I have to agree with Becca above that the "Head on!" commercials are the most obnoxious.

But now I know their product name...

What gets me is the Burger King commercials where the dad and his kids are playing with the toys and the dad always does something that looks funny ,but in reality it just makes him look dumb. It's just so pathetic.

The cable TV and the telephone-cable-internet commercials the ones that irritate me the most. They are an insult to the viewer's intelligence.

There's an ad for a septic tank cleaner that "unlike other cleaners, you can pour it down any drain, any time, day or night".
I don't get it. Are there septic tank cleaners that won't work on a 24hour basis? If I use one at the wrong time, what happens? Will it be rejected and splash me in my face? Will it explode? And how does it know that it's not the proper time to be used?

There was an article in the New Scientist last week about pundits but it applies to Adverts just as much.

We believe people who state with conviction and don't haver. "Probably" and 60% is not yer average fare in ads. They lie all the time and need to be challenged.

One ad for Lynx (man) perfume - that'a all it is whatever you call it - claimed that women don't like men who sweat. Now all the reports of scientific research I ever came across say just the opposite - traces of "man sweat" make park benches and T-shits etc preferred by most women. Now it the ad had said "women say they don't like man sweat" it might have been true, but it didn't.

FWIW the same is true for woman sweat on men according to similar research. It is all about staleness and amount.

Quizno's finally got rid of the moron who, with a mouth stuffed with greasy crap, says "Prime Rib, da kink of meats". Now they have the voice of Hal from 2001 Space Odyssey controlling a numbnuts sandwich maker. "Give it to me, now". I keep hoping he will entice the sandwich maker into the oven and...

YEAH, I AGREE. BILLY MAYS IS ANNOYING. HE'S WAY TOO EXCITED ABOUT ALL HIS PRODUCTS. Can you imagine having him for a father? HEY KIDS, IT'S TIME TO GET UP. IT'S A GREAT DAY OUTSIDE. AND YOU'LL PROBABLY LEARN ALL KINDS OF GREAT THINGS IN SCHOOL TODAY! BUT FIRST, HOW ABOUT BREAKFAST? WE'RE HAVING EGGS! AND, IF YOU GET UP NOW, I'LL INCLUDE ABSOLUTELY FREE, ANOTHER EGG. SOUND GOOD? HOW ABOUT IF I THROW IN, ABSOLUTELY FREE, THREE SLICES OF BACON? AND, IF YOU EAT IT WITHIN THE NEXT HALF HOUR, I'LL MAKE YOU LUNCH!!!!AND NOT JUST ANY LUNCH, BUT A LUNCH LIKE NO OTHER LUNCH EVER MADE!!!!!
And then one morning, I'd have to kill him. Or myself.

Hey, theman, I don't think you need to apologize. Billy Mays himself poked fun at his style of product-pitching. I'm sure he would have laughed if he had read the send-up that you and RangerSteve wrote, and he might even have acted it out on video. There are several clips on YouTube of him having fun with his image -- ordering food at a McDonald's drive-through; wreaking havoc in an office by misusing the products he pitched; parodying Shakespeare on Jay Leno's show, etc. He was a nice guy who didn't take himself too seriously... which may have been his downfall: he laughed off the blow to his head, joking about how hard it was, instead of seeking medical attention.

RIP, Billy Mays -- you were loud, you were proud, and your smile was the biggest special bonus you offered. We'll miss you!

But folks...you are missing the most gawd-awful, tedious, insulting to the intelligence, dishonest, misleading, annoying commercials running today (in the US).

"Freecreditreport.com" Stupid kid playing bad music too fast & too loud to sell you something already available for free!

("But", you say..."it says FREEcreditreport...") It also says in the fine print...'applies with enrollment in Triple Advantage'.

Mute. Music. News. Refrigerator. Books. Magazines. Prayer. Sex. Anything is better than ads. Some beer ads are amusing the first time, but rarely the second time. The commercial breaks during hockey games are dumb on several levels, and they disturb the flow of play...not to mention those stupid board ads.

No way I'm representative of the target audience. What's advertised aren't things I want or need.

