First of all, find a good friend who can play conga or bongos. The early Kingston Trio albums had a number of calypso-flavored songs on them. Belafonte did a couple of albums of them. What I recall is the unusual double-syncopation, which takes a little practice. A little "ganja weed" probably enabled some earlier performers.
