is necessary for the optimum running of oxidation catalytic converters.

Conclusion

To produce a cleaner environment for all to live and work in, the development of alternative, cleaner fuels is essential. To encourage the use of the fuels, competitive prices combined with good marketing techniques are required.

Of course he does - his unworkable and unsustainable system of irresponsible capitalist greed has caused a worldwide economic slowdown, possibly a global recession. The resulting drop in oil prices as energy demand drops in the face of financial uncertainty has, at least seen the price come down to a more reasonable level.

Well as 93% of all those "poor oil companies" are "National Oil Companies", i.e owned by the state, that would mean that the hugh profits go towards the following:

- Future energy research and development, and exploration

RUNNING ON EMPTY?

Don't blame the oil companies

By Henry Lee Published: July 24, 2008

If you listen to many elected officials and political pundits, you might think oil companies or speculators are to blame for high oil prices. The evidence does not support such a verdict.

It is true that some major oil companies have made huge profits, but this does not mean that they are responsible for the price of oil. When a consumer buys a gallon of oil, the company benefiting is more likely to be the national oil company of Saudi Arabia, Nigeria or Venezuela rather than Chevron, Shell or Exxon. About 86 percent of the world's oil is produced by state-owned oil companies. The reality is that the major U.S. oil companies are price takers: Their prices are set by the world market where they contribute smaller and smaller percentages of the world's production.

If the major oil companies are not to blame, what about the speculators? There is little doubt that the number of speculators participating in the marketplace has grown exponentially and that they are responsible in some part for both the speed and magnitude of the recent increases in world oil. Who are these speculators? They are oil-consuming companies, like airlines, that fear prices may go still higher. They are oil-producing companies that fear that the price may fall precipitously and thus "sell" into the futures market. They are brokerage firms and banks that are trying to protect their assets in a market where inflation fears are rising and the value of the dollar is declining. Almost certainly there are some bad actors among the hundreds of speculators, but most are not Enron clones ripping off consumers. They are companies and individuals trying to protect their assets.

So, why are oil prices so high? The answer is simple: Demand is high and supply is low.

Between 1982 and 2002, oil prices were low. Gasoline prices more than doubled between 2002 and 2007, and instead of cutting back, Americans drove more and continued to buy large gas-guzzling vehicles. Part of the reason was that they were a lot wealthier than they were in the 1980s. Thus their change in incomes over the past 30 years was dramatically greater than changes in the value of their oil purchases. With gas at $4.10 a gallon, this situation is finally shifting, and consumers are forced to allocate an ever-growing proportion of their incomes for fuel.

Finally, oil consumption in countries such as China grew faster than GDP. Since the GDP was increasing at rates more than 9 percent per year, China's oil demand was skyrocketing, not just for gasoline to power cars and trucks but for diesel oil to run thousands of small electric generators.

Why didn't supply keep up with the demand growth? In 2004 and 2005, some pundits were predicting that 10 million to 15 million barrels of new oil would come on stream by 2010. Since then, only about 1.5 million barrels of non-OPEC new oil has come onto the market. Ironically, part of this problem is that oil supplies are controlled by state national oil companies that make investment decisions based on criteria that are often less commercial than those used by the major oil companies that we like to berate.

No one knows whether prices will continue to rise, but there are three truths worth considering. Oil prices are volatile, which means that prices that go up rapidly can go down rapidly. The best way to reduce prices is to reduce the rate of demand growth, and there are signs that this is finally beginning to happen. Finally, speculators who bid the price up can also bid the price down, but they will only do this if they believe that the fundamentals are shifting.

If people want lower gasoline prices, they should first identify the true culprits: unsustainable rates of consumption growth and a world oil supply that is unlikely to meet the forecasted consumption levels.

There is a slight difference between the figures that Teribus and I used. The 93% figurehe used refers to known oil reserves contolled by state-owned oil companies. Saudi Arabia (state-owned) has approximately 10 times the known reserves of Exxon-Mobil, the largest privately-owned oil company.

The 86% figure I used refers to the daily production of cude oil. This statement is for clarification purposes only as Teribus deals in fact, not opinion. Everyone here can learn a lot by reading his posts.

Oh, poo, pdq. There is a huge difference between a country that has vast reserves of oil and the company that exploits it. One is an entity that is open to bid, the other is an entity that bids.

1.479 at a local knockdown station.
For those who were wondering, a barrel of crude oil is 42 gallons. It is not a 55 gallon drum. When you do your price guesstimates, base your calculations on that.

CDN$1.282/litre (X 1.0467 = US$1.342/litre) for regular which now has 10% ethanol.

We have three grades and I will have to buy the top grade for my lawn mower, snow blower and generator. I have read that ethanol may void some warranties, that it does some harm to larger engines as well, that it has a short shelf life even if a stailizer is used, etcetera, but I dunno if any of it is true,

Spaw... is this ethanol a good/bad thing?

Oh, in case ya wanna do some converting...

USG = 3.785 litres   IMPG = 4.546 litres

In the UK it is about £6.30p per gallon. Not sure about the current exchange rate, but I would think in US terms about just under $8.00 a gallon.

The current bubble is speculation on the part of those playing the commodities market. It should go down again fairly soon.

North Africa esp. Libya produces only about 2 percent of crude, and Saudi and other sources took up the slack. Never a problem, except perhaps to Italy and France in the short term.

Europe adjusted to much higher gasoline price years ago. Gas for my rental cars over there was about double American rate years ago, and the disparity hasn't changed.

The cheapest I can get diesel for is £1-36.9/litre at Asda, but it's a 15 mile trip away. There is a local garage on the A1 just a couple of miles away at £1-43.9/litre. (Which I would only pay if I had to).

I live in North Northumberland. It's agood job I go up to Berwick Upon Tweed (where Asda is) fairly often. However, I have a 5p/litre money off voucher for Morrison's at Berwick, so that'll help on the next fill up. I have a 17 gallon fuel tank, and it gets a bit expensive!

I paid US$4.06/gallon (with the supermarket's 3-cent-per-gallon discount) in Long Beach, California today, and US$3.79 off the highway in Tonopah, Arizona, 5 hours later. If I'd gone another mile east, I could have paid $3.69. In Tucson it's $3.49.

At $8 a gallon I don't know if I could afford this long-distance marriage. Bad enough as it is. (When we started, airfares were low, though gas got as high or higher in the summer of '08.) 2 more years to go.

I know of a Canadian city in which prices per litre vary by $0.11 among the retailers. Here in New Brunswick, prices are "regulated" and may only be changed Wednesday at at midnight. Currently, the maximum price is CDN$1.305 and most stations sell at approximatey $1.28 to $1.29. That will rise tonight.

Average prices in Canada have risen 25% since October and the average family is paying $950 more per year. In October, the price here was $0.99.
