It is with great sadness that I heard this morning that Pied Piper aka John Snelson died yesterday. Unfortunately I haven't seen John for some time due to the distant of our towns and was unaware he was ill.
John was a fantastic musician who could play almost any instrument he picked up, superb on Whistle, fabulous on pipes, especially Scottish bagpipes he also excelled on guitar.
One of my fondest memories of John will always be the night he set up his pipes at a party at my house without anyone seeing him. The first thing anyone knew of it was when he starting playing at full volume in the hall and marched into the dining room creating a rare old noise, deafening the assembled company, drowning out both the piano player and me on guitar, a brilliant night.

Sleep well John

We are still waiting for full details Raggy but it is indeed very sad. We actualy heard on Saturday so he did pass away before yesterday. Hope to post full details after being updated by Swinton club members tonight but in the interim I agree with all the sentiments about John - Fantastic musician and good friend. A loss to us all.

He had recovered from an operation to remove oesophegal cancer last year and as at October he was looking very well. As I said - Someone will post the details after tonight.

Dave.

So sorry to hear this news I have many happy memories of John too, providing the morning alarm clock by playing on the ramparts of Saddell Castle and piping us across Islay in the post bus!

We have far too many fine ones gone...............

Not much more detail I'm afraid - Just that he fell ill a couple of weeks back and died shortly after. Thankfuly it doesn't seem to be the long process usualy associated with the big C so we don't know if his previous cancer had anything to do with it. He had been out for a pint only a couple of days before he died as well so it sounds very sudden indeed.

Arrangements have been made for the funeral but the only info I have is South Manchester (Southern Cemetary I would guess) 11am this Thursday. I'm up in Newcastle and can't be there but he will be in my thoughts.

I always did love his no-nonsense approach to the supernatural and scientific fringe theories:

How do you know when LH is trying to distract you from the evidence?

Answer

His Keyboard rattles.
(PP)

I'm sure he did not expect to live on after death in any form except in our and his real world friends' memories. But that is a lot.

Sadly I will not be able to get over to Manchester, however I would be grateful if someone could pass on my commiserations to his family. I will be thinking of him.

I hadn't seen John around for some time, he was one of those constants in life - always there - somewhere. I had no idea he'd even been ill. I'm very sorry to hear this news.

Life's a rum do, and there's nawt s' queer as folk.
- Pied Piper - (Immutable Truths thread)

Also:

"I don't really feel nationalistic at all, but actually feel like a Islander from our archipeligo, with all it's rich history reaching back to the last ice age."
That about sums up my attitude to belonging to these green islands in the grey North Sea.
Sadly a lot of people here define themselves by what they are not i.e. Sheep-shagging Welsh, tight-fisted haggis eating Scots and lots of much more offensive racial stereotypes applied to the "other".
As an example of my belonging here I regularly eat "wild" food; this year the Cherries were particularly plentiful and tasty and the blackberries (which my family collected in my childhood) were the best for years.
I belong because I'm part of the ecosystem which previous inhabitants created and gives us all Life.

TTFN
PP

I like the way he put that.

If you get the chance, Helen, let us know how it went. I know John used to do a lot of funerals at one time - Flowers of the Forest and The Dark Isle being probably his mst requested tunes. I do hope someone played for his memory.

Dave, I went to the funeral. The place was packed with appreciative fans of John's. The chapel was heaving. Yes, a piper, a person I've seen somewhere before, did play the Flowers of the Forest as the coffin was carried in. Adrian gave a little talk about the last visit he paid to John in hospital. He said he was drifting in and out of consciousness but was aware of what was going on around him. That was two days before the end. There were three other speakers I didn't know. Classical musicians played towards the end of the service. It was a fitting tribute to a great person and musician, Unfortunately my son - JohnJ - couldn't make it due to exams but there were many from the folk fraternity present. I hope this gives you some idea about the turnout. We shall miss him - RIP.

HelenJ.

Oh, lovely. Thanks ever so much Helen. I would have liked to have been there but it is my first week at a new job 150 miles away:-( He will be sorely missed on so many fronts but I think we should give thanks that we knew him and that he led such a full and interesting life. Just a pity there was not more of it. RIP John.

Dave.
