Fascinating short programme about Jockey Morris (from Birmingham) on Radio 4 this morning 9.30-9.45am. It's in a series called 'Team Spirit' which is investigating the group psychology of various kinds of teams.

Interesting to look at morris from that perspective plus I thought it gave a good flavour of 'the morris' without putting it down.

Worth listening to on Listen Again. (Sorry - not attempting a blue clickey!)

Sue
PS It was followed at 11.30am by Love, Death and the Lady (mentioned on separate thread about Shirley Collins). TWO folk programmes in one morning!

I managed to catch the Jockey Morris programme thanks to the awful traffic on the M25 this morning (every cloud has a silver lining). It was well worth listning to but my only comment would be that if they were using a female reporter why did they send her to a male morris team - if they wanted her to learn the dances then surely a women's or mixed side would have been more appropriate and it would have been a good plug for women's morris.

So that's who it was!
I didn't hear it, but someone told me last night they had heard part of it, and asked did I know who it would be, from Birmingham!

(She must think there's only one side in each area!)

Andrea - in Yorkshire

Well, I'm pleased to say we've been seeing a lot of positive feedback from the Team Spirit programme. I rhought it presented the morris in a pretty good light, without the far too common "humourous news item" approach.
We very much enjoyed doing it; we always have a great time on our Plough Tour, and it was enhanced this year by the folks from Radio 4 so obviously having a good time with us on the day, and at our practice on the previous night.(After practice they came to the pub for a couple of drinks and finished the evening by joining in a rousing rendition of Rolling Home before heading off to their hotel!)
I am slightly disappointed that the comment was made that a female or mixed side would have been more appropriate because the presenter was a woman. It never occurred to us that it could be any sort of issue. For me, The Morris is the thing to talk about and to plug, not Men's, Women's or Mixed morris (though I've played and/or danced in all of those over the years.)
All in all I'm very happy that Jockey were part of a programme about morris that seems to have been well received and appreciated.

Cheers,
Gary

I thought that, by taking The Morris seriously but at the same time showing how much people were enjoying it, the programme gave a huge plug to ALL morris.

Full marks to Jockey Morris for grasping the opportunity to show The Morris in such a positive light. Claudia Hammond (the presenter) obviously had a great time and was made to feel very welcome. Whilst I don't think she will go in for the 'very expensive surgery' Steve(?) referred to ..... can't think what he meant by that.... it was made clear that there were plenty of morris sides she could join.

Congratulations again to all concerned.

Sue

I enjoyed the programme and endorse what Sue the Borderer has said. I noticed that Anka got a brief mention too!

Michelle, the producer, contacted us from our web site. I can not emphasise how important it is, for any morris side, that their web site is managed regularly, is up to date, is easy to follow, is informative and not over complicated.
