There's a lot of talk about Art's new CD I am looking forward to getting a copy. In the meantime I am listening to Dan's latest CD " Irish Ballads and Songs of the Sea" which if you haven't heard it you are missing A LOT!

Great songs, well sung, excellent musicianship, a delight to own, and it features Lois Killen and Dan's brother Liam.

As someone else said I would never have heard about these guys if it hadn't been for the Mudcat. I'm looking forward to finding more talent amongst the august membership

Best Regards

Ian

I just got Dan's new CD from Sany (Folk Legacy) and it's just about perfect. As I've said, it's great to hear Lou Killen & Mick Malloney and the rest of Dan's fine backup singers. They get equal billing with Dan on the front of the CD---a very nice gesture from Mr. Milner. But this IS Dan's CD---and it's wonderful.

Congratulations are surely in order for Dan Milner (Liam's Brother). And the mysterious, Liam Milner, is on the CD too.

Already, I'm encountering the CD for the 3rd time today. (Definitely, a close encounter of the 3rd kind!) It's even better this time around!! "The Harp Without A Crown" to the tune o' "Bonny Blue Flag" is a fine song I've not heard before.

But I have a book here with what I've always felt MUST BE A MISPRINT in it. In your version of "Lord Bateman", is the line "This Turk, he had an only daughter...", or is it (as it's printed in my book), "This TURKEY had an only daughter..."?

Just was wondering...

Art

Dear Art,

Well may you question the wording in Lord Bateman. In truth, the villain was both a Turk and a Turkey.

Turkish was his nationality or, at least ethnicity, but he was a Turkey as well for messing with our hero.

Professor Child, as I recall, thought the ballad to be based on the life of the father of Thomas a Becket. I would dig out more detail but, since I found out what my humble Dover reprints of the Child ballad collection are worth, I've been keeping them in the vault.

All the best,
Dan

I received my copy last night. It is wonderful.

Now what I want to know, Dan, is do you really sing those 6 minute solo songs in one setting? I find when I go byond two-three verses I lose track of which one is next and miss something each time. Not to mention by the end I'd be horridly out of tune.

I'm still amazed that you would attempt this. Congradulations on that.

Hi Frank

I'd like to take the credit for bringing Dan's CD to everyone's attention but in truth I would not have known anything about it had not Joe brought it to my attention and posted a full listing of all the songs on his earlier thread pointed to above.

I am now on the scout for other such talent. If I find a new CD as good as those from Art and Dan you'll here me shout from where your sitting.

Best regards

Thanks to everyone above for their kind comments.

This may not be of much use the Mudcatters out Alice Springs way or anyone else very far from NYC but I thought I would just let you know that there will be a "CD Release Party" in Manhattan on Friday, 5FEB. Pardon me if I'm being crudely commercial.

I don't exactly know what a "CD Release Party" is or should be. If any of you know, please advise. We did one of these at a place where I sing regularly back in early December and Murphy's Stout came down with baloons and hats and the like but I don't think we can count on them this time.

Brian Conway, a fine New York Irish fiddler and All-Ireland Champion who can trace his lineage through Andy McGann to the great Michael Coleman, will be joining me along with Bob Conroy, a terrific banjo/guitar player and singer who does a lot of Irish-American and sea songs.

I have invited everyone else who took part in the recording. If they all show up, this will take on the dimensions of a folk festival; I make no promises, however.

Friday, February 5th @ 9PM
THE BLARNEY STAR,BR> 43 Murray Street (at Church Street),
New York City.

Anyway, if you're in town on 5FEB, come look us up.

All the best,
Dan

Maybe this thread is a more appropriate place for this message. The album is available at Folk-Legacy Records (click here).
I thought I'd post a list of the songs on Dan's Irish Ballads and Songs of the Sea, with links to those lyrics that I could find in the database or forum. Note that William Main Doerflinger himself helped Dan prepare the CD notes. Lou Killen sang on many of the cuts, and even the elusive Liam helped out. Gee, Dan brought in all the big guns to help on this production.

Skarpi min,

As long as there are fish in the waters of Iceland, I hope to be there at least once a year. I had unexpected and, probably, undeserved success in September. We went fishing for sea trout and I got a salmon instead. There was only one drawback. We arrived at the mountain hut about 1600, lit the kerosene heater and went fishing while the cabin heated up. By the time we returned a couple of hours later, the temperature inside had dropped 3 degrees!

I was at Keflavik 2 weeks ago and spoke with a few friends about Bob Conroy and myself doing a night in Reykjavik when we fly over for our UK tour next November. I'll let you know if anything comes of that.

In the meantime, the easiest way for you to get a copy is to take a look at:
https://www.lexiconn.com/folklegacy/order.htm

Thanks for your interest. Keep the music flowing down at The Dubliner.

Bless!
Dan

Hi!

Hank asked above whether the 6 minute unaccompanied song was done in one take, saying it would be difficult to memorize the words. The answer is "yes." Simple answer, more interesting question.

Once you've learned it, it's relatively easy to sing a long ballad from memory. It is a story song, after all, and has a definite sequence of events to be followed. I can pretty much sing a "big" ballads from memory even if I haven't done so within a year provided I am not tired or distracted. Much more difficult would be to sing a long lyric song with no plot line to keep the memory straight.

