I am a Kate Rusby FANATIC! I really love all of her work and I am dying to meet more fans! However, a lot of people say that her next album is weaker than the others. They say it's because her husband left her. But I think that such a great artist like Kate cannot go for so long without some producer picking her up. I am optimistic about her future. But I am eager to here from others.

Kate has had personal and family traumas in recent years, as we all know, but I would have said Awkward Annie is up with the best of 'em. Business as usual, she and Joe did a fine job and still some of the best backing musicians going on the album, what more can we want.

Yes, I'm a bloke, it's perfectly normal yer know!

I've always been a fan, and I quite enjoy Awkward Annie. What I have said on here before is, I wish she would go outside the box a little and try something different, new instrumentation, some other musicians, whatever it may be. Now as has been discussed here on another forum, I think the Kinks cover on Annie is in a small way, exactly what I just mentioned-as soon as I heard the electric guitar, I thought, wow, Kate Rusby and an electric guitar. She will always have that voice that will melt you the first time you hear it, and touch you still many years after-at least I know it does for me. I will say this though, she does know all the criticisms levelled against her, so her decision to just keep on with the same basic formula is not done through some kind of absentmindedness. But I have to say, I will still be listening to her no matter what!

All fair comment irishenglish, but as you say, she does what she does because thats what she wants. Electric guitar, Chris Thile, some things changed a little, some things changed a lot in terms of producing the album, not a time for the great unknown perhaps. But if you were recording with Ian Carr and Andy Cutting, where would you start looking for anyone better?

True enough rabbitlegs, and believe me, that was not meant as a slur on Carr, Cutting, Andy Seward, or any of her usual staples. In fact I would quite like to hear the new live band with Anna Massie in it. But different musicians can get different things from you as a performer-maybe even a tempo change. I would love to hear Kate tear it up a little-sing something fast maybe, which you have to admit, she has never done. I guess at the end of the day, my wishes for what she would do are tempered by how much I appreciate her music as it stands now.

I suppose from Kate's point of view Sir Eglamore, The Elvin Knight, The Old Man would be the up tempo stuff, she freely admits she likes the sad stuff though.

Maybe she occasionally knocks out ace of spades in rehearsal or something, gets it out of the system!

I'd like to hear her do a really good duets album. I think her work with Kathryn Roberts was some of the best of her career, and it would be great to see her choosing some interesting vocal partners to noodle with! She has worked with some excellent backing vocalists, but it's not quite the same as singing a two-hander.

BTW, I think young Joseph did a sterling job with the production this time round - and how lovely to hear him singing!

Yeah. I agree with all of you. The Kinks cover was really great! It's a wonderful song. I actually know a whole forum entirely about Kate. Which, I think, is a great idea. She has so many fans, and all so widespread. It's like we never all talk to each other. I actually really love Awkward Annie (the song, not the whole album, although I love the album) That's more on the upbeat side, but even though she sings a lot of tragic ballads, her albums are still really feel good music!

You don't need electric guitar, bass or drums to do something radical or different, in fact you could use those instruments and still come up with something that has the same feel. It is approach, interpretation, mood, dynamics, tempo that makes the difference. Kate managed that with "Stretched out on your grave", an extraordinary song in my opinion.

Hey, a civilized Kate Rusby thread! Woohoo! O frabjous day! :D

On the subject of her upbeat tunes, it's true she tends to stick with slower stuff, but I definitely think she's done some nifty quicker songs. In particular, "The Blind Harper" from Underneath the Stars, and "Hunting the Hare" from the Rusby/Roberts album are two uptempo favorites. And I do agree that sometimes the songs fall into a certain sameyness (as we've noted before) but every album always has at least a gem or two, no matter what. Her duet with Tim O'Brien on "Sleepless" still makes chills run up and down my spine, and the duet with Chris Thile on Awkward Annie is just delicious...their voices together are wonderful. IMHO of course.

"There was a little girl, who had a little curl, right in the middle of her forehead. When she was good she was very, very good...and when she was bad, she was still pretty damned good!" ;)

Anyway, I definitely want to join. What's the secret handshake?

I'm with Ed. I started off an admirer, thought Hourglass was quite a good album. However, I became dis-illusioned with the second album and further disappointed after seeing her at a lacklustre gig with JM and AC - now I know you can't base an opinion on one gig, but I had seen her before. For me, and I stress for me, the sound and approach is two-dimensional in both the arrangments/material and the singing. On the same score I don't expect anyone to share my tastes.

Kate has done well and she has given much pleasure to many people, that's a good thing, isn't it?

Having seen Kate live many times, I'm bored rigid with the silly little professional Yorkshire lass routine. I feel like throwing up whenever I hear it. Treat us like adults Kate, most of us are!

When I saw her in Oxford at what was until recently the Zodiac but now re-named Carling Academy, must be 10 years ago, she was performing by herself, although she had her brother doing the sound. She used a fan that night and very effective it was too.

I think she had one on her piano because she doesn't need a tall stand and my understanding is that the solid fan base is just too large for the venue. I think her brother probably doubled as the white-fan man.

All you KR fans may not be familiar with the version of High Germany she recorded some 10 years ago with Steve Knightly, Phil Beer and Andy Cutting. It's on the Show of Hands album Dark Fields, but its also on Youtube, used in a somewhat different context.

I love the contrast between the male and female voices here and the way they intertwine in the middle of the song. Some beautiful playing as well.
