I hope someone can help me. My father's birthday is approaching and I would like to get him a song book from his childhood.

All he can remember is it had a Yellow cover and contained many favorite songs that the whole family sang together.

One song included the lyrics " seven Macedonians in full battle array." Can you tell me anything about the book or just the song?

Sounds to me as though it might have been Song Fest, compiled by Dick (?) and Ruth (?) Best, and published through the Collegiate Outing Club Association. I don't know whether or not it's still available. Greenhaus can help us with this one, I'm sure.

I'll bet it was Song Fest. I don't think it's still in print, but I see it often in used-book stores. I saw a tattered copy today at the used bookstore at 32nd and Lowell in Denver. It would be easy to find it at www.bookfinder.com
The "Macedonians" song has been mentioned in our forum before - do a forum search for macedon under "subject" (the forum "body search" isn't working). If you're lazy, Click here.

I believe it was Songfest--sadly, my copy disintegrated a while back. If anyone finds a copy, please pick it up for me; I think it was a fine collection.

www.bookfinder.com didn't show ANY copies of the Best's book this evening. You can check back again in hours or days or weeks and see if things have changed. But if talkard(Rachel) is in a hurry, maybe Joe had better e-mail her the name and phone number of that bookstore in Denver.

The book Song Fest was edited by Dick and Beth Best and printed by the [Inter]collegiate Outing Club Association. And you're right, they seem to disintegrate. A dear friend gave me a copy that someone took all the loose pages and put them in plastic sleeves in a three ring binder. So I looked through it for "Seven Macedonians in full battle array" but no luck. A title sure would help. It may still be in the book. I looked through the title index and first lines, then leafed through the pages and browsed likely song contents. I well may have missed it. Another place to look for a copy of Song Fest is the Advanced Book Exchange. (www.abebooks.com)

I looked through a copy of Song Fest today, and couldn't find the Macedonian song. One very distinctive thing about Song Fest is that it has the tune all in one line, above the lyrics, and then the lyrics are printed out as text. Rachel, can you tell us anything else about the book, or tell us other songs you remember from it? If you give us engough of a description, somebody here will be able to come up with a title for you.

Is there a JoeClone who can fix the above to tell people that the book has the tune all in one line? Thanks muchly. Dick, I think I have an extra copy of Song Fest I can send you as a guilt offering for the CD set that was sent to me when it should have been sent to you a few years back. Send me a personal message with your snail mail address, so I'm sure the address I have is right.

Joe- Personal messages don't seem to be working, and I don't have your E-Mail address, so...

dick greenhaus 28 Powell St. Greenwich, CT 06831

ALSO, since (as I recall) you were bemoaning the lack of a Windows interface for the DT, take a look at:
www.tabbytail.freeserve.co.uk/donkey.htm

I've contacted them to see if we can provide it at this site. While I'm not a Windoze enthusiast, this program does make it easier to print out files and adjust font size, which is a help since most new printers are reluctant to work from DOS programs. Its major drawback is that it doesn't highlight the search string when it locates a song. Also please note that it's specific to thge October 1998 edition of the DT; the Spring 1999 version is now in Max's hands, so some updating will be required.

I picked up my old copy of dick & Beth Best's _Sonfest_ back in 1959 when I was a student at the U. of Illinois in Champaign. It was a nice collection & Taught myself to play guitar using those simple songs and arrangements found therein. I think I gave my copy of that old yellow volume to Dan Keding when we were moving recently.

I've also got a RED copy---an earlier edition (illustrated by Eileen Chandler. It does say Intercolegiate Outing Club Association on the cover, but it was published by Oliver Durrell, Inc.
257 Fourth Avenue
New York, 10, New York
date of publication: 1948

Peface is signed by Will Brown, Dartmouth '37
Gerry Richmond, Brown '36
Dick and Beth Best, Cornell '44 and Radcliffe '47

The book looks typed on a typewriter and then mimeographed. Has nice illustrations. Melody lines too with chord indications (mostly 3 per song). A quick perusal did not turn up the song you're looking for.

I would like to thank you all. With your help, I have located a copy of this book and it is now on its way. I should have it in plenty of time for my dad's birthday and I am sure it will be a big surprise.

Thank you all again.

There are a lot of differences between editions in Song Fest. I've got the 1948 and 1955 editions, and oh, my the verses of things we never learned in Girl Scouts!

Subject: Song Fest - how many editions?
From: Joe Offer
Date: 26 Aug 00 - 01:09 AM

As many of you may know, my name is Joe Offer and I have a serious songbook addiction. I sometimes reach plateaus where I feel satisfied, and very proud of my collection and the work I did to accumulate it. Then somebody comes and bursts my bubble.
I was quite pleased that I had both the original 1948 AND the 1955 editions of Song Fest, edited by Dick and Beth Best. Well, tonight Troll sent me a message, telling me he was quite sure there was a New Song Fest published in in the 1960's. He thinks it has the song "Fascinatin' Bitch" in it. Troll says he had two copies of this book, but he lent both out and they were never returned. So, in response, he has to mess with MY mind. Now I'm really worried, and may have to spend day and night searching for yet another edition of this book.
I wonder if I could ask you all to check your copies of this book and determine if there truly is another edition. Here is the information on the two books I have:
  • 1955 edition (1958 printing), 160 pages. First song, "Comin' 'Round the Mountain." Last song, "One More River to Cross." Song on Page 100: "Little Brown Jug" and "Here's to Good Old Beer." My cover is green because it's a special edition for the Linde Employees Athletic Association in Tonawanda, NY. The usual color for this edition is kind of a dirty yellow.
  • 1948 edition, 150 numbered pages plus unnumbered index. Firsst song, "IOCA Song" and "Abdullah bulbul Amir." Last song, "A Zulu King." Song on page 100, "Old MacDonald" and "Old Maid." The cover is dark red.
Anybody got something different?
