"Treat others as you would have them treat you."
"Put up your sword, for those who live by the sword will perish by it."
"Don't kill unnecessarily."
"Give away all that own and follow me."
"Blessed are the poor."

WTF? Can this get any simpler?

I feel the same way about Falwell as I did about Richard Nixon. I'm sure he thought he was doing the right thing. Unfortunately I also think Falwell's idea of the "right thing" was to make money. He preached the word of Jesus but he did not seem to live it. He carried the Bible but he did not seem to really believe in the words inside, at least, not the New Testament. He used on the words that would promote HIS agenda, not God's.

So, as with Nixon, I am satisfied that he can no longer directly influence modern society. If that makes me a hypocrite, then so be it. I just want to know he is planted and gone.

As for "HIS agenda, not God's" I believe anyone who promotes and pushes for war and killing is NOT following that most simple of commandments, "Thou shalt not kill." How simple can it be? Four words, no subclauses.

+++BG+++, Kent.

I believe, fundamentally, he did more harm than good in the world, from what I have seen. But I have only seen a small slice of Falwell, which is about all I cared to see.

Hitchens was remarkable.

Let's see, we are glad he's dead because he was full of hate, and we know he was full of hate, because he condemned certain behaviors as being wrong, and we condemn that sort of thing because, you know, it's wrong. And we know for a fact that he was wrong about heaven and hell and God because no one can know those things. And of course he was judgmental and so he deserves to go to hell. Oh yeah, and he was a hypocrite.

It's funny. I have not been widely influential, but I have met thousands of peopel in my life and as far as I know I don't have one really wicked enemy.

I guess I'm not trying hard enough!! :D

Well, since I don't believe in hell and tend to believe in the sanctity and educability of Spirit, I picture him as penitent and wondering how he got it so wrong...

And if that sounds too utterly sanctimonious, may I add that I hope he's suffering. :)

Personally, I think Falwell is in Heaven doing the polka with William Rehnquist.

Good ol Jerry knew how to make a buck.
Gerry gave a TV sermon which included the remark that Bill Clinton was a murderer and provided evidence in the form of a list of 234 people that Clinton had killed.

When asked in provate if he believed if Clinton was actually murderer Falwell said "heavens no, I was just selling something for someone."

It may have been slander for cash but ya gotta admit that Jerry was honest about it...in private.

frogprince--What Mark Antony was saying was that when someone has done a surpassing evil, that is what is remembered, not the good. And that he would let that stand. But then he goes on to say that if Caesar had done wrong, he ultimately paid for it, and that they should mourn him as the friend and champion that they remembered.

Antony's speech is here--more than worth reading--Julius Caesar, Act 3, Scene 2

I seem to remember a joke about a man who dies and goes to heaven. He is amazed to be allowed through the gates because he never was a believer and was a bit of a sinner. "Well," says Saint Peter, "there never was a hell. Everyone is welcome here." About that time the man looks down off a cloud cliff into a sea of fire with souls roasting and demons tormenting them. "What's that?" Saint Peter looks down and sadly shakes his head. "Has nothing to do with us. The Baptists just wouldn't believe the facts..."

"The evil that men do lives after them;
The good is oft interred with their bones:" Let it be so for Fallwell-"-
M.Ted
I've heard that quotation a few times, but I've never happened to stop and really consider the implications. It strikes me as a profoundly, unduelly, pessimistic opinion, but at least it doesn't say the good is always interred with their bones.

I'm not sure why you said "Let it be so for Falwell". If by that you mean, let him not be remembered in death as something better than he was, I would agree. But I suspect that the evil of his influence will live after him to in ways that I wouldn't "wish" for by saying "let it be so".

You earn your reputation. That Falwell's death is so roundly snickered at is simply him receiving his due. His actions dictated and I'll be damned if he gets any sympathy from me. Besides, the sonofabitch got what he wanted--he politicized religion or religionized conservative politics--however you want to see it. He changed America's socio-political landscape. Not for the better but he changed it.

I think the only legitimate transformation Falwell ever had was when he learned that money from a black man's pocket was worth every bit the same as the money from a white man's pocket and thereafter desegregated the Thomas Road Baptist Church. Anyone who gives him money is as morally and intellectual bankrupt as Falwell was himself. Just not as rich.
