Thread Name: Songs about Jimmie Rodgers
Subject: Lyr Add: THE LIFE OF JIMMIE RODGERS (Gene Autry)
[You can hear this recording at YouTube.]

Words and music by Bob Miller.
As recorded by Gene Autry, 1933. (Conqueror 8168)

Jimmie Rodgers was borned in Dixie, Ďbout thirty-five years ago,
From poor but honest parents; they were proud of him, we know.
Ever since heíd been a youngster, he played his olí guitar,
And all the neighbors predicted heíd win fame wide and far.

When Jimmie grew up to manhood, he went to Tennessee.
He worked on the Southern Railroad; a reckless brakeman was he;
But his health began to fail him, and he didnít last there long,
But he always wore a big smile and yodeled his brakemanís song: YODEL

Then one day he made some records, and soon won lots of fame,
Brought happiness to millions; folks idolized his name;
And then in ev'ry nation, the voice of Jimmie was heard.
He sang to cheer the millions, sang sweeter than a bird.

Life is filled with sorrow; each day demands a toll.
We canít predict tomorrow for any living soul.
So it was with Jimmie Rodgers, when angels called one day.
They needed a songbird in heaven, so they took Jimmie away.

Thereís an old guitar thatís silent, that Jimmie used to play,
But the magic touch of music is missing there today.
Jimmieís golden voice is up there, where angels sing sweet refrains,
Where God in his merciful heaven in glory ever reigns.
