From: tellison@crosslink.net

Greetings all. Can anyone tell me the title or where I can find the lyrics for a song that goes something like this?

[Chorus]
Always marry an ugly girl. They're the only kind.
That'll never leave you and if they do, you won't mind.

One of the verses starts kinda like.
"My brother married an ugly girl, ugly as can be"...

I heard this at a bluegrass show out near Lynchburg, VA last year.

Thanks,

Tim Ellison

I got excited when I saw this thread; I thought it might refer to the Calypso song that metamorphed into an R & B song. I have several versions including a duet, answer song, called Ugly Woman, Pretty Woman. Alas, not! Sorry I have no info on the bluegrass song.---John

I can tell you about my personal experience: I lived on a mini farm about 20 years ago. I milked goats and sold the milk. One of my best customers came up to the barn one day complaining about the girl his son was going to marry. He looked at me and sighed, and said that he wished his son was marrying me! He said "you're strong, healthy, not afraid to work, and you're smart. It's better than being pretty."

I was dumbfounded and uttered no more than a small laugh. Had I been complimented or told that I was ugly? I'll never forget it.

From: Steve Latimer

I have heard the song that you are referring to, but don't know who did it. It reminds me of the following gem by Mr. Robert Zimmerman

UGLIEST GIRL IN THE WORLD

Words and Music by Bob Dylan and Robert Hunter
1987 Special Rider Music and Ice Nine Pub. Co. Inc

The woman that I love she got a hook in her nose
her eyebrows meet, she wears second hand clothes
She speaks with a stutter and she walks with a hop
I don't know why I love her but I just can't stop

You know I love her
Yeah I love her
I'm in love with the Ugliest Girl in the World

If I ever lose her I will go insane
I go half crazy when she calls my name
When she says babababababy I l-l-love you
There ain't nothing in the world that I wouldn't do

You know I love her
Yeah I love her
I'm in love with the Ugliest Girl in the World

The woman that I love she got two flat feet
Her knees knock together walking down the street
She cracks her knuckles and she snores in bed
She ain't much to look at but like I said

You know I love her
Yeah I love her
I'm in love with the Ugliest Girl in the World

I don't mean to say that she got nothing goin'
She got a weird sense of humor that's all her own
When I get low she sets me on my feet
Got a five inch smile but her breath is sweet

You know I love her
Yeah I love her
I'm in love with the Ugliest Girl in the World

The woman that I love she a got a prizefighter nose
Cauliflower ears and a run in her hose
She speaks with a stutter and she walks with a hop
I don't know why I love her but I just can't stop

^^

Hey, Margarita, There is an Anglo/Russian joke that was told to me by a Doukhobor friend who "grew up on the farm"; to wit (spoken in a slow, Anglo/Russian accent to a young man with regard to the speaker's daughter):

"She's not much for look at but good for push plough!"

Yeah, and for nursing babies! If my feet were any shorter I'd probably fall on my face. Your bosom buddy,

The only ones I've ever heard do that song were the Giesenslaw (sp?) Brothers. I used to have it on tape but can't find it anymore.

Didn't Belafonte sing a song about "Always marry a woman who is uglier than you"?

I have a fairly extensive collection of Belafonte thru the 60s and don't recall him singing it. He did sing about an ugly man, "Mama, Look a Bubu". My sister, ten years younger than I, used to go around the house pointing at her brothers, "Bubu, Bubu", and giggle.---John

If you want to be happy and have a good life Never make a pretty woman your wife...

Man Smart, Woman Smarter

I'll try to unearth the lyric.

Thought I'd mention one of my favorite old Cruzian Quadrilles, Jane, Jane, Jane, that says:

A face like a funnel
and her nose hole like a tunnel
but oh, I love her so.

verse in an old song..

"Went to see my girl last night,
First time I ever saw her in the light..
She was bow-legged, cross-eyed, knock-kneed, too
She could look at New York and see Kalamazoo."

It's a small world!

Just last Sunday, at a folk music group I attend here in Indiana, a guy sang this "Always marry an ugly girl" song. I don't know his name, and won't see him for another month. I intend to try to get this from him. I don't want to make a promise, but if I think of it I will post it.