On the technical side, it's much easier to "punch in" a word, a line or a verse of an accompanied song when there's been a flub because there's always the instrumental track to keep the attention of the listener. With solo unaccompanied singing, every breath is audible because that voice is the only thing happening.

As far as keeping on pitch is concerned, any of the Irish Mudcatters can tell you that's something that comes with practice and self-confidence... not to forget having the right key to start.

Thank you, Earl and everyone else, for your kind encouragement.

All the best,
Dan

I got this from Folk Legacy a little over a week ago, as well as Dan's Book, "A Bonnie Bunch of Roses" a few days ago through the Mudcat link with Amazon.Com. I must tell you that both of these are "must owns" for serious 'Catters.

The CD is superb. It has excellent musical selections, Dan's voice is superb, the arrangements are tight, and the instrumentation and harmony are right there, meaning that they have just the right amount of intrumentation. I agree with Art with regard to "The Harp without the Crown". It is destined to become one of my favorites, along with his arrangement of "Row, Bullies, Row". If your only exposure to "Lily of the West" is the Chieftains Long Black Veil arrangement, you should hear Dan's. All in all a marvelous effort by one of our most respected 'Catters. I would rate this CD right up there with Art Theime's, and point out to all of you just how blessed we are to have these gents here with us.

Dan's book, "A Bonnie Bunch of Roses" is a great collection. I have a marvelous of books, but I had never purchased this because I have so much of this music, I didn't feel the need to add another book to the skads I already have. As I became acquainted with Dan and we became 'online friends', I felt I should give the book a look. Imagine my (very pleasurable) surprise when I went through it. It is loaded with a lot of music that I have not heard, exellent notes on the songs, and the selection is exactly the type of thing I enjoy playing in my gigs. Songs tha crowd hasn't heard, but which they will want to hear again. It is a great book, well written and very useful. I would commend it to all.

Congratulations, my friend, for two excellent efforts. Thanks for giving them to us.

All the best,

Mick

Wanted to revive this thread, because this is such an excellent cd. If you are a fan of traditional music that is spare and unadorned but crystal-clear and straight from the soul, then Dan's cd is a necessity for your collection. My favorites are "The Nightingale" and "Lovely Ann", but there is not a weak performance on the album. Thanks, Liam's Brother!

Hi!

I tinkered a bit with the website at 11:30 last night, putting in a "Song of the Month" feature and a link to The DT Folk Song Database. I went to bed.

Woke up this morning to tinker once more and found all the pictures and other graphics wiped. Well, I started looking for a culprit or culprits (conspiracy theory). About 4PM, I happened to check a few other websites hosted by the same company... garage bands... amateur geneologists... and found none of those sites had pictures anymore either. Therefore, I've concluded it's the Martians who are responsible... did it as a retaliation for we Earthlings crashing that primitive probe thing into their lovely red planet a few days ago.

I will let you know when our lined faces and greying hair are again visible on the silver screen. In the meantime, the Song of the Month is a nice version of "Paddy Works on the Railway."

All the best,
Dan Milner

Well, it is always a surprise to open up Mudcat and see my name on a thread. That's another way of saying that it doesn't happen often enough that I'm blaise about it.

The thread, including the kind comments contained therein, started some time ago. Last year I got the idea that a seaquel to Irish Ballads and Songs of the Sea might not be a bad idea and I started recording again. The album's not finished yet but there is a pinhole of light in front of me.

Like Irish Ballads and Songs of the Sea, this new album will have an all-star crew:
Tim Collins, anglo concertina
Bob Conroy, 5-string banjo
Brian Conway, fiddle
Gabriel Donahue, bouzouki, guitar, piano, mandolin
John Doyle, voice, guitar, bouzouki
Joanie Madden, flute, whistle
Susan McKeown, voice
Mick Moloney, voice, tenor banjo, mandolin
Robbie O'Connell, voice
The Johnson Girls, voices.
More on this later.

Thanks to everyone above for the encouragement.

All the best,
Dan

That's my boy!!! I am anxious for this one, Dan. It has been far too long.

For those that don't know, Dan is one of the most giving artists around. He is generous to a fault. On my band's first CD there is a song that Dan uncovered and reconstructed in his digging around in old archives. This wonderful friend, when he heard we were planning a CD, asked me what the direction was on it. I told him, and he sent this wonderful song called The Sligo Musketeers to us. It had never been recorded, as he had discovered it, I believe, in an old broadside. He actually sent it to me, and to Frank Harte. But I am proud to say that we beat Frank to the punch (***chuckle***) and got it recorded first. That's the kind of guy that Dan is. When you look at the guest artist list on the new CD, you understand what kind of circles he moves in. He could have given that song to anyone, or recorded it himself. But he was interested in helping out a band. And he passed it on. We have become dear friends over the years, and a person couldn't have a better one. This CD will be a must have. It always is.

If you want to listen to the song Dan gave us, just go to our myspace page, www.myspace.com/conklinceiliband and if it doesn't come up, just click the link on Sligo Musketeers. It is a beaut.

All the best,

Mick