Peace, Mooh.

Advertising isn't about supplying what WE need, we'll go out and buy that anyway.

Advertising is all about shifting the mountain of crap products nobody WANTS.

Those autoharp and baritone ukulele commercials are the worst!

Peace, Mooh.

Some commercials are cleverer than others, and then there's the whole 'meta' commercial thing, being the manner and method of the commercial being displayed.

I think GEICO is rather clever, they have at least three (no, make that four, no it's really five) major themes and they 'tend' not to overplay any one of them.

1) The GEICO gecko connection. The best of these were before the gecko had a voice, it was simply an appearance of the lizard, the most memorable being a shot of a dog looking out a car window, this was a really nice dog and clearly its attention was riveted as we found out by a lizard sitting on a convertible car seat next to it.

2) The testimonial of a normal person made obviously and with great fanfare by a genuine semi-celebrity (one time it was Joan Rivers).

3) A semi-dramatic event where one of the characters says out of the blue "I just saved a lot on my car insurance"

4) The "fine young cavemen" commercials.

5) The money-fold with big eyes that follows someone around who could be saving a lot of money on their car insurance.

In fact, GEICO can't be that cheap because they're spending so bloody much on pretty good commercials.

VOLKSWAGEN has generally good clever, not overdone commercials.

I even like the "I'm a PC" commercials in response to the really well-done "I'm a MAC -and I'm a PC" commercials where the truly funny guy is an increasingly well known humorist playing of course the PC.

The one's I can't stand. Anything with a talking baby or someone who shouts. Anything which tells you to talk to your doctor then follows this by an auctioneer's gabble of warning symptoms.

I think most any of them are stupid. I no longer have a TV, but commercials I have seen over the years make no sense to me at all. Of course, they didn't make any sens 50 years ago either, imo.

The last witty one I remember was a Volkswagen commercial:

Buy one, it makes your house look bigger.

That was when the Beetle was a few years in existence.

My favorite VW commercial:
Ever wonder how the snow plow driver gets to work?

With a VW plowing its way through the snow.

My latest "Most Hated Commercial" is that stupid bitch with her spoiled brat kids who refuse to use old "minutes" on their cell ohones. Take the damn cell phones away and let them pay for their own phones and their own minutes.

I just remembered one that makes me reach for the remote every time. It's one of those 'uplifting' ones where the man is waiting for his lady love outdoors on the deck and when she comes - em - they cuddle and he has this look on his face that is meant to be loving and tender, I suppose, but it appears more smarmy and lascivious than anything else.

Scraping around beneath the barrel brings up what is arguably the worst irritant since the evolution of poison ivy.

The sponsor ads for British Cop Soap "The Bill", starring an overacting halfwit who should never have left his day job.

He makes a complete hash of trying to be a comic US SWAT team member, combating, dirt and grime with a range of cleaning products.

A village somewhere is advertising for a new, better qualified, village idiot. They can't possibly be wanting this one back.

If I ever find out which advertising agency came up with that crap, I'll recommend them for the Guinness Book of World records.....and early euthanasia!

May have been mentioned before, but too much up above.

The insurance commercial about the guy who has a 20-year-old car, and his insurance is also 20 years old.
Anyone with any sense long ago cut back to accident and liability coverage, which works out about the same with all insurers, and dropped coverage on the car itself.
The commercial also implies that the guy should get a new car, but if a vehicle is properly maintained and in good condition, the guy is well-ahead of the game.

The Purex 3-in-1 dryer sheets commercial. It stars this red headed woman who talks about the wonderful things this dryer sheet does. At the end she says "now if it could just fold." She says this as she has the deer in the headlights look.

What a good idea Joe F. It would be the fastest slide off the list in the history of Mudcat, with NO posts whatever.

Pity it's not THAT easy to get rid of the ads themselves.

There is a very easy way to get rid of the ads themselves. Rip the guts out of your television and turn it into a plantholder or just drop it off a high place and watch it go "BOOM".

Do the same with your radio...or just tune it to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Canada's national radio show which is publicly financed and thus HAS no commercials.

Problem solved.
